hey guys im rawrzors, and i need a little help (indecisive)

The Recon-1 really isn't very heavy or big in the pocket, trust me, and without the liners (which newer models have removed) it's pretty light too.

I respect a lot of what TNP says (and I think he's more a 3oz guy than 4oz) but if you only go by 3-4oz knives I've found it really limits you. I used to think a lot of knives were really heavy but honestly, if you try them out awhile, even beasts like the Recon-1 aren't all that noticeable. Just my two cents.

true, but if i whip out a knife like that in public, people are going to get squeamish. just like with the whip noise of a assisted opener. i use my knife at work alot with people around. and i think a recon 1 is just too damn big. i cant justify something that big to my boss as "just something i use to open boxes and cut straps) lol

i would be willing to go over 4oz though, as long as its not toooo heavy. keep in mind i also walk to work, as its healthy, less dangerous than being on the road, and and wasting a perfectly sunny day in michigan is just downright stupid, its winter about 8 months out of the year here. lol

Hey man I live in Iowa, I know where you're coming from on the weather thing. ;)

Honestly off the top of my head, check out the Mikkel Willumsen Responder. 3.5" blade. It does weigh about 6oz rather than 4, and it's only 440C steel which some will frown on, but it's also still considered by many to be one of the decent old steels. Best of all, you can pick one up for $12 bucks and fit and finish is good enough that it could be priced considerably higher than that. That's just one suggestion off the top of my head. I recently picked one up and like it a lot.

EDIT: Just re-read your post, the clip on this one isn't black, never mind.

It can be tip up down right hand carry though, which you like.

there is one with the sandvik steel. im not sure if its the same as on the moraknivs or on the kershaws, but for 32 it would be a good knife. if im going to get a 30 dollar knife though, id rather go for an ontario rat1. not hating on the other, but i think the rat would fit me better.
but to be honest i want a knife with some nice steel. bring it to the gun and knife show at gibraltar once a month and have someone say "ooo thats nice" instead of "lol, you should buy a new knife" lol.

im not looking for something flashy like a sebenza, just something nice enough that i wont be embarassed to show other people.

Yes, Rat-1 (and Utilitac II come to think of it) are both great and have black clips.

But for something nice, what other people are already suggesting are better options too I think.

For something a bit cheaper than the Para2, I would also suggest the Endura (also from Spyderco). It's probably my favorite Spyderco model.

i have been seriously considering the endura. vg10 is nice steel. would be good enough for me. just wish they made it in s30v or something even better. i also am really liking the manix 2 xl. i think a manix 2 xl lightweight would be just about a perfect knife.

Both great choices. I find the blade shape and size on the Endurance to be awesome.

Since you do gutting, I'd recommend the Matriarch 2...it even has an Emerson wave version if you're into that stuff. If the M2 is too big for you, go for the L'il Matriarch.

Strong lock, good for gutting, boxes, self defense....also due to the shape of the blade, you get amazing leverage to complete your work in a flash, since they will be pull cuts...you can go for push cuts by using the belly of the blade...win-win!

I'm not a knife self defense fan.
I looked at all the pictures and I think the RAT 1 looks the most jury friendly.

You might also consider this:
Keep a beautiful tiny folder at work - wood scales, brass bolsters, razor sharp but innocent looking. Use it in front of your coworkers. Keep your tactical black death knife hidden. I'm not saying you should carry two knives - no one wants the DA saying, "He carried TWO knives..." But use the small "Tom Sawyer" knife for utility at work.

Get this when it comes out:

Emerson/Kershaw CQC-6K

You can pull it out of your pocket and the little hook will catch on the corner of your pants, opening it as you draw. And it's going to be very cheap, probably around $30.

usually a multitool for that stuff =] only pull out the " mass murderer rampage knife" when i need something nicer. lmao its funny how people think any thing that can be used as a weapon is only for people who want to kill people. blows my mind how close minded and racist your general open minded tolerant libtard can be.

All the knives you are considering are great large utility knives with SD potential, I don't imaging you'd go wrong with any of them, I own them all. If you can get to a store try holding them and see what fits your hand best. I like liner locks, have never had a problem with them, surprised there are lots of vids of the Blur failing given its reputation, mine are very solid.

I would say the PM2 seems to draw the most raves, if you are going to use it for years then I doubt you will notice the difference in cost over that time. Personally I find the compression lock is somewhat harder to work than others but maybe that's just because I'm so used to liners and frame locks.

the whole point of this thread was to get a great utility knife, that can do very well if i ever need it for self defense. I'm not going to carry a hand gun illegally. I'm just not that stupid. the 12 gauge sits next to my bed all day and hardly ever moves unless im taking it out shooting.
I'm not trying to be a tough guy and im also not dumb enough to do something daily that has a 10 year minimum sentence. all of the "the law be damned guys" have never seen what its like inside a prison. i havent personally either, but tbh, tv showed me enough prison for me to learn its not a five star hotel.

those little tiny 1 dollar ridge runner knives are good "utility knives" but id be better off punching the guy.

im not going to carry an espada daily... just too damn big... if i forget my belt the thing will pull my pants down lol. and yes i have remembered my knife and forgotten my phone wallet keys and belt before. lol

I would rather buy a nice knife, good for utility first, good for self defense second, but have it and not ever need than have a box cutter and need it.

i definitely see what you meant though.

I thought the whole point of the thread was this:

I live in a supremely shitty area (Detroit. Real Detroit, not Metro Detroit, but really in Detroit.) So I want a bigger knife, more apt to self defense than anything else. I am acutely aware of the fact that more people are murdered in detroit than soldiers die in afghanistan.

So self defense is my main concern, in honesty.

So you are looking for a self defense knife. All I did is point out that carrying a knife for self defense is stupid.... which it is.

Just get a knife you can carry for utility primarily. If you happened to need to poke a hobo, I'm sure anything you choose will work.
