Hey guys.

I prefer the over head, wide downward arc to a underhanded pitch motion, (at about waist level) I flick that sucker open. I have only had the blade shear off and bounce across the floor once, and it gets quite a reaction from bystanders. :)

I love to tinker with stuff, I'm actually trying to figure out what I'd need to make scales. Hoping it wont require a lot of money in tools because i don't got too much of that right now.

you're in luck then. all things considered its a pretty cheap hobby. check out the website for USA knifemakers or alpha knife supplies. my opinion, G10 is cheap as dirt. so is the little bit of oil/lube you'll use to bring out the scales luster. besides that you'd need a dremel tool or other rotary tool ($80), a drill (which most people already own), one or two clamps ($2 a piece give or take for little ones) and either a respirator ($50) or just a dust mask (though most people will suggest a resp) and your set. So i Guess the startup cost is a bit but the ongoing costs are pretty cheap. no more than buying a new videogame console and much less than most athletic equipment. if you go used you could probably get that stuff even cheaper.

it doesn't get really expensive until you decide you want to make your own knife from scratch. then a whole new mess of tools, supplies and services come into play.

Doesn't sound too bad, if i practice i could always make my money back by making scales for others when i get better.

Indeed. also, if you really want to make a high quality scale, I suggest a pair of digital calipers for really precise measurements. they're only about $20. They are not necessary, but they help a lot if you want really really strict tolerances.
also, I see you might be going with a skyline, that was one of my favorite to customize, its easy to customize to, its hard to screw up. if you take your time with sanding out the recess for the thumbstud/stop pin it will result in a tight lockup even if you do a sub par job of drilling out the pivot holes.
having said that BE FOREWARNED! the first time I flicked open my skyline I got a really long and deep gash on my pointer finger. it wasn't even from the blade, it was from sliding my finger on the G10. still got a scar from it actually.
