High quality, reasonable cost knives from Russia, China, etc.

I have three WE Knives they are very good but not quite to the level of Reate, I do like the extra colour and detail they add which is certainly worth considering. The RealSteel S571 Pro is probably the best higher end Chinese knife I've handled.

Thats a very plain knife, its cost is low because of that. after watching some of your videos on this (in the past few months) i think ill eventually get one of these, if i find one used here on BF's.

I'd be interested to find out what other mid / low level Russian knives are out there other than kizlyar. I haven't come across any in my travels. Be interesting to see if there was a knife company that was akin to vostok when it comes to watches.

I've owned several Kizer Cutlery (China) and Kizlyar Supreme (Russia), and have found the quality to be very high, and consistent across different models.

Only complaint has been not enough folders with pocket clips reversible for us southpaws.

The thing to keep in mind is that even the best run production makers can let a bad sample through. Just this year I had the misfortune of receiving a CRK Umnumzaan with very poor blade centering, as well as a Reate Horizon-D with noticeably asymmetric plunge grinds. The 'zaan was relegated to beater blade duty and the Reate was returned to the seller. It just goes to show that nobody, however good his reputation, gets it right all the time.

Why not send the Zaan back to be made right? Relegating a $400 knife to "beater" status doesn't make sense. CRK certainly has a reputation for making things right.

IRT Hackenslash,

I just chalked the experience up to "live and learn." (Though it did cause me to ponder a bit about the saying, "Measure twice, cut once.") And in any case, where i work, I really did need a decent blade to scrape stuff like hardened chewing gum off the floor.

well, CKF has ties with Kevin John, not Reate. also you would have to do more than compare only a PAIR of knives to say which is better manufacture than the other, so thats not really any truth in what you say in that perspective, just those two models. if you were to put Reate's Todd begg bodega steel craft up against something else, it would be very hard to say the reate wasnt better. just saying.

also...

I have four Reate's including 1 steel craft and the 606 we I have is as well finished and smooth as any of them.
Also, there is a thread on here where reate parts being supplied to ckf is discussed, I was just going of this.
The thread may be wrong, just as your assumption that I was only comparing 2 knives, but from your few posts on here it would seem as though you are pretty quick to start stuff with out much to actually back it up.

Russ

whos starting something?

they may also be getting stuff from reate? times change you know. they started out with kevin john as the quote i posted. can you link me to this thread where they are getting parts from reate? id love to read it. my reate knives are great, and i like we knives also. im actually getting a VDK Pioneer of the nile which is made by we knives, as soon as they are finished building the first batch. i dont think you can go wrong with reate or we knives, or CKF.

Colt, Marbles, Rough Rider for traditional slip joints. Quality, fit n finish well beyond their price point.
I have no experience with their modern knives, so cannot comment on them.
The BUCK 37X and 38X series are also quite good, and have Buck's "Forever" guarantee.

For modern liner/frame locks, I've used M-Tech and Tac-Tech to open cans of food (yes, I know, knife abuse) with no damage to the blade or lock.

Maxace is a division of stedmon and i just received a new model called the Cicada.
Knife has got a 3.75" satin M390 THICK bladestock and runs on multirow ceramic bearings and detent ball. It also has steel lockbar insert and overtravel stop.
The Ti frame has a ton of machine work and also has a 3d clip. The action is out of this world, blade fires like a rocket.
It's the smoothest knife i have owned and I've owned at least a half dozen different Shiros and had Andre Thorburn build me a couple knives and this thing blows them all away for action and smoothness.

All for 250.00.... best money i ever spent on a knife! I'll have to get some pics and post them.

GPKnives has a few Reate models on sale for Thanksgiving. Pretty good deals I'd say.
