High End survival knife

I was looking at a HK-21 13 1/2 " survival knive with compass and other things in the handle on Ebay. Cheap price. Does anyone know anything about the quality of these.

You've got some great suggestions for a high-end knife, Rayback.
You can't go wrong with any of the knives mentioned.
My two cents worth is to check out Relentless Knives. Dan Certo makes solid, no-nonsense, well made knives. And he makes them in 5160, CMP s30v, and sometimes in 440c steels. Worth checking out.

Lots of great knives have been mentioned all of which would serve well ,but dont forget to look at the Randall Made Knives line of offerings. Just My .02

As not2sharp indicated, you have to understand the characteristics of a knife to make a decision like this.

You also need to take the environment you will use it in into account. For a tropical area, a machete is ideal, but it would be useless in a desert. Most of the responses you got would be best in a northern hardwood forest.

Specifics of what you consider survival would help, also. What did you intend to use it for -- chopping, processing game, constructing shelter? You might want very different size knives for each of these.

Hello

I'm looking for an High-End survival knife, made from an highend steel.
A type of steel which will be as strong as possible, resistant to bending, holding its edge.
Any suggestions?

thanks for the help

A good review of the goloks: http://outdoors-magazine.com/s_article.php?id_article=78

May not be what comes to mind when you think of a High-End survival knife - but that's exactly what it is. I don't know where else you can get a full convex grind, differentially tempered large blade with a comfortable handle that will allow you to chop for hours. Simply put, they rock!!

Resistance to snapping may be more important in a survival knife than resistance to bending! Providing once the pressure is off it returns to straight that is!!!!!!
Take a look at the Lofty wiseman knife,It can be seen on www.heinnie.com .

Can a D2 tool steel knife survive a lock breaking without snapping?
Let's say a lock like this:

and breaking it with momentum force?

pit man, Go to this link and when you get there scroll all the way down the page to the thumbnail pictures and click on the one with the Fehrman knives and you will see some real bending attempts.

There are some pics of Swamp Rats testing in this thread. Sorry for the missing pics, I just realized that I'd lost some of my links a couple of days ago and I haven't fixed them yet. I hope you get the idea though http://www.swampratknifeworks.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=10;t=002109#000000

You also need to check out this thread for some serious abuse of the Busse AK47 http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=420982&highlight=testing

Good luck on your choice

Right there you've ruled out stainless steels.
.... resistant to bending, holding its edge.....
You said high-end, so I'd say Busse it is. Check out the forum here on BFC and the way they warranty their knives. Busses are built to survive, and perform well while doing it.

how high? end ???
