Hi output flashlights

Norm -
I popped these in my Maglites. I don't know if the light output is that different - but the review site says that it is.

You don't change the pattern of lite with these adapters, just the output. If you want a focused beam, you get it. If you want a wide beam - I tried - it is not like a Surefire - that is for sure. You get all the problems as in the original. You still have the same reflectors working that you had in the original light, just a little brighter - and according to the reviews - the light output lasts longer for your batteries. It might matter in a storm.

I wound up getting a Surefire L4. It puts out much more useful light than the 6P - for 3X the money.

The Surefire web store seems in chaos right now. They are having big problems with their software.

for the money, a river rock 1.5 W 2xaa isn't too shabby (target)

for around 3W, the money is a good bet for a 1xAA fenix - pretty sweet

i don't know anything about the new line of Maglite stuffs... time will tell what they are doing - it appears that maglite *hired* someone to make the LED modules for them, as PR2 drops ins, and other conversions - kinda silly that they couldn't manage to do it themselves.

target and others have the nite-ize conversions, not the brightest, but better than the originals, and the run time is fabulous.

check out "HDS LED" with google - super bright...

surefire? me? right now, i'm trying to stay away from anything by them, they optimize runtime at full at 1 hr. that's not enough for me, what with their silly expensive batteries - if it runs AA or C, i'm happy. less so AAA or D, but those are standard and cheap. cr123 almost double in price the last year or so (oil/iraq they claim)... so, for a cool exotic flashlight, sure, but not for EDC...

WHAT do you want the flashlight for? how bright does it have to be?

How well do these NiCads work in the L4? Do they maintain light output over time?

Believe it or not, I wanted to get a very bright LED flashlight for use by people with low vision and reduced light sensitivity - NOT ME.

I already have a 6P. It is not nearly as bright as the L4 and not bright enough.

If you can get an inexpensive recharger and batteries for the L4, that would save lots of money over a conversion unit from Surefire, or their L7.

Tom, I was going to ask about these in this thread. I saw these at Home Depot the other day, but they were conversion units for the 3-D cell. They were about $16.

Do you guys think they would be worth it? Is it just the longer bulb life, or is the light output more with the LED? I am using the magnum star krypton bulbs in all my 3-D and 4-D cell maglites and they seem to be lasting very well, years in fact. However I would consider it if more light could be had. If not, I'll stick with the regular incandescent bulbs.

Thanks for any info.

Norm

Our HD had both the 3 cell and the 2 cell (C or D) conversion units for the same price - $15.99 IIRC. They work in any flashlight that takes the drop-in bulb (PR type?).

The light output is significantly brighter than the incandescent bulb -- and significantly whiter.

Running the head through the range of focusing, there are gaps/rings in the light pattern at most positions -- as is usual with MagLites. The position of greatest intensity has no gaps/rings.

Add to that much greater battery life and lack of a filiment to break/burn out and you have a good package.

The rechargables are the bomb. I love using them, and they give you a little more light.

I like that river rock except that it has a lens instead of a reflector, so there is very little spill. Its a tight spot.

Frank

i have most of the product line, and about a dozen overall :)

the lantern is GOOD...

the 2xAA and 2xCC are VERY GOOD - long long throw. good in tight spots like fixing a car, or looking inside things (computers)...

the 2xAAA has to be one of the niftiest small lights for $10 i've seen.

the headlight - well, i sold all my other LED headlamps after this one :)

princetontec makes a monster 3 W one now, that might compare favorably to my turbo-cat-usa model for biking ... well, that's 12W or so... the princetontec is about $60, and has MANY modes. also big. for the $15, the riverrock unit is kickass i must say. CAN be a bit tricky to change the batteries in the dark, (or light), when you are dead on your feet (the inner latch swivels too - d'oh! :P)...

but yeah, kick ass. i haven't tried their 1xAA yet - nothing TOO special, and the ones that use button cells - feh :)

the fenix... oh the fenix. i see a 3W 1xAA coming home soon.

maybe an HDS when i have LOTS of spare funds coming in. i'm barely working and i've already had to spend $400 in computer shite. have to stop that and save. might have to stop buying knives and axes for a few months or a year as well. enough enough :)

The HD45 is an awesome heavy-duty hand-held search-light running on 2 123 lithiums. If you can find one...:D

I've got the HDS B60LE, and its like sunlight in your hand. BUT, its not as bright as my FFIII, and it costs more.

Please translate HD60 and HDS...
I don't have a clue.
Isn't the FFIII a custom job?

Oh my khukuri's and flashlights in the same forum I'm in big big big trouble . I just bought a JetBeam Jet-1(MK1 original version). 1AA/2AA or 1 CR123. can't wait to get it.

James

Yes. FFIII is a custom job. HDS is a flashlight company who sells the EDC (Every Day Carry) in 60 lumen and 45 lumen models with different levels of customization ability.

I've heard that Jet-1 is a great light. Let us know what you think of it.

After reading this thread - and the one about the Fenix AA 1 watt, I picked up a Fenix L2T from the Fenix store. It is slick light, and even in low mode, puts out a lot of useful light.
I compared the low mode with a 2AA Maglite, and there is no comparison.

Worth the bucks, but I am tempted by the P1 - lots of light in a very tiny package.

Why to people get so up on flashlights?

Ok got it last week. My version is thew older MK 1 version. I think it's a fantastic little light. I've been carrying it for the last week on a lanyard around my neck or in my pocket at work. Nice tight spot with lots of usable side spill. I'm using Energizer 2500 mAh NiHm rechargeable batteries. This is a great light, easy to carry, great light for general use. I'm actually thinking about buying the MK II version with 3 stage switch (65%, 5%, 100% and strobe mode).

Thread veer alert.

Did any of you guys ever play "flashlight wars" when you were a kid?

Everybody would wait until dusk and then stalk one another, shining on the target for a "kill."

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

We used bows and arrows, slingshots, snowballs, "momaluches" at Halloween, peas in straws, linoleum rubber band guns, but I don't recall flashlight wars - except at camp.
All this stuff was before everyone had Tec 9s.

Back in the old days, serious wars used zip guns.

Awesome news on the Jet, not so awesome for my wallet though. Doh~!
