higo traditional japanese knives

I picked up a few of these on amazon. I have the medium and extra small I believe. It took me forever to sharpen the medium. Since it has that scandi type grind I wanted to make sure that the entire secondary bevel was flat. It took ages on an extra course dmt stone. Once I got the burr all the way down the edge I took it up to 12000 grit and it's pretty much a straight razor in terms of performance.

When I tried the same on the tiny one, I was getting really bad carbide tear out or something. Lots of tiny little serrations on the edge. You should have seen my face when I tried to slice newspaper with it after spending all that time on the stones. Could not get a sharp edge on that thing so I destroyed the edge on purpose \until I removed all the tear out and tried again. This time I was able to get it sharp with no noticeable tear out but the grind is very triangular and doesn't slice all that great due to the geometry. Maybe the heat treat on the small was a dud. Anyway cool little knives. Mine are hitachi blue steel and I can attest to how much of a pain it is to re profile. They are supposedly hand forged so the blade will not be totally flat. All my stones are flat and I use a truely flat granite plate I got from woodcraft and after an hour of sharpening, only the middle part of the blade had steel missing from it. Took ages to get to the very tip.

I have always been intrigued by the design and blade shape of these. I just pulled the trigger on a medium brass. I was really hoping to find a large, too.

lmk when you^ get your knife.
There is something very special about these classic folders. I have carried mine since it arrived.
