Hey you Hogs: Which folder for EDC?

While I realize many a true hog EDC a fixed knife like GW, AD or LMS, it's an overkill for most people. I keep a MOD CQD Mark I Auto in my large doc's bag, yet it is far too unwieldy to have it in a pants pocket (too many "or are you just happy to see me" jokes).

So I'm looking for a good mid-size folder that would fit in either my front or my back pant pocket.

I like the Sebbies very much but considering the many recent QC problems posts am somewhat reluctant to splurge 400 bucks for a classic one.

I'm seriously eye-balling the Al Mar SERE 2000 and based on the reviews I probably can't go wrong with that one.

Also, Spydie users seem a merry bunch, so a Paramilitary would most likely serve me well, too.

Any and all opinions are very welcome, as well as additional suggestions. Since I already contemplated getting all of them on more than one occasion, the "Just get them all" comments will not be very helpful :D

Cheers, Rok

P.S.
Yes, I too am waiting for Jerry to reveal his folder. Up until that moment, I need something else. And as much as I like my FBM LE in its leather pants, I'd get thrown in a mental institution if I tried EDCing that monster :o

Hi Rok,

Most of the time I carry my Spyderco Chinook II. But I do like the Paramilitary and the Kershaw/Zero Tolerance ZT0301 also!

I generally carry a Spyderco Poliwog or Spyderco Lava. Nice and compact, great feeling in the hand, and very solid. I also like their uniqueness and since I work with a bunch of computer geeks, and managerial type people, if people actually notice that I have a knife on me, it is more likely to turn into a conversational item than an "Oh my God, he has a knife!!" conversation.

No problems with my Sebenza, ever...

I've never owned a Sere, but everyone seems to rave about them. The old Benchmade 710 is a great one too.

QC problems with sebenza? They just won the "Manufacturing Quality" award at Blade for the 3rd time in a row that I know of.

I like the micarta sebenza...not as good as a fixed blade, but a sturdy folder. But there are alot of great folders out there...at all price ranges

Chris Reeve makes a nice knife...

For something cheaper I carry an older Microtech Socom MA.
Great quality and the older pieces can be found cheap on Ebay.
I paid $70 for the one I use....

CR Regular Sebenza here; went back and forth between folders for a while waiting for the Busse folder to materialize. Always end up back with the Sebenza ...

Benchmade 520 is one of my favorites, also like some of the Emersons.

Lg Classic Mayonized Sebbie myself. One of the last he did before he quit doing them. Been on my belt ever since.

It's also the only folder I own, but it plays well with the SHBA that stays on the other side.

You could always get a Strider and start flame wars with yourself. LOL

For me... it's either a BM 710 or a Kershaw Leek

Just depends on what I think the day will be like.

.

I rotate through the following;
Benchmade- Rukus, Skirmish, mini skirmish, 960.
Buck- Tarani, 880 sp.
Microtech-LCC
Kershaw spec bump to play with.
And I always have my charge TI on me.

There are a lot of great knives out there. Someday I will get around to buying a Sebenza.

Good luck.

I usually rotate through:

- Emerson CQC-7
- Reeve Sebenza
- Hinderer Firestac

The Sebenza and CQC-7 see the most carry duty though.

I tried a GW for an edc but I live in the city and it was just a little too large, maybe when I get my hands on one of the AAS coming out soon that'll work for me? Well as for your question I have nothing but great things to say about the following folders I rotate through:

Spyderco Paramilitary - very pocket friendly, has nested liners wich make for a really thin profile in the pocket, opening hole is a great size and the blade size and grind make it very usefull.

Spyderco zdp 189 Carbon Fiber Caly III - Probably the perfect size for a small edc, nice ergos and the blade steel is incredible.

Benchmade 14210 H&K - about the same size as the above with nice machined g-10 handles and a smooth as butter axis lock.

Benchmade Mini Rukus - a little larger than the rest, if you need a pocket tank and don't want to shell out for a CRK or Strider PT this is one hell of a knife, great handle too.

Hope that helps :)

I've got a Large Regular plain-handled Sebenza in a CRK belt-sheath, and a Spyderco Paramilitary clipped inside my front right pocket that I carry every day, some days I will also add the Leatherman Super-Tool to the belt.

Before I picked up the Paramilitary it was a Calypso Jr for about 10 years...

I recently bought a Lightfoot M1 and a Tighe Vangard, but so far haven't carried them as they are way too pretty ...

A Strider is next on my folder shopping list...

I've carried a Spyderco Military since it's release, my EDC is ATS-34, but I've got spares in 440V and S30V.

I carry CF SE Harpie when the Milly is too big for the venue.

I like light, thin folders.

Strider SnG or SMF. I picked up an AR at Blade, but it's a bit large for me for EDC.

I've Carried Alot Of Different Knives Everyday For The Last 30 Some Odd Years The Best For Me Is The Benchmade Afck 800s Or Fully Serrated Not Much This Knife Can't Do . Lifetime Warranty Sharping From Benchmade And If You Break The Blade The Replacement Blade Is Less Than $40.00 They Usually Rebuild The Complete Knife For That.

Small micarta sebenza here, great little knife. If it was INFI it would be perfect.
I also keep a Game Warden in my jacket pocket and a little SOG Crossgrip multitool in the watch pocket of my jeans. The multitool actually sees the most use, as I'm often surrounded by sheeple when I need to cut something.
