hey it's Sunday Guys? what the he!! are you doing anyway (:>(

I spent the day at my shop. A friend wanted to change his flint pistol to percussion so I made a perc lock to fit the lock inlet. I get to keep the flint lock in trade so I feel we were even -- I made that lock about 20 years ago any way so it's home again.

My friend brought along his competition service rifle to show me. It's an M16 / AR15 and I had not handled one of those since the early '60s when they let every one at the National Matches fire one at 300 yd. rapid fire.
Back then I was firing an M14 and thought it the most accurate rifle I ever fired. Time has sure done wonders for the M16 / AR15 rifles for they are now considered tack drivers. One of my friends just set a range record with one at 600 yds -- a 200 with just a ton of Xs. I wonder what the future will bring?
I must say I had a wonderful day :D

Catching up on sleep, vegetating, looking up new parts so I can build a new computer, and, getting ready to start a new round of working 6 or 7-day weeks.

I took him to the doc the other day when he could still stand and he said there was nothing more he could do, he needed them replaced. He fell off a bridge on a construction job in 94 and been dealing with it since. Anyway, he has an appointment the 18th to talk to a surgeon but he doesn't have much money coming in, only his partial retirement and ss (he just turned 62 this last August) We are trying to talk him into it. I will sell some of my cars and stuff if he will do it because I can't see him suffer anymore like he is now.

doesn't he have medicade? being on SS ?

I'm using the auto store type. I've had good luck with it so far. I put some on the Aceital handle I had and I've really put that hatchet through the mill and still haven't chipped the liner.

Not a bad idea about the bosses but it's already cast, ground and I've got it covered with epoxy now.

Maybe next one.

thanks Don I'll have to give it a spin.

I finished a nice little Eggerling damascus hunter I put together last night, cut out and rough ground my "spec ops" knife. Then we took down the Christmas tree and I fell on my ass carting it across the yard. After that, I moved a big pile of wood thats been living in our library since sept when we started on the shop/addition project. I am ready to be horizontal!

Nope, But I don't know why. He was in much less pain earlier today and wanted to go to the bathroom (besides in a cup) We got him in the wheel chair and to the bathroom and he made his knees worse getting on the pot. (No room for us to lift him, he had to stand and turn around) This guy is the toughest person I have ever seen in my life. One time years ago he was cutting up a tree for his old doctor and hit a wedge that had grown around the tree. The saw flipped back and het caught the blade and flipped it away but it still cut him open from chest to belly button and almost cut his thumb off at the meaty part of his hand. The doc sewed him up and he finished the tree a couple days later full of stitches. This is much worse pain, he can not take much more. This kills me. Medicade would be a God send. I will see what is up with that.

Didn't get nothing done in the shop this weekend,Flea market with our Groceries yesterday with hardly no traffic so it was a bad day for sales :grumpy:
Today I found out just howm much of a mechanic I am not,The water pump went out on Donna's 93 camaro and I figured how hard could it be :footinmou    Heck I could change one on my old 78 in a hour or so,But these newer models I thin were put together by little people with micro tools, heck coulden't get nothing to work like it was supposed to,after a few wrenches went flying across the car port (which I never do) and getting kind of grumpy the day was gone and after about 6 hours I finally got it apart, now tomorrow I will put it all back,I hope it goes better so I can get some time in the shop before work on Tuesday at the yard..

Man this weekend SUCKED!!!!! Seems everytime I think I can get things done in the shop something else goes wrong around here to stop me.Guess I need to go back to not sleeping and get in the shop at night.

Yep. I hate new cars even cool chevys. Took my buddy (who builds race cars and big blocks) 8 hours to change the water pump in his womens 96 GMC Jimmy. He is ready to burn that thing to the ground. Anytime he fixes it something completely different goes wrong. That Vortec 4.3 ain't anything like the good old 4.3's at all.

This is on a 4.3 V6 and I am dreading anything else going wrong..I think The mechanic up the street gets the thing from now on..I will take the Old 350 Chevy's anyday ,were talking 78 or OLDER.Something a man can climb under the hood and fix..
Bruce

Dan,
I asked them and they said you have to be 65 to get medicare.
Bruce,
You got it! I am going all 454 stuff though because I have a rebuilt one for my chevelle and am buying a rolled truck with one in it. My 56 belair has a 350 in it (Put in later of course). I don't know if I am going to put the extra big block in it or use it for the roadster. I am hoping soon to not have anything newer than my 66 chevelle on the road. I am going to try and find an older chevy truck to put on a 4x4 frame I have.

Dan, are you talking to ME? of Larry Nowicki? Doesn't really matter except, I broke a 3/16" X7" drill bit off in that piece of wood, (because I didn't clear it enough) ruined a real nice piece of wood, and to add insult to injury, a replacement drill bit from McMasterr Carr is about $25:mad: , probably can beat that price by a couple of $.

Hey Trick,Now thats what I am talking about..I want to find about a 53 0r older chevy panel for my daily driver,Had one and sold it years ago(Mistake)now I am in the prosece(spelling?) of rebuilding a 74 International 4X4 pickup for me and Donna to go run through the woods in,If I could just find some time to work on it as it isn't a real must, to have at the moment, but I am missing having a truck around when I need to haul something.

Got all the parts today to put the Camaro back together, now if I can get it done so I can work in the shop..
Later,

:D piece of Cake Bruce :D
hey if you guys run into tech problems I had to up date all my manuals this year to keep my State of Maine motor vehicle inspection license so I'm up to date.
$450.00 later ( we can't buy the reg books we have to get the pro editions ) plus a new head light aimer for $500.00, for the new type head lights. I'll be glad when I'm completely out of it...but I don't what anyone else inspecting my vehicles  :D
I hate to give the garage license up I've had it for like 18 years and my mechanics license for 27 years.

your in for a treat with the International pickup :)
they used everything under the sun for parts for International, it was so bad you had to have the line ticket to know what parts to buy :D
Bruce see if you still have yours
I think the P/U's had them stuck to the back side of the glove box
( the real bacck side you have to fold the box out of the cover whole if I recall.
or over the visor  do you have a slant 4 engine?

It's worth it Dan. I have an old fellow who does my inspections. I give him $50.00 a car and he passes them.
I do all my own mechanical work. Inspections here cost $15.00 but the garages always find about $100.00 wrong. Arguing with them is useless.
One time I had a Mail Jeep. I think it was a 68 or so, before they went to all unleaded. The inspector went over it with a fine tooth comb. He turned it down because it didn't have the flap in the filler neck. (they didn't have to when it was made)
Anyway he wanted $300.00 to replace the entire tank.

I wouldn't pay it and he put a rejection sticker on it. I went straight to DMV and put Antique tags on it so I didn't need an inspection.

Your getting off cheap inspecting your own.

Dan,I am putting a newer model 340 V8 out of a scout in it along with the scouts trany.Would have rather built another old Chevy 4X4 but this was what was in the best shape or should I say the only 4X4 on the yard.Thought it was a fitting truck to build as my step Dad worked at the International shop for years when he was younger and he uses them on all the machines that we use at the yard,so he should be able to help out some.

OK on the IH.

Edited
Bruce what was the problem that you had to replace the pump in the first place?
leaking or over heating?

the only thing that ever happens to a water pump (normally) is the bearings and seals, as long as they turn properly they will pump water as long as there's no air traps and the water is up .

make sure you have at least 50/50 coolant (it's anti boil as well as anti freeze )in the sty NO plain water
those switches don't start working until they heat up to about 225-235
and where plain water boils at 212 the fan will never come on..
and you'll boil over setting idling. without it being straight wired as you have it now.

some of those systems trap air (air lock) see if you have an air bleed on the top of the thermostat housing.
if the above is OK
find the (two wire) fan coolant switch, (on or around the thermostat)
unplug it and jump the two wires, with key on..if the fan works
it's the switch (computer coolant temperature sensor)
that switch works the fan relay
, if the fan starts the fan coolant switch will be the prob. (normally)

if it's the fan ele sty only it will not boil over out on the road (you'll be pushing more air through the rad. than the fan can)
if it boils over or over heats out on the road, check air trapped in the system.
