hello my fellow wilderness forum dwellers. :D

my birthday is coming and i would like suggestions on a general purpose utility knife mainly for camping and hiking. :)

My budget is around 100 dollars. :o

looking for a full tang knife, needs to be rust resistant (i like to go fishing often), would prefer it not to have a coating.

welcome to all suggestions. the only one i've been eyeing for now is the cold steel master hunter in san mai

all suggestions are welcome.

thanks

JC

Leatherman Wave- $75
Mora Clipper or 2000- $10-$30

I bet you'll get a LOT more use from a Leatherman (esp as a fisherman) than a single knife. I like the Charge Ti series, but the Wave is very similar and gives you room for a good Mora and still be within budget.

Not much you can't do with those two tools.

If you're looking for knives only, my favorites are:

Custom- JK knives ("Stomper" on the boards). Hiker or Kephart style.

Production- RAT RC4.

already have the LM wave as well as a buncha moras.

the RAT RC4 looks like a fine bush knife

I have the master hunter and it's a nice knife...
A little overpriced when for cheaper you can get an f1. and the f1 is sweeeeet.

The RAT is certainly a good knife. I would strongly consider some of our custom makers too though. You can get a knife to your specs for about the same price as a RAT.

Check out the custom for sale area and see what style you like best. Stomper, Fiddleback, and others I know I'm forgetting make some awesome blades.

You can't go wrong with a Fiddleback Forge - Check out the Nessmuk or Bushcrafter.

Alternatively, consider a Grohmann. The DH Russell No.1 Original is a great all-around outdoors and bushcraft knife. The No. 4 Survival model is also excellent, if you're looking for something larger.

Of course, the humble Mora is both cheap and effective, and you can get a small collection of them for $100 ...

All the best,

- Mike

i have grohmanns as well :P

thanks for the suggestion on the fiddleback mentor, i'll have to take a peek at them :D

The F1 sounds like what you are looking for, as well as bark river knives, though they are not well liked around here lately.
The fiddleback bushcrafter does indeed look very nice, theres a few makers on here that make excellent blades.

Jeez man keep up !!!!

They are hated by all of us on this forum and I have offered myself to perform the nasty task of disposing of them all so if ya have any send me an e-mail and we will sort out the details as to how ya can send them to me !!!.....ps I will not charge you a cent and you will never have to look at them ever again !!!!

cs master hunter is a good choice, but...
the F1 is also a great choice, even better, its stronger, has VG10 steel as core, which is better in edge retention and ease of sharpening, and an exposed tang, so you can use it for more tasks :D
keep in mind that the f1 has a convex edge, if that makes any difference
