Hi guys, I'm new here.
To start ill introduce myself. You guys may or may not know my cousin ChrisFa. I am starting to get into liking knives and he suggested that i register here and ask around for some advice when I asked him for advice. He told me that he does not want to give me advice and end up making me turn against the hobby like he has himself. He also told me that he is probably the worst person to ask for advice because he can't even decide on a knife to buy and keep for himself.

Right now i have a SOG Aegis that i have been carrying around because I got it for a good discount. But I feel like it isn't such a quality built knife. Its constructed of all plastic handles and no matter what I do it has side to side and up and down wobble.
I feel like maybe it would be a good time to find a new knife to get. Now i don't know where to start, I spent 45$ for the SOG. I'm not sure what i should spend to buy a good quality long lasting blade.

I don't plan on getting real into the hobby like some who spend hundreds on one knife, Now I'm not saying there is anything wrong with those of you who do that but i just cant see myself doing it. I rarely use my knife as it is. I want something that is going to be I guess cool looking, but made well too. If you guys have any suggestions I would appreciate hearing them because I honestly don't know where to start or what brands are even worth looking at. I have i guess pretty big hands so id like a bigger sized knife. My legal limit here is i believe no more then 4 inch blade length, But I know I wouldn't even need more then that anyway. I will also carry it everyday, most of its time will be spent closed in my pocket or just being fondled for fun.

If i do use it its usually for just opening mail or some strings off of clothes. I occasionally cut up food if I get a snack while I'm out and it needs to be cut. I never consider using my knife in self defense, I don't know how to knife fight so i figure I would just get myself hurt if I attempted it without the proper training.

So yea, that sums it up. Something on the little bit bigger side, under 4 inches, and is interesting and visually appealing. Also something that might be worth noting I have problems in my thumb on my right hand from injuring my thumb when I was a child so that might make a difference in lock mechanisms. Iv used a lockback before and it was uncomfortable to unlock, the lock on my SOG isn't too bad to use for me, I have never handled much more besides that though.

Alright thanks for taking the time to ready my long post, I appreciate it.

P.S My name is Shawn.

If your thumb is not that good I would suggest looking at something with a flipper (a flipper is a knife that you can open by pushing the blade out with your index finger). The Kershaw Skyline falls in your price range and is a flipper. If you want to stick with SOG, the Twitch XL is also flipper, and assisted, but it's a lock back.

Welcome to BladeForums by the way! I started off by getting a Kershaw Leek thinking that I only wanted one good knife since I didn't use it that much as is. Now I have over 20 maybe? And that's nothing compared to other guys here! I just started like 2 years ago :D

I have noticed a trend of black and silver or black and black for most knives. Anything have any color to it? Maybe a bit different color in the handles?

Spyderco makes knives of all kinds of colors. If it's gonna be your only knife and you plan to use it for everything, I would also suggest looking into the Spyderco Pacific Salt. It will never rust, you don't have to worry about taking care of it, and it comes in yellow. It's also on the larger side (lenghtwise), but easy to pocket because it's slim.

Yellow is cool, Also would show up good if i dropped it while i was out walking in the woods.

First things first, how much do you want to spend?

For around the price of your SOG you're looking at knives like the spyderco tenacious line (ambitious, persistence, and resilience being the other models), many kershaws, and a few others like the ontario rat-1. In my opinion, for around $40 you are going to have a hard time finding something better than the tenacious, and they come in blue or green in addition to the standard black.

Bump up your price limit a bit to $50-75 and you're in spyderco endura/delica or benchmade griptilian/mini grip territory. The endura/delica and the griptilians do have plastic-y feeling frn handles, but they are very tough and durable and are truthfully a very practical handle material. Knives like these would cost $100+ if it weren't for the frn handles, so keep that in mind. Also in this range are some of kershaw's higher end models with upgraded steels like the eschelon, s30v or composite d2 versions of the leek and the composite d2 junk yard dog. Buck's vantage pro is also an excellent value with s30v blade steel and contoured g10 handle scales for around $50.

In the $100ish range things start to get more interesting. In this range you're mostly looking at mid level production knives with premium materials. S30v, vg10, and 154cm are par for the course blade steels in this category and you'll be looking at typically g10 or aluminum handles. The stand out knives around $100 include the spyderco paramilitary 2, g10 manix 2, sage 1, and vg10 caly 3.5. The benchmade Ritter grip (Ritter rsk mk1) is a spectacular knife for $100, and there are a few others like the 707, 710, presidio, and bone collectors that can be found for a bit more scratch. A used zt 0350 or a blemished model can also usually be found for around $100. With that said, the most recommended (and best in my opinion) knife around $100 is going to be the spyderco paramilitary 2, it really is a spectacular knife in nearly every way.

Not sure if you'd be willing to go above the $100 mark, but if so you are now looking at high end spyderco regular production models and sprint runs with exotic steels, most of benchmade's lineup, zero tolerance, and some emersons.

Good luck on your search and keep us posted.

I think I'm more in that 50-75$ range, I cant see myself spending over 100$ on a knife for my uses.

Welcome Shawn, I once said that too. I was looking at a ZT 0301 and thought, "who would spend over $200 on a knife" :D

Well, this guy did :foot: Once you get started in knives you may catch the disease. Just a friendly warning.

I like Kershaw knives a lot, a few to look at are the Blur and the G10 Speedbump. You might like the speedbump more because it is a stud lock, easy one handed operation. The Blur comes in a few colors that are currently available. Green, Purple, OD, Desert sand and a Carbon fiber version with CPM-154 Blade at about $100. Regular Sandvik Blade at about $50, The speedbump if found is usually around $60.

Good luck finding your knife,

Bob

Never know, I might get real into it, right now I'm not though. From what i hear being on this site is like buying a kilo of coke to try 1 line though.

In that case then if go with a endura or a griptilian, or a delica or mini grip if you want a smaller knife. The spydercos are available in several colors (black, blue, green, orange, brown, and gray). The benchmades come in with black scales, but a od green version is out there as is a rustproof orange handled version in the full size griptilian. If it were me, I'd go with the griptilian. Get the full size if you want a more hand fulling knife, but in my opinion, the mini grip is one of the best edc knives out there.

man there is so much stuff, this is hard.

You might want to look in the for sale sub forums. There are plenty pre-loved great shape blades in there and some at good discounts!

You might want to look into flippers with your thumb issues. They are very fun to open! check the kershaw rake for a bigger flipper knife that is assisted opening.I think it is the closest knife kershaw makes to a ZT. It also has the composite edge wich is two steels copper brazed together for extra coolness!

Welcome Shawn, it's great to have you with us! It's neat that you share so much with your cousin chris farms: interest in knives, a great girl (I know you don't share the same girl! :), I mean that you both have a great girl), you two fellas even post in very similar ways! Family!)

Anyway welcome, and let me suggest the Kabar Dozier Large Folding Hunter. I have one, it's just under 4 inches if I recall, it's made of excellent (IMHO) AUS-8 steel, it's inexpensive (20-30 bucks), and it's well built and intelligently designed.

I love mine...it is an awesome deal.

Enjoy Bladeforums!

Welcome to the forums, sir. As relative newbie, myself, I have to say you are in good company here. Sure wish I'd known about this place back in '98. Coulda saved myself from buying all sorts of wall hanging junk. Once again, welcome aboard :D

He sold me it for 45$, that's how I got my first knife. He was trying to sell all of his stuff for the past few weeks saying about how he is sick of it and wanted to get rid of it all.

I stay at his house on weekends sometimes but I don't see him too much he isn't around alot.
