HEST #225 came in from RYP, #162 you're up for a beating

I got a call, the HEST #225 arrived at my house.

This HEST is given graciously by RYP following a post I had made about my #162 that had paint chipping away. At the end of the thread RYP said he had a couple of HEST left and that he would send one to me, in the condition that I beat the bejesus out of the flawed one.

So know that I have a knife to destroy, I want the RAT Packers to tell me what they want to see (make it practical, I don't think battoning a cement block will be needed). I would like some fresh ideas on though ways to use it.

Remember its a type of review were we want to see what it can withstand and how it can handle it, we don't want to just break it.

So shoot your suggestions with as much possible details as possible, even drawings are welcomed. For information my playground will be the boreal forest of Canada and winter will be coming soon, so lots to try before doing in a cold weather test.

A big thanks to RYP and the RAT Cutlery team.

The list from submitted suggestions :

- Pry crates with the prybar and blade
- See how it holds up in cold winter and use tip and pry bar on ice
- (Throw it around) removed, not a intended knife use
- Slice webbing and cord
- Cut electrical wires (unplugged)
- Carve a spoon using the blade and the pry bar

Suggestions from RYP :
- hammer an escape hatch in the side of a helo (need a willing helicopter owner :))
- lash it to a heavy branch and cut down a tree (turn the blade into an axe ?)
- use it as a pulley to tow your car (how in the hell am I suppose to use a knife as a pulley for a car ?)
- make a pair of sandals out of truck tires (Thats the african way of life, anyone got a spar tire ?)
- make a hard spring booby trap and see what kind of penetration you get in a side of meat (Booby trap, thats ok, but I don't think hunting a moose like this will be wise, anyone have some good trap ideas for me ?)
-smash a car window (junker please) with the pommel or use the "bottle opener to shatter a stuck window (safety glasses and gloves please) You might be surprised to see what a H•E•S•T can do to a junked car. (need to find a junk car :) with the windows still on it)

If you have any crates available, try prying the boards apart, with the prybar and the blade.

Batoning through wire of different thicknesses.

Spreading peanut butter ... no, I already tried that, it works fine.

"Batoning through wires"

Explain what types of wires, electrical, they got to be a damn thick one for me to have to baton through

If it holds up till winter, try prying at some ice using the prybar/or the tip. I want to see if it holds up well in frigid temps without getting brittle.

Also, could try using it as a slicer to see how it holds up. I'll leave it up for discussion as to various objects that could be sliced. (Try to keep fingers out of it, we had to many casualties already ;) )

I sure hope it will last to winter, I personally am very interested to see how it works in really cold climate and how the tip prybar will stand the beating of ice.

When you say use it as a slicer, I don't get it, you want to test slicing things like tomato or what ?

throw it around. i have noticed that that will tear a knife up quickly. use trees i guarantee you'll find the one lone rock at the base that will play hell on any blade.

I will practice my knife throwing on trees than, not sure how good of a flyer it will be.

Just using the term baton generally. I usually use my hand to hammer down on the back of a blade going through something hard, like a piece of wood.

Just don't cut live electrical wires. :p

All I have to say is "why"????

Why does it always seem that to test a knife we have to throw it and do things that knives normally wouldn't do. It's your knife and you can do with it as you please but to me it's like buying a new car then ramming it into a tree just to see how well the bumper works.

Why ?

Because RYP made a trade, he sent me a brand new HEST to test the flawed one at its fullest, which doesn't mean break it. You are right throwing a knife isn't its intended use unless it is a throwing knife. I don't know why even throwing a knife around was asked, it sure doesn't seem a wise way to use a blade, but a great way to loose it.
That one is getting scratched off the list, thanks for the remark.

Dude its a DPx H•E•S•T!

Here is a better idea of what to do with it
- hammer an escape hatch in the side of a helo
- lash it to a heavy branch and cut down a tree
- use it as a pulley to tow your car
- make a pair of sandals out of truck tires
- make a hard spring booby trap and see what kind of penetration you get in a side of meat

The point is I didn't design the knife to be a closet queen.

Don't worry you wont break it but sometimes people wont believe what a knife can do until they try it. Putting it in a vice and bending it is not a good use of a limited edition knife but seeing what can be done with the lashing points, prybar, opener/pry and the extra heavy blade would be interesting.

BUT follow the basic rules of knife use, keep it sharp, keep it smart and doan cut yoahsef ;))

Well, I disagree. You're dealing with the principles of physics and 1095 steel heat treated to 57 Rc. I could BS you and say we have a super secret mystery steel or Kryptonite in our knives and that they're designed to take anything you do with them, including standing up to acetylene torches, but I'd be lying. As Nos showed in his videos, they will take a lot, but they WILL, in fact, break it if you apply too much stress. There is nothing any tougher about the HEST than any of the rest of our knives. The same procedures, steel and heat treat built the HEST as built the RC-3, 4 5 and 6. If you want an unbreakable knife then you will have to find a different manufacturer. Not sure who that will be but it won't be us ;)

As a side note, our knives will take somewhere between 30 and 40 degrees of lateral stress before breaking, as shown in the video on our site. BUT THEY WILL BREAK! If you start throwing it at trees, hammering it through steel or concrete, etc. then you are going to eventually tear it up. Not trying to say I know it all, but Shon and us have been in this business for a long time and have seen a WHOLE lot of BS about knife geometry, steel physics, heat treating, etc. The bottom line is you can't cheat or beat physics.

Make a spoon or bowl with it. Use the tip for chipping/digging away at the wood.

I've thought the pry hook might work very well for gouging out the concave part of the spoon.
