Wow! one locked thread and folks are still talkin. Guess I really opened a hot topic when I brought up throwin the green stuff:eek: :D

hey Mark
if the big guy sends you down some money put in a good word for me
will yeah :D

I can go out back of my house and pi$$ in the woods all I want and no body care or sees
NICE :) I hope you get what you want..:)

Mark, that place looks great, whats with the move thing. I never heard you say anything about a travelin Jones...

And who the heck am I going to get to do the Hampton shows with me ?

Someone else that makes a 6 & half foot spear, just to hear people ask ..what is that ????:p

I think it's just the older I get, the less I can stand the Summer heat around here. That and the friggin crime rate is getting a bit out of hand. I know it's the same morons that are killin each other, but the cross-fire is always a danger.
Plus I'm a displaced hillbilly anyway :)

Come on up Mark, We can get together for some wild forging and cussing! There are some good shows here in the northwest too.

Looks Super Mark ! Beautifull Country. The snow pictueres looks like where I was 4 wheelerin this weekend.

Hope you get everything you want. You shouldnt see much crime there. :-)

Shane

I hope to do as much knife related activities as possible Bruce. Cussin and forgin sounds great :)

Nice looking places. Almost makes me want to go too. Maybe I'll visit. Still got to get a fishin trip here before you go.

Larry

Mark, A couple things to consider are power and water and the cost to get both if they aren't of easy access. The piece of property I have 50 miles east of where I'm at now the power was was there but drilling a well even 25 years ago was $15.00 a foot. A good supply of water was at a minimum 500' but not always the case. One more thing is wind. A number of folks built and figured they were all set in there dream house but the wind drove them off. A good number didn't last a year. I wish you the best and I feel your excitement but don't throw caution to the wind.

Come on with us Larry, There's a hundred acres where were looking.

I know what you mean Ray. Luckily, I know one lot having a well at 60 ft doesnt mean the next will also. But that seems to be about average in this tract. I dont think wind would be too much of a problem where we want to build. There's a pretty nice patch of trees and a large shelf for a wind break that we would build behind and still have great Southern exposure.

Heck , if it's REAL windy , I'll put up a turbine for mechanical power. If we absolutely have to go solar, then so be it. Power is a half mile away, so the possibility of having to fork out 10-15K might become a luxury that we can learn to live without. Might have to go all Neo-tribal on ya'll :D

Mark
you could always build a nice place under-ground and park an old trailer on top to keep the taxes down:D

turbine for mechanical power
, there you :D
there's a book out from the 40's that says you can live self efficient on 5 acres of land if done right, I believe them...:)
I'm sending for that one and one showing you how to make electricity from wood ( alcohol for a generator )
and you will end up with charcoal too I wonder what we could do with that??..:D
we've forgotten so much because of oil..:( :)

I got to wait at least 5 years for my youngest to get out of school.....Besides I did my travelin back in the coledge years and realized that I like it where I am. I will visit a lot of places when the kids are goan but Maryland will always be home. If and when you go I wish you luck and hope the invite for the visit will still be open.

So Neo-tribal aint necessairily a bad thing.

how about wireless satellite and for the batteries
hook up an exercise bike to the combo generator and grinding stone:D

I do have a generator :D

I dont see why the little solar driveway lights wouldnt give a nice glow through the house at night. The panel and battery doesnt have to be near the bulb:D

It can be done with the right system. Might cost a bit more to install initially, but it could pay off after 10 years.

Dan, The problem with your idea is big brother knows whats going on. When we first got the 5 acres I was talking about I built a small "A" frame on it plus an out house. We just used it for camping when the kids were small. You couldn't even see the place from the road. We had gone out there one weekend and they had red tagged the place. As long as I didn't have power to it it was fine. The problem was the out house. Guess there against the law. I found away to get around that. I think one of the neighbors turned me in. That was 24 years ago.

The most juice I ever draw at any one time would be 7.5 KW :)

I guess a nice windmill could provide soome mechanical power also. Have a main power shaft witha few pullies , reducers and and a governor. I could run a grinder and a drill. Heck thats all I use anyway.

go-glo sticks for light :D
Mark
I was going to make a windmill once but didn't:(
but for your gearing get a rear end out of a 1/2 or 3/4 ton pickup
and lock up one shaft by using one of the emer brakes on it..
two 55 gal drums cut down the center and
the rest is easy to figure out :D
I'd go with storage batteries so you can store energy while your drinking beer and resting :D

Ray I know what you mean, they're everywhere:eek: :)
we have to have a permit for an out-house here now
.. unless it's grandfathered ,,
if you can say or prove it was there forever say 1967 ?you might get away with it..:D
but with kids now adays, the DHS likes to see running water and the works..:)

The windmill made with drum halves is an Arrhenius rotor and they usually are put together with three drum halves at 120° from each other.

For a few Gs investment, you can get all the power you could use in solar panels, batteries and a trace inverter. Good inverters put out cleaner AC power than the public utilities do these days.

Outhouses are illegal in Maine and Washington? That is unAmerican! You might try calling it a composting toilet and get away with it, or look into getting a real composting toilet (they are waterless and put out dry composted waste).
