High dollar customs...to use or not to use.

Those customs don't called knives. They are expensive art pieces you carry as pocket accessories. Status symbols.
Everything can be done with $150 under knives with top quality steel.

No, you're wrong. Knives that cost more than $150 are still knives. And even if they weren't, are you seriously suggesting that men can't enjoy owning "status symbols", as you put it? Or are you one of those folks who actually believe that the only thing a knife is good for is to use?

Hey, buddy ! Long time no see !
Did you get rid of your Busse ?

I hate to say it, but you couldn't be more wrong with that statement.
Haven't seen you around in a while. I hope all is going well, friend !

I always thought that there was no better beater than a Rolex diver's watch.

The Rolex Sub is a tough and durable watch, and this makes it a good beater if you have the budget for it.

Is that Casio modded?

completely stock AFAIK

What are 3 things that every "operator" has?
Pickup truck, Rolex, and a divorce.

The Rolex is a good watch and has a lot of qualities that should be valued by watch enthusiasts. Unfortunately every "wannabe" wants to have one, to the point that people that want one for its qualities other than the name are afraid to buy one so they aren't viewed as "one of those types". I have an old Rolex sub and I no longer wear it for that reason.

The same thing has happened with BMW. People want to buy BMW because of the name and perceived status, but they don't know anything about cars and they drive the BMW like they would drive a cheap Toyota. It seems like these days 2/3 of the BMW drivers I see in the city are jerks, idiots or both. So the people that want to buy a BMW because it is a good car are afraid to do so because they don't want to be viewed as a wannabe in a BMW.

Well there is little of that in knives. If a person likes a CRK knife and has the budget for it, they can buy one and carry it without people judging them for it. (At least if they don't tell people what they paid for it.) My limit for expensive knives is well below a CRK but OTOH I have almost a dozen knives in my EDC rotation. I could have bought 2 CRK knives for what I spent on my current knives. I'm just not that interested in the CRK models.

Everybody buys a Sub... that's why I ended up with the Deepsea.

I probably would have bought a Rolex years ago but the biggest problem I have is losing them in the ocean. I have lost a few watches while surfing and the idea of losing a Rolex is a little more than I can bear. The pins on my watches have broken while dropping in (pushing up on the board) or eventually the sea and salt just deteriorates even synthetic bands. I decided that the $50-$100 surf watches with the one piece band are my best bet. I'm still envious of your watch though! :(

I've never purchased a Rolex while I was drinking and using. That's why it has special meaning.

That's why I ended up with an Omega.

I have a CPM S110V Strider SNG that I used to other day to cut some semi-malleable plastic material and it took a little chip out of the edge somehow and now I wish I hadn't of used that particular knife and also feel disappointed in the performance of it at the edge angle I have it at long story short I liked the knife better before I used it on that particular day. Though it is a wicked knife that sees some use

I know we're going way off topic, but is there a watch these days that anyone would view in the same light as Rolex watches used to be before they made the move to luxury piece? Im asking anyone to give their thoughts but know you've been a Rolex fan and wearer since I can remember reading your posts for years.

Seiko MM 300 or perhaps something from Oris?

Just wondering what others think?

Back on topic, here's a $1300 custom that gets hard use. Still functional.

MM300 is a good watch on its own. Oris is a different thing, many steps down the ladder. There are a lot of brands that use the ETA 2824 movement. Certainly it is a good movement but not in the class of the Rolex or Omega or Seiko MM 300. It is like any knifemaker putting S30V blade steel in their knife and trying to market it as a top quality knife. While an S30V Blur might be a good knife, it isn't in the same class as a PM2 with S30V steel, which isn't in the same class as some knives with S110V steel.

Little late to the party but I wonder how custom knives turned into Rolex watches. There is no comparison in my opinion. I own two Rolex, and with a quick refurb they are as good as new and if you wait a few years you'll get your money back. If you use a custom knife your not going to get your money back. So, use em and enjoy them or If they're safe queens look at em and love them

Sounds like a Sebenza:D I've got one from 1997 that I had refurbished, and its worth twice as much as I paid.

Same with some Customs. Yes, you can use them and still get your money back, or more. Hard to get from many of those makers, but if you go to Blade you have a decent chance.

Watches. I'm still wearing my early 80's Citizen WindSurfer that I paid about $135 for back then. Wore a Seiko for a few years, but put it up about ten years ago. Been offered twice what I paid for the Windsurfer, but no way I'll ever sell it. Tried many that cost more, but none that I like as much. Sorry for going OT.

Every knife I have is a user. Now, since they are mine, and I have more than I actually need, I can segregate them into usability groups, like hard use and light use. When I use the knives they are rarely outside its capability.

I have two customs, both fixed blades from the same maker. They are made to use hard. I bought them specifically to use hard. I know if they get wrecked I can send them back to the maker and he'd fix them up for me. With that "safety net" I don't really have any other excuse of ownership but to use them as intended.
Having said that, I'm a bit more fearful about my folders. I have no custom folders, and likely never will. Custom folders are just too expensive these days, have so many small parts and tolerances are so precise, that to mess it up would just be so.....demoralizing. I want to stay away from that. Last thing I want to utter from my mouth about messing up an expensive folder is, "dang, I screwed it up."
