Hello

I'm looking for an High-End survival knife, made from an highend steel.
A type of steel which will be as strong as possible, resistant to bending, holding its edge.
Any suggestions?

thanks for the help
Ray

i'm assuming you mean a fixed blade? i'd say go with A2 as far as steel, takes an edge easily, holds it well, and is pretty impact resistant. any of the med. to large bark river knives would be a good choice. if you are looking for something extremely tough, Busse might be something to look at if you have a few hundred to spend.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Ray.

Do a search on "survival" and you're sure to find more than enough info to fil an entire weekend of reading.

There are both production and custom knives that would fit the bill. But you'll probably need to add some specifics as to what you're looking for.

rayback,

The Busse Fusion Basttle Mistress if you want a true hacker, take anything knife. General Sam Houston carried a simular one himself. It's at the San Jacinto monument museum.

Sam Houston carried a Busse:confused:

I'm sure he meant similar blade style, i.e. a bowie style of blade, that has an upward curvature, one sharpened edge, etc....

I'll second the vote for Busse. If I had to bet my life on one knife it would be any medium to large Busse. Next down would be a Swamp Rat. (I've also heard good things about Fehrmans, but haven't tried one -yet)

With that said- if I wasn't limited to just one, I would have a smaller Bark River to go with it. Right now they are actually my favorite knife for everyday use- beautifully made, feel good in my hand, amazingly sharp out of the box and easy to keep that way.

Thanks for the clarification ER. Not unless Jerry is Jerry Busse lll or lV. If there was a Busse around then, I'm sure Sam would of had one.

Look into:

Busse
Swamp Rat
Bark River
Bob Dozier
Tom Krein
Charles May
Gene Ingram
Trident
Ferhman
Ranger

These knives vary a lot, but I am not sure what you mean by a "survival knife". All of these makers make very tough knives that can (and do) serve as general outdoor knives.

Of the listed, my favorite by far is Bob Dozier, but I would go with Busse if heavy chopping and prying is more important than cutting and ergonomics.

As far as survival/rugged use knives go Chris Reeve's fixed blades are never a bad choice.

Speaking of Sam Houston's knife - A few years back the San Jacinto Museum put a few artifacts up for auction including Sam Houston's Bowie Style Knife. An anonymous Texas buyer who bought the knife said "Houston's knife will never leave Texas while I'm alive and it better not leave after I'm dead". Thanks to a concerned Texan this historical knife is still on display at the San Jacinto Museum for all to view.

You might consider Doug Ritter's new RSK Mk3 fixed blade knife for $165. S30V steel, G10 handle, 4.5" long blade, 0.14" thick, 5.7 oz. A great knife in the tradition of the now famous "Rittergrip".

1) The longer it holds an edge, the harder it will be to sharpen
2) The more resistant to bending the more likely to break
3) The sharper it is the more fragile the edge

Knives are a trade off between various potential results. The best knife will depend on where you plan to survive, what other tools you expect to have with you, whether you will be moving or stationary, and for how long will you plan to survive.

Take a look at the Trident Custom Knives, www.tridentknives.com They are made from heavy S30V and triple tempered.

Also look at the Fehrman Knives, www.fehrmanknives.com The are made of CPM 3V and extremly tough and super sharp....Trident comes super sharp too.

The Chris Reeve Green Beret knives in 5.5" or 7" blade, or the Neil Roberts Warrior knives which have about a 6" blade without serrations. The G.B. knives are partially serrated.

I have all of the above makers knives and they are all very tough and strong and will save your ass when a blade is needed.
