This is the second blade that I made from the file Brad (B.V.) gave me.

On the first one John W. got me started on the grind; this one I did myself altho Brad did the HT at the same time as the first one.

This one has African Padauk and Bloodwood with a brass spacer for the handle.

They aren't beautiful knives like the rest of you guys make but at my age, I never thought I'd ever make a knife. And it only took about 20 years to get around to it.

Dave,

Those are beautiful knives! I'm an old guy just starting too. Here's to us old guys with enough gumption to take on something new
(and why the hell did we wait?)

hidden. There are 2 of em altho they are REALLY short so I don't know how much good they will do. I think I miscalulated the length. I didn't want them showing thru the wood when I sanded it.

Pretty sweet Dave. I like'em, put some pins on the next ones.

I will; the hidden pins were way too much trouble.

I did enjoy doing these and I'll certainly make more as time allows, but I must say making 1911 grips is much easier.

good for you Dave , I was checking , I assumed you have been listening  :)

You should be proud of that Dave, that looks like a fine knife.

Dave,
I like em much. How do get that knife to stand like that?

Greg

Greg,

See the magic black dot under the knife? Under the magic black dot is a rare earth magnet. The knife won't stand up at just any angle. You have to tease it a bit. The stand is a gun stand that I make and sell. I sent one to someone at Colt's and they loved it because there are no supports to detract from the gun.

Thanks for asking. I was wondering if anyone would notice.

Good looking starter knife David. Add some pins on the next one and see what you think. Nice job there and thanks for posting it. God bless and have a nice day there.

I am pleased with the results especially considering that my tools/equipment is limited and I don't have a real shop (all my stuff is in the laundry room). I agonized about the handle material for days. I finally decided that I didn't have anything on hand that I wanted to use so I ordered some wood samples from Woodworkers Source.

I also wanted to do something unique so I chose some rather striking wood and separated the wood with a bit of brass. I hope ya'll like the effect.

The best part is that I am using the wood to make 1911 grips and the wood on the knife was leftover wood. I figured there would be enough left over for the knife because it is a small knife.

Another point about these multi-color handles is that I like to use every little piece of material I have. I can't stand throwing something out if I think I can use it. Since I am currently unemployed, everything that I pay for chips away at my funds so I use everything til it's used up.

I have some other blades that I need to put handles on so I think I'll order some more wood samples.

I really appreciate everyone's nice comments.

Terry, I will use pins on the next blades I have. Unfortunately, the blades I have I didn't make. I am working on 4 of my own blades tho.

Here's one of the blades I purchased that I put some of the purpleheart from Scott Ickes. I have one more blade like this and 4 file blades.

I think I like using two different types or colors of wood so the knife doesn't look so plain. What do ya'll think?

I personally like just one color, but I think two would look better if you had one color be the main knife, and the other one be closer to a bolster look.

I agree with Mikey here . If you use 2 pieces one should be a bolster or an insert between 2 pieces of the same material . Now , go farther , dove tail the pieces .

Mike,

Actually I almost used some black Micarta as a bolster type material along with the two pieces of wood. I just thought the wood was so purdy that I wanted to use as much of it as possible. I think next time I will use black Micarta as a bolster and one color of wood (as well as pins).
