Well in Africa they don't waste a thing. You can take an elephant and there wont even be blood left by the next day! Until you have had Giraffe gut soup you haven't' lived. We (Americans) cannot bring the meat back with us (USDA rules) so 100% of the meat goes to the Safari outfit and surrounding families/villages. Some folks eat lions, though most don't as they will eat carrion and can give you some bad stuff. The Waterbucks are very "musk" scented so in order to get the meat you have to skin very carefully or even a dog won't eat it (although Jackels, Lions, & Leopards) will.

While you are there every meal has lots of meat + you snack on Biltong (like Jerky but better) so the Safari camp runs through a lot of meat. Trust me the whole camp eats when you shoot well. If you shoot poorly and the lads are on melimeal only you will get some looks from the trackers! We were there 23 days and ate a bunch of critters with every meal. Interesting thing is if you get a "pork rind" looking crisp in SA you are eating porcupine skin an not pig. To my palette it is vastly superior.

The Afrikaners are known to be frugal and thus hunting is a huge part of the diet not to mention the Safari economy.

When returning to home the hides, horns, skulls, etc. are run through prep & clearance (takes about 3-6 months) for the proper permits. You think our hunting licenses and game laws are strict you should see SA! Every animal is tagged and tracked and you better have the license tags for it or it is very serious offense.

Had a guy tell me years ago that "absolutely everything he shoots, he eats". I ask him if he was sure he would eat "everything"? He answered "yes absolutely, no exceptions". I informed him he better go unload his home defense gun then because while self defense is legal cannibalism is certainly not. I have always found that absolutism is a mark of both dangerous and feeble minds.

Worry not, not a strip of flesh, a bone, or a coat/pelt was wasted. We had a great time & the hunting areas/economy of South Africa are better for it too. As soon as my hides, horns, & skulls return home (should be soon now) my Taxidermist will be a happy guy again!

PS: If you think Ennis is bad on speeding you should try Palmer (few miles up 45) they "ask" their officers to write 500+ tickets per month! No kidding a friend (and fellow LE) was a SGT there for a while. They exist to get revenue and that is about it! I will admit that I think the traffic enforcement divisions are abused for the sake of revenue generation. Texas has grants from the State to assist towns (like 35 person towns!) in getting Law Enforcement. First thing they do is hit the highway and start witting em. Heck they have an "online ticket payment" service here to for towns who cannot afford a Judge for court after they got their police department (Garrett as an example)! I have nothing against law enforcement as I was full time for a while and now am a reserve. I just think it is too easy for City Councils to fund the city on tickets with the states assistance.

That's what I like to hear! I'm not a hunter myself, but I'm not against it in any way so long as the meats not being wasted!

Being Canadian, most of my (limited) exposure to hunter's game/kills are deer, and have tried venison myself a few different times. That meat for sure doesn't get wasted, and I have no problem at all helping my buddies eat some delicious venison pepperetes or whatever other treats they have prepared!

To be honest I had no idea anyone was eating lion meat (my own ignorance), so I'm relieved to hear someone is getting a good meal out of it!

Part of me still feels sad seing such impressive animals killed though, I can't help that - I'm not PETA activist by any stretch, I just like wildlife, even dangerous wildlife [from a very safe distance]!

+10 on Biltong!!!

Also not quite like the real thing but you can order on line Boerewors that is made in the US.
For the rest of you its South African for ‘Farmers Sausage’.
