Hey Sal, Military compression lock still in the works?

I would strongly prefer a mid back lock. I cannot stand liner locks or frame locks on a knife that is designed to be used in the field. The Comp Lock is stronger than the liner or frame locks, but the downside is that it still requires the use of a detent.

The Police 4 is probably as close to a back lock Military as we are likely to see. Personally, I see no need for a new iteration of the Military, but I'd be just as happy with a friction folder version as a comp lock. I think locks are over-rated. They facilitate the developement of bad habits and poor knife-handling skills.

Well, that depends on the job. If you've ever had a knife close on your hand then you'd sing a different tune. I've had jobs where knives got really used, and used hard sometimes (not abused). I've had a couple of knives close on my hand and I've seen people nearly lose fingers because of this. A strong lock is the best thing for a knife designed to be used in the field. The only upside to a liner lock is that the knife might be easier to clean, but is not certainly easier.

Bad habits or not, I don’t carry a fixed blade everywhere and I don’t want too use a slip joint for most knife-related tasks. I want a lock, and I want it to be reliable, strong, and easy to use. I find the compression lock to meet that criteria very well and would certainly be interested in a Military model with one. Also, Sal stated this doesn’t mean the liner lock version would be discontinued; it would simply be an additional option. Options are never a bad thing as far as I’m concerned, and those who don’t like the Comp lock certainly don’t have to buy one.

Oh man!
I just hope Spyderco re-releases some of the older runs of steel offered in the Millie OR mix it up with some funkiness (Rex 45 ,ZDP-189, M390, k390, etc.)

You know.... the ones we all couldn’t grab in the first 3 seconds they were up for sale

(Personally) I feel the demand is there, the design of the Military is excellent, just wanting to run them in different flavors

As a long time user I also don't see any need for a change.

But there is a group of voices crying for changes and thinking new = better, over the time they will learn that is not true for all cases. ;)

Ok, sure. But in this case, Compression lock> Liner lock. It has all the advantages of a liner lock (ease of opening and closing, allows for flow through construction, no extra parts), but makes the knife stronger and safer. I love the military with the liner lock, its actually one my favorite knives of all time and certainly my favorite Spyderco. Its also one of the best executed liner locks on the market and one of the only ones I will carry and use hard without hesitation. The blade shape is perfect, the ergos are perfect, I love everything about it. That being said I see the compression lock as being an upgrade and one that one increase the knifes capability, not just change for the sake of change. The best part is a compression lock could be added without changing anything else about the knife. Other models have been offered with various lock types, like the sage and manix etc. I am curious what exactly do you think the advantages of a liner lock are over the compression lock?

The only reason I don't own a military is there is no option for tip up carry. I'd have one already if it had the option.
I understand it's supposed to be easier to open with a tip down carry, but honestly my Resilience and Native Chief are both tip up and I have no trouble opening them and don't even have to move my hand to get to the opening hole.
The military 2 is supposed to have a 4 way clip. If so, I will have one.

I have been waiting forever for an updated military

Please move this up the list to number 1

I forgot to say in my last post in this thread that the military was designed to be used with gloves on. The compression lock would be a pain with gloves and a back lock still a bit difficult.

i use my Military with gloves frequently and comes out of my pocket, opens, cuts, closes and returns to my pocket with one gloved hand with ease. Its also why so much of the knife rides above your pocket. Its easier to retrieve with gloves on because the entire pivot area is there to grab. A feature I have noticed also is that less pocket fuzz accumulates in the pivot, lock/lockbar interface because that area isnt down in your pocket

The military is spyderco’s buck 110. leave it be, want another knife? There’s about a billion others.
this being said, if spyderco wants to release a military with a comp lock and leave the og alone and still available, so be it.

I’ll say that the only thing ever keeping me from owning a military was the liner lock. Not that it’s a bad one, reports say that it’s an excellent example of a well made liner lock.

I just trust a compression lock more to not close when loaded or vibrated. For a large folder, that’s important to me. Can’t wait to get one.

I am determined not to buy any new comp-lock knives, I have too many already. Trying to sell a few, while keeping a few.
