Here's Close Up Pics of Daryl's Team Gemini.... does Tan & Back G10 darken?

I've got a bunch of micarta... and patiently waiting on G10 from the swamp. Non of my micarta have the multiple colors like Daryl's. Must be the Gemini cut. Plus my micarta is sooo much darker.

Sure that is canvas micarta? Looks a lot like black G10 there.

ETA: OK, nevermind. Looking closer, and it does appear to be canvas micarta. Definitely some of the blackest black canvas micarta I've seen from the Busse shop!!! :cool:

That is a pic of one of his stunt copies. His hero knife is black/tan G10 with a doublecut finish.

Here is a shot of it: http://www.wallpapersgroup.com/wallpapers/2012/10/The-Walking-Dead-Daryl-Dixon-movies1-2048x2048.jpg

Another with the brightness turned up clearly showing the black lines in the G10.

The one Norman typically carries in his sheath is a stunt. It is most likely rubber resin and the handle has been painted. I have seen quite a few close ups of the stunt knives, particularly from fan shots from when they were filming scenes from season 3. The handles all look like that. They aren't meant to be seen up close.

Ok votes so far:

Bowman1911 = Black Canvas Micarta
SpyderPhreak = Black Canvas Micarta
Shunsui = Black Canvas Micarta
JSMCustoms = ... agreeing it's Black Canvas Micarta?
mymindisamob = Black Canvas Micarta
RobStanley = Black Canvas Micarta

Also, please give me a list of scenes where Daryl is showing off his Gemini. I'll grab higher resolution screens. This is what I've got so far:

S2 Ep1 "What Lies Ahead" (chopping up a zombie)
S2 Ep4 "Cherokee Rose" (pics below)

Jaxx answered your question with a screen shot of the props used in the show. On the table of props are 4 seperate models, each which different handle color options that are used depending on lighting conditions:

from jaxx's post
What color...? I see B&T G-10, one or two black micarta & a tan micarta handled TG's (or TG handle) on the table.

There are at least 4 TG's used or available for use on the set as seen in these 2 pix. One is now just a handle...

It looks like the the 3rd pic down is the handle only version with the blade "photo shopped" in. Maybe for filming stabbings.;)

But Yes Black Canvas all the way.

Each scene that has one in it will dictate which will one be used... Lighting is important. Most likely, the knives have been altered to reduce reflections/shine, i.e. beadblasted or enhanced, i.e. marked up (to look dirty and/or used).
Usually...as in so far, closeups with 'Daryl' and the Team G seem to be the one(s) with black canvas handles...

Sorry, that was actually meant for the OP in case he hadn't had any dealings with the 2 materials. BTW, I'm just down the road from ya in Morganton!

Sweet. I've ran into a lot of people around the forums from this general area.

It's not photoshopped, but something fake held with the handle that's meant to bend very easily...so zombie actor doesn't really lose an eye... ;) :D
You can see that he's holding it between the handle and his fingers. If that fake blade is met with enough resistance on contact, he can let it go and still hold on to the handle.

...From there, it would be easier to CGI any of the fake "blade" out if they got a good take and some of it showed.

For all of those that doubt there is black canvas, keep in mind this is a TV show. They don't dirty it like most people do. Every black canvas I have get darker but pretty evenly. The show has to artificially dirty it.

I'm wondering if the one on the far right is tanker gray. Where did you get this picture?

TalkingDead-PropTable_TGs2.jpg

Talking Dead Season 3, Episode 00 (The summer special episode of TD).
I don't think it's Tanker Gray, but the angle of the knife that makes it look darker. If 'Daryl' suddenly had a TG colored TG, it would be inconsistant with previous shots, and the crew is trying very hard to keep things as consistent as possible, IMO.

That is a CG blade that is motion tracked and composited on to the live action footage of the bladeless knife. A very cool and safe way of creating realistic violence and gore.

The reason I don't think the below pic is of a real Team Gemini is due to the areas I have highlighted. There are gaps in the scales and the scales do not have the same shape of a real TG, particularly towards the butt of the handle.

It appears that they casted a TG and painted it. It is not easy to simulate layered G10 with paint. I know because I tried. I made myself a crude stunt copy with a 1x4 and my dremel.

I don't have any close ups of the painted one, in fact, I can only find one pic of it, but you can kind of see that the paint job isn't very good. I went a different route by using white and black. Had I done with tan and black, it would have been more the color of the pic of Daryl's above. Mine has gaps just like his does. Not on purpose.

As you can see below, Tan/Black G10 can definitely be mistaken for black micarta if the pic is blurry and lighting isn't good.

I'm sure I'm just repeating what has already been said but keep in mind the prop department has several TG's on hand (and according to Jerry some TGLB's as well) along with stunt knives. I'm sure several of the knives have different handles and finishes but the "hero" knife is most likely a DCBB finish with black/tan G10 handles.

Note, that blade is not correct. The shape is totally wrong, and no blood groove. Looks computer animated. I'm assuming they use that bladeless handle for shots where he is stabbing in to the hilt, and they just CG edit the blade in up until it's stabbed. In this shot he is about to sink it into a zombies head, so that would make sense.

That is correct.

I'll defer to Rob's expertise, but to me it does look "real" (as in a real object, not a knife blade) as it doesn't line up on or with the handle, and has a rather noticeable angle difference from the handle. That why I thought that it might be a real object designed to deflect or crumble up (even like heavy paper) on the 'impact' to the face of the actor in the zombie makeup. I must say though that either way, it looked real enough in motion! :)

Feezle how do you know so much about this stuff? You work in the movie biz, theater or just a hobby?
