I believe I have the easiest answer to molding a Khuk for the Kamis. By and large ( with the exception of the handle) a Khuk is fairly flat. And really to reproduce it the kamis would only need to see one side as long as it showed the thickness and taper of the blade. So I belive the easiest way to do this will be to take a khuk spray it with mold release on it to seal it temporarily, then press it down into a flat bed of oil based clay with a box around it.pushing the handle half way down into the clay and leaving the blade mostly on top of the clay athough making sure it doesnt have any undercuts. This will allow the thickness and taper of the blade to be recorded Then take a slightly thin mixture of casting plaster and pour it into the box covering the khuk. Now vibrate the box really well( a vibrator sander works very well) this will get all the air bubbles off the khuk. Let this thing harden really well, flip it upside down peal away the clay and gently remove the khuk. (shouldnt be hard it you avoided all under cuts) From here you want to clean up your new open back mold. You may want to let it set for a little while longer to make sure its lost all moisture. From here you can spray the mold with mold release and pour an opaque polyester resin into the open back mold again vibrating the mixture to remove air bubbles from the surface. You can even lay fiberglass cloth into the piece after getting it poured to give added strength.

Well, Hope this gives everyone some ideas.

You could also use rubber for this process, but I believe plaster is easire to get ahold of for the average guy. Also, be sure to spray the sides of the box with mold release

I don't know what the kamis will do about blade thickness, distal taper and the like out of a nice molded piece although with a nice model they get it almost duplicated perfectly.
And the kamis do excellent work with even a less ideal model. One of our buds sent a cardboard model and the kamis made the khukuri it represented almost perfectly.
The name of the khukuri is "Beer Belly" and it most certainly is. This knife has the most belly I have ever seen in any khuk!!!!!!!!!:)

I think the way I have in mind to do a mold the taper will be in there although it will be a one sided open back pour.

If Berk wants to send me one of his choice I'll mold and cast it and see what we get. :) I believe it will work though

It'll work out Foxy. The kamis are a bright bunch of guys. We give them a lot of credit, but not always in the right areas.
I think they'll do alright.:)

OK, here's the offer. Email me yer snail-mail address and I'll send you what JP calls "a nice 19th century Nepalese military kukri" - a dui chirra with shallow fullers, wood handle, steel bolster and buttcap, full tang - something the HI kamis could duplicate fairly easily if they had a good model, and something that, if it goes up in smoke, was nice but not one of a kind.
If that model turns out OK, and the original makes it back OK, I'll send you the big dui chirra that you already have started the wood model on.
If that works out, I'll send you the hanshee with the silver buttcap I just got on ebay. And you'll send it back, with a copy for me, a copy for Yvsa, and one for the kamis:D

I gotta come up with a different name for the Bowie. I just really don't like the HIS(s)SB designation. Sounds to military er gubbimint sumthin.:rolleyes:

Bro you're gonna have to translate for me. I think I see a reference to knife in the last part of the word, but my Tsalagi is like a usdi usdii.

Got Berks Khuk today and will be getting down to molding shortly
