Well, WT if he did not offer to make it right, then that is not a good reflection on the seller. So I can more understand your frustration .
Even though it was the carriers fault, he needs to make it right . He is responsible for the knife until it gets to you in good order .

As suggested, the title has been changed - but my point OTHER than the poor packaging and subsequent damage thanks to both the seller and USPS that some seemed to have missed is:
1. Everyone else I've dealt with here on BF has let me know when the knife was shipped; this seller did not.
2. Everyone else I've dealt with on BF has usually provided a tracking number; this seller did not.
3. When I specifically requested a tracking number so I could trace the package and meet the USPS delivery, he did not provide one.
4. When I complained to the seller (which should always be anyone's first step and was mine) I got a minimal apology with no offer to make things right.
5. As a result, what was advertised as the knife's and sheath's condition as shown in the photo and what I paid for and received are two different things (I didn't even mention the missing lanyard until now)
6. As I posted, this whole deal went so far afield from all my other experiences on BF over the last 11 years or so, that I felt it ONLY FAIR that should say something. I've tried to keep it factual. 'Nuff said.

"Temper? I don't trust a knife or a man that doesn't have one . . ."

Removing the sellers name from the other thread shows good will.
Communication and a tracking number are very important. I still don’t understand how you could not get that info, since PayPal always sends that, unless the deal was not a paypal transaction.
While knife packaging doesn’t need to be hurricane proof, some moisture barriers should be included. The resulting package should not have any movement inside when you shake it.
You are not wrong to complain about getting a wet and rusty knife, and it’s very educational for members to learn how to avoid a similar situation.
Since the mail carrier is still the main culprit, I wonder if you there is a way that you guys can work together on an insurance claim, and get you some compensation for a devalued knife.
It is important that both members stay satisfied at the end of these knife transactions.

The wet package/rusted knife was a USPS problem. I don't waterproof my package, though they have enough tape on them to almost be. The package should never have been subjected to water damage. In my area where we get plenty of rain the carrier puts the package in a plastic bag if it won't fit the mail box. If they don't have the bags that day it goes back to the PO for pick up.
Not providing shipping and tracking info is on the seller
Refunding for the rusted knife again seller-either through insurance-claim should have been filed or if he didn't buy insurance he is self insuring. Rusted knife is a knife damaged in transit and should be treated as any other damaged package. Not sellers fault, but his responsibility. Buyer deserves the knife described in the ad.
Even if I didn't have insurance on the item I would file a complaint with USPS for their poor handling of the package.
This is just one of the problems that can arise when doing internet sales and needing to ship items. Not all will go smoothly. Luckily most do.
Learn from the mistakes and tighten it up a bit and all should go fine in future sale.

My local USPS (not a knife guy) says it was "mostly cosmetic" and unless it was lost, broken (how do you break O-1 and desert ironwood?) or I can provide proof of significant permanent alteration (?) to what was actually shipped/insured, there's not a lot they can do except make note for future deliveries.

No matter. After all that, I've since spent the last few days with oil, 0000, saddle soap, and elbow grease restoring the knife and sheath to its previous condition or close enough to it for my satisfaction (You know what they say, "If life hands you lemons. . .). The quality of the knife maker's work helped it come through with flying colors, so let's all just let this one go.

Thanks to you all for your input, whichever side of the barbed wire fence you were on - as for me, I feel like I landed with a leg on each side.

And I hope Tomahawk6442 stays with Bladeforums.

If only there was a way to know about incoming mail / packages without the senders input...
Oh wait

UPS has it too, Idk about FedEx but it's 2018 after all, they probably have something similar too
