Hey you Hogs: Which folder for EDC?

Pretty much always carry my Benchmade 9050.. It's served me well for the past 5 years. Even after using it almost everyday during that time, it still looks great and works flawlessly! Most important though; I can operate it with my gloves on.

I also carry my Black Tie Warden in a Custom Okuden belt Sheath while on duty.. Just a great all around knife!

I have been using the Spyderco Lil' Temp for a while now with no complaints. I want to try some of the others though.

My favorite on the higher end was the Small Classic Sebenza from Chris Reeve. His S30V is a little softer than most, so it resists chipping a lot more. Actually I never had a problem with chipping at all. On the lower end I really like the Benchmade Griptillian in 440C, and for a bigger knife I really like the Benchmade 710D2 PE. The Axis lock is most definitely my favorite locking mechanism...stays tight (unlike lock backs) is incredibly smooth, and is 100% one hand operation (while quicker than liner locks/frame locks). I've been using a Griptillian as a beater for a couple years and it's still going strong. The lock is still rock solid with NO play. I'm surprised it's stayed this tight!

I also think the Benchmade Dejavoo is a cool looking knife, but have yet to handle/own one. For a folder around $100 you can't go wrong with a Benchmade knife! They're reputed to have a great service and warranty dept. I don't know though as I've never had a problem with one and sharpen my own knives.

How can anyone suggest mixing carry knives? I have an aversion to carrying two or more knives by different manufacturers at the same time. I'm also opposed to carrying a firearm not accompanied by knives with the same brand name. When hunting with a Browning rifle or shotgun I must carry a Browning folder and fixed blade as well. A custom or semi-custom knife goes well with an arm that has no knife companion and that's where SY, SW, and Busse come in. But to carry two mixed blades? Not an option! Before the Case Ruger logo knives were available, I was forced to scavenge a Ruger shield from a set of handgun grips to inlay into my favorite sheath knife.

One must obtain a Rat Trap, wait until another folder is offered from the "swamp complex", or carry two fixed blades from them. There is no other proper alternative. ;) Of course, one may carry two "swamp complex" knives with any firearm. Also, I suppose it may be marginally acceptable to carry a custom and a Busse, or... just forget what I said. I shouldn't press my phobias on anyone else.:D Regards ss.

Spyderco Manix is the Chit! And believe me I've owned many different folders at one time or another.

I'm a huge Spyderco junkie, so I have at least one Spydie on my person at all times (except while in the shower). I tend to pick up a new one every 2 weeks or so (or every week) so it's usually the newest one riding in my pocket. You can't really go wrong with any of their offerings, but my all-time favorite models include:
Yojimbo
Endura
Military
Manix
Rescue

I'm just now getting into the Salt (H1) models, and I really, really like them so far. There's a lot to be said for a knife that is flat-out incapable of rusting. Living in super-humid Georgia, and having a LOT of knives, I spend a good deal of time oiling my blades to keep them from rusting. The Salt knives you can clip into your swim trunks and go swimming and never have to worry about rust. Pretty cool. I like the Tasman Salt the best so far, it has a wicked hawkbill blade on it that cuts like nobody's business. It's basically a FRN Harpy.

I like Benchmade a lot, too. I've recently decided on the 940 as my all-time favorite. Though the 806, 710 and Rukus are excellent as well. I thought I loved the new Nitrous Stryker, but the D2 blade rust ridiculously easily, even when oiled. The Nitrous Stryker in 154-CM would be amazing. Uncoated D2 is a bad choice for a folder steel.

I can't wait until it gets cold enough that I can wear a jacket. I really want to EDC my AD or my Warden, but haven't figured out how to conceal them yet.

I guess I will be the Luddite who suggests a slipjoint. I usually carry one of these:

Lately, it's been the 5-bladed Nowland Sowbelly.

Cool, I carry slipjoints as well!
Usually a Case Canoe or a Laguiole, but I have the Schatt and Morgan Wildcat Driller coming in the mail along with a Queen and a Boker with tool steel blades (and a Case Hobo).

At work I use a Benchmade 940, but used to use the Rat Trap.

Since I found Busse and actually have fixed blades that I like (also Dozier and Bark River) I don’t have much use for folders. So now I mostly carry "socially acceptable" folders

Spyderco Kopas (I have just about every one ever produced)
Chris Reves Mnandi – yes I use it
Small Sebenza
BM Mini AFCK

A great looking little knife that I have not used yet is the BM 707.

Back before fixed blades I always though that the #1 bar none best deal in a big hard use folder was the Spyderco Manix and Mini Manix and (for the money) I still have not seen anything that can compete with them.

The SERE 2K is a very nice folder, but very heavy for its size. I doubt I’ll ever sell mine, but I also doubt it will ever get much carry time.

I have four Sebenzas, and two Mnandis, and rarely carry any folder other than a Chris Reeve. I’m yet to see anything but perfect fit and finish.

I used to carry a few different customs... Then I got this:

Hinderers_Front.jpg

The Hinderer XM-18. (Firetac Extreme in the back is a safe queen.)
I notice that now that's all I want to carry as far as folders go. One tough folder, and feels great in my hand. Fairly slim profile, I wear it on the front pocket, clip out. Other than another, it'll be the LAST folder I buy until the BUSSE folder.
:)

Emerson all the way!!! My CQC-15 is amazing, rock solid walk and talk with a scary sharp edge. I have also been through a ton of folders (Hinderer Flame, Strider SMF, SnG, PT, AR, Benchmade 550, 710......). It is all about you, I find folders are much easier to collect than fixed blades because they are so interchangeable. Decide on a good design, with good steel, and good people behind it. Led me to the Busse family, that's saying a lot.

After I got to handle a few at blade and needing one to give as a gift I ordered 2 Strider AR's. The Green one has been in my pocket since it arrived from Kaak :D

Personally, I never get the regular classic sebenza. I go with Wood classic sebenza for better grip & style.

I never like strider for whatever reason. don't like the look, don't like the price, too tactical. I never own one.

Spyderco Manix is my best bet for quality, price & feel.

Consider DDR? Gun Hammer is a killer to carry.

I'll pick DDR > Sebenza> Manix> Al Mar> Strider, in that order.

Of course there are more folder to choose from, RJ, Brian T.....etc. If money isn't a issue.

I regret highly on spend too much money on production folder. Cuz these knives really don't break, but i rather spend a good money on one custom for yrs....instead hv lots production folder but i only carry one at a time. They do pile up in long run and I don't use most of them and feel like a waste.

Depends on what I'm doing on a particular day, but its usually a Strider PT (during the week) and a Strider SnG (on the weekends). Occasionally I'll grab an Emerson CQC7, which stays by the door with the keys, on the rare occasions I don't have one on me already as I leave the house.

Sebenzas are OK but the S. Cook Lochsa that I carry is lightyears beyond. IMHO.

I alternate it with a Baily Bradshaw utility folder (self-lock, titanium handle, S30V blade). Lately my "off hand" pocket has been home either a Case peanut or tiny trapper. A little more discreet than thumbing open a 3.5" titanium-handled "tactical" knife, but so small that I can carry both without any issues.

Spyderco Lil'Temp for me. In my pocket every single day and does anything I ask of it. Holds an edge well. Sharpens like a dream. The most comfortable pocket knife I own (to hold/use)

BTW - not my photo. I have the second from the left, leaf blade PE model S30V. The "Rhino Horn" was 440V....
