Hey, new to knife making, advice on my current project? (and pics/build thread)

Heh you should send me the pattern for that knife and ill make one and lets trade! LOL Im really liking the design. Its different yet pretty nice.

i could trace it out i guess :) I pretty much freehanded it actually as the longest knife i could possibly get out of the chainsaw bar that i had :) glad you like how it turned out.

I very much had a scimitar in mind doing this. My typical knife design has the blade and handle forming a gentle S shape.

(btw, im guessing by your name that you ride a CBR900? good choice, it was between that and the 94 Suzuki RF900r i eventually went with)

Yeak i see the scimitar in it and I think thats what draws me to it. Kinda liek a small curvy sword effect. Yeah I learned on a cbr900 (wasnt the smartest thing in hind sight lol) but loved that bike!

Now i guess i gotta do something about that electrical tape and paper bag "sheathe". never done any leather work before, suggestions?

You should check out the Chuck Burrows Sheath making DVD. He covers pretty much anything you'll want to do for a while.

Anxious to hear how it holds an edge after you did your ht unless I missed it somewhere. Nice file work. Finish that puppy up,

i plan on chopping through a 3 inch diameter branch a few times, see how well it holds that edge. methinks its gonna be a much tougher knife than harder.

not sure what else i could do to finish it up?

Another option I use as a FYI is permalyn gun stock coating. Makes it pretty much weather proof and you can sand and polish it up very nicely. Real easy to use stuff too. Aplly 2-3 coats then sand with 300-400 up to around 800 and wax buff whatever you want to finish it off. Ive used it on micarta, wood, just about any knife handle material takes it well.

well, i used the knife to chop down our christmas tree! :D seems to hold an edge decently well, needs further testing
