Brought in my own coffee..the office is out for now.

So, it looks like that cleaver was made somewhere between 1870-1890 and was probably used in the Chicago Cattle yards (or somewhere around there). It's obviously been used a lot and the edge has been cleaned / maintained, so I'll continue to use it. Being a huge fan of Fiddleback, it was neat to see a tapered tang on this knife, too. I'm sure it has to do with the hammering process, but it's a first for my collection.

Sure, why not? It's always a good day when some new steel comes home.

Just a recap of someone purchasing a sheath, orders it, pays for it, payment goes thru.... Then I start to get invalid email notifications and when I go drop package off at post office, mail person says that's an invalid address... Recommended I do a signature required track and confirm. So I just got notified that it has arrived and no one was there to sign for it... Mail person left a note. Persons address is real I guess.. I wrote him a little note inside package about his email.

Weird part is that PayPal has his address and email confirmed...

Im guessing that it isnt a person on the forum? Not sure what more you can do unless he gets a hold of you.

My mom just remodeled her kitchen so we stopped by and I cooked dinner for my family. I love cooking in nice kitchens she has great stuff! Her pots and pans cost more than my fridge.

Seared pork loin topped with homemade pesto, served with asparagus grilled with garlic and oven roasted potatoes. It was so good I ate like 3 servings haha.

That looks awesome! I want to take some kind of cooking class or training. I am pretty good at what I already know, but I have a hard time coming up with new dishes or knowing what spice to use.

after years and years of cooking classes, all that they taught me is how to sub in stuff and don't be afraid to experiment. You never know what will work. Best thing you can do is go to a grocery store and find the stuff you have NO clue about. Buy it, do a bit of research when you get home, then play with it and invent something.

Basics I've learned, bacon goes with ANYTHING! You can never have too much garlic. Onions are amazing cooked in a pan till translucent with butter. Apple goes really well with pork.

So, I ran up to grand prairie knives. Got a nice little haul. The 24 is about $5 higher there than Tomars, but NO WAITING!

I don't think I did this right, I couldn't remember how it went though. I'll redo it tonight after taking my dad to supper.

So, reason for retail therapy. Today is the 27th anniversary of my dad's accident. He was hit by a drunk driver. He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital but the paramedics were able to revive him both times it happened. When he got to the hospital he died one more time but they were able to get him back then too. Over the night the doctors gave him a morphine pca pump with no lock out time. Basically whenever he wanted to hit the button he got the meds. This is VERY uncommon. There is usually a 12-15 minute lock out so the patient doesn't overdose on it. He had severe internal hemorrhaging and the doctors wouldn't come in to do the surgery till monday (this happened on a friday at 8pm). By the time the doctors did operate his entire stomach was full of gangrene and they had to remove 1/3 of his lower intestine and 1/2 his smaller intestine.

He eventually got out of the hospital, but because of the brain trauma along with the physical injuries he was never the man he was. 3 years ago he retired because he wasn't mentally able to keep working. He has severe depression and quite often I'll get a call in the middle of the night from him crying and wishing he was dead. He is now on disability which has made it a little better but still doesn't make much difference in the long run.

The reason this affected me so badly, besides the obvious, I was in the car behind him when this all happened. I was in the ambulance with him on the way to the hospital. This is my very first memory in life.

Sorry for the rant... Had to get it off my chest.

That is about what I do, if I eat out and taste something new I usually try to get some and recreate it.. I just usually fall short. I would like to know spices better and be able to know what to grab after tasting some concoction. My main problem is I am pretty adventurous culinary wise but my wife isn't so If I do experiment and it doesn't turn out, I am stuck with it all to myself.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, that is a rough situation to live through..

Spices do take some experience with to know when they are needed and how much, best thing you can do is keep practicing. It's like tuning a guitar by ear, eventually you get a feel for it. I'm still a novice myself. I learned a lot of what I know about cooking by looking up recipes on foodnetwork.com based on ingredients I had and then making them. And remember, there is no substitute for FRESH cracked black pepper! Best of luck!

Kinda sad... Wohlwend has appeared in GBU, and it ain't for his timeliness or great communications either. Can't say I'm surprised; he's had my knife order and $ for almost a year and there are a bunch of other customers that haven't heard hide nor hair of the guy. Wonder if he'll get flushed from BFC this time... this is at least his second major flakeout since I've been on this site.

I got tired of waiting for my custom maxi-Hiker from him and got a micro-Bushcrafter of his off the Exchange and OMG I love it and now I really want my custom maxi-Hiker heh.

Kinda thinking of sending my specs to another maker. Bill Akers would be at the top of my list; anyone have any other makers they like?

Well, I had better go chime in then. My knife never showed.

Support your LGS???

Went down today to p/u a BK7. Had a couple KaBars and a Camillus in stock, each marked $120.
Trying to prep the guy, I mentioned that I'd seen 'em for $73 online. (Actually, it's less than that right now!)
I should add that he's got a reputation as a gruff old codger; I tend to be pretty open-minded and easy-going.
And probably 30 years his junior.
Anyhow, when negotiating, if there's no price listed you ask how much, right? And if there is, and you want to work on it, you present your offer?
It's not like I need it this weekend or anything.
I ask if he'd accept $90 for it. I'm not in retail anymore, bur I have a decent idea about cost, overhead, storage, personal assistance, etc. Anyway, any more than that and I really should just order it. Still, if he came back with $95 or $100 I'd a done it, just because I was there and to support a local businessman.
He says "you're going to come in here and tell me how much I'm got to take for it? I'd sell 'em for $90 all day, but not if you're going to tell me how to run my business."
I explained that I was merely asking if he'd accept it. He didn't - and then refused to sell me some commodity-type items I'd already picked out.
I guess I see where he gets his rep, and since my only known LKS that carried KaBar went out after SHOT, looks like I'll be talking to Tomar soon.
I hate to see local business close down, especially if due to internet pressures or big-box stores. But I'm nobody's patsy, and don't cow to extortion.
He's done it longer than I've been around (46 yrs to my 43) but I just don't know how he intends to remain in business if he buries his head in the sand and pretends the rest of the world doesn't exist.
End rant

PS:
Cold - I usually do my best cooking when I run out of what the recipe calls for and try to find something to substitute (not 1-for-1, but to change or enhance the flavor.) It's kinda like science experiments. But you're right, when they don't work out, you end up with a BIG meal all to yourself...

BRL - Sorry to hear about that. I know it happens now and again, but it always blows when it happens to you. I've been waiting 14mo's for a not-even-custom flashlight.

C-Bear - diggin' the 24. Sorry to hear about your dad - thanks for sharing.

710 - Don't let 'em get to you. Contrary to popular belief, you SHOULD be proud to be a CA native. I'll probably be contacting you for a sheath when the time comes.

I bought a knife from him after his first major flake but before the second -- the current one is his third or 4th -- anyway, the knife showed up with some pretty impressive scratches down one side -- needless to say, I was not impressed. I later found out he had a rep for doing that kind of thing -- showing pictures from any angle that didn't show a flaw, not mentioning flaws, and when contacted about them, it was always something that happened after it left his shop.
between that and the really long breaks with no communication, I decided to take my $$ elsewhere.
as to makers for your specced out blade:
Bill Akers does really nice work, so does KFU and Tackett13 -- they're all 2 associated, and listed in order of pricing. (hint, Bill is not the low price option) ;)
John Kiedaisch -- JK works in O1, does a killer HT with it, and is REAL easy to work with.
Battle Creek Knives -- i've only played with one of Rob's knives so far, and it was a freebie he made from a bandsaw blade -- even so, the grinds were clean and the HT solid.
There there's this TM Hunt guy, but he's not taking orders for the next few months.

hope that all helps.

(and seriously -- JK has a 2-3 month wait, but it's worth it, Tackett13 doesn't have much of a wait time and is a good guy as well. he's been making knives less than a year but is putting out some seriously nice stuff)
