Hey xaman

Okay Tony and Cobalt ----

Find me a good cyclecross deal!

I'm a total newb, but would like to get something decent (means it won't break or fall apart AND it should be fast enough to respectfully enter as my ride for a olympic distance triathlon.)

Suggestions???

just like with knives it all depends on how much you want to spend. Typically a decent cross bike will cost you a minimum of about $1000. Treks XO series is good. Surly makes a solid one and their frame is really nice. Fuji also makes great bikes at great prices. check your local performance stores they usually offer deals that no one can match. I think there use to be Supergo's in LA area and they were bought out by performance but not sure if they changed name. They had great deals as well.

Cool, I'll start researching...

I saw a Fuji that felt good, don't remember the model name off the top of my head, but the package with 105 components was about 850, the one with ultegras was about 1200. Both of those seemed significantly under retail...

if you will be doing lots of off road riding and racing go with 105 because you will probably be replacing parts and 105 is cheaper. If you will be mostly doing road riding with off road every so often then ultegra is excellent. In shimano groupsets for road bike the levels are as follows:

Dura-ace - top of the line race group.
Ultegra - just about as good as duraace but a little heavier and cheaper
105 - solid and a common amatuer race groupset.
Tiagra - as low as I would go on a bike you use often
Sora - Anything lower than this and you might as well go get your bike at K-mart

For mountain bikes:
XTR is top of the line raceable
XT - is below it and excellent
LX - Is the lowest I would go
Deore/Alivio - sucks

All these sets comprise, shifters, brake levers, front and rear Drl's, blade calipers, cassettes, hubs, cranksets and bottom brackets.

Which brings me to my next point. The crankset is more important than most realize. When you buy the bike make sure the crankset is good enough that the chainrings are machined, not formed. LX and Tiagra use formed chainrings and they bend easily making your bike make all kinds of sounds and causing ghost shifting problems. XT and 105 are minimum cranksets here and I usually upgrade this to the next level up.

OK I'm thinking....

Well not Time, Parlee... too bad for you:p

Not Calfee so that is a good thing,

Not fat enough for Scott

You are too cheap to get a Serotta....

Still thinking..... Could be a Look

lets see if tony can figure this one out. I bought this frame 17 months ago and built it up last year. I rode it a lot last year. C;mon tony what is it?:D

Hey Cobalt,

How come all your road bikes are set up kind of dorkey? Saddled pointed down slid forward on the rails, bars jacked up in the air with those boner stems and long cage derailleurs?

If we ever went on a ride together I’d have to be sure it was dark out so my friends wouldn’t see me with you.:p

it is my original fit that was tough to get right. believe it or not that is how they set them up for me and I had to flip the stems the other way or get 0 degree stems. Don't worry about your friends so much as most of them are to busy dating each other to worry about you. But your right, I would not fit in unless I was wearing pink gucci handbags like them

Glad you get the point. When we come upon good looking women I don't have any competition :D
.

No wonder Cobalt was so tired after moving across country. He had to ride all those bikes so far.

oh man, this is the last thing i needed --- to find a whole 'nother world...

I just spent an hour diversion learning about singlespeed pros and cons!!!

Cobalt, that surly gets good reviews, just seems heavy. I'm still looking. Do you know any great online stores that carry just about everything (so i can compare the specs of multiple bikes side by side?)

I know what you mean. I can't afford any more hobbies.

Between knives, hunting, fishing, kayak fishing, softball, golf, and woodworking, I have a plate full.

Unless Jerry springs the Muks or SARsquatches on us soon, my next big purchase is going to be one of these:

Looks nice --- what are you gonna be chasing in that? Tennessee, just fresh water up there, eh :D

Bass? I had an open top kayak for a while, not set up for fishing, but I did catch quite a few black bass from it. It's a blast, altogether different when you're right there at water level -- loads of fun!

Stripers and hybrid mainly, but anything that'll bite really.

I fish with a crowd down in north Georgia from time to time. Went to a tourney on the South Carolina coast with them back in October.

The green ride is mine. The yellow boat is the one that I want to get--the OK Prowler Trident.

Higher and dryer ride with some really nice features. Designed by kayak fishermen.

Okay, my thread hijack is over. Back to bikes...

Xaman,

Unlike Cobalt mine are all users. Here is what a good cross bike will get for you within an hour of the big ugly city.

NICE!

I'm getting a little lost in this new world (I feel like the newbs to Busse -- "what's a SFNO -- Satin Finish Natural Outlaw???) LOL

I spent another hour today reading why 29ers are the best...
