Higonokami cheapo.

I will see what I can do when I get it. I liked the looks of almost all of the Higo style knives from that brand, so I would not be surprised if I wound up with more of them. I especially liked the wooden handled models. This one just sounded kind of fun, and pushed my "let's do something crazy" button at the right time

They are the best priced ti framelocks i know on the market right now. Quality is outstanding.

I have the one on the right.

All this talk of higo style knives makes me think of a custom maker from Japan that makes reasonably priced customs. I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the maker. They are widely sold on bladehq and knifecenter. Can someone point me in the right direction.

EDIT: I remember now. Hiroaki Ohta was his name.

are you thinking of Ohta?

What is your impression of the Mercator - pics?

I like the Mercator, I just don't carry it as much as the Higo because it's a little bigger and weighs more. I would carry the Mercator if I knew I'd need more knife or a locking knife. I also added a Kiwk thumb stud, I can now open it one handed. It's a little big, but it's worth it IMO.

Good comparison pic.
Yes, the Higo seems a more manageable size.

"My knife has hydralic opening, IKBS, phospherous bronze washers AND ceramic ball bearings!"

"PFFHH please, my HIGO has a butterfly on the blade."

Okay, so its not my knife. I dont know whats going on with that one.

The handle can be considered nice but the butterfly on the blade is just : ???? Defeats the whole purpose of the knife, IMO. This could be used to demonstrate how a knife doesn't need too much poetry...

I like the (unadorned) Higo brass handles but they can keep the butterfly.
There are other equally odd examples.

Keep in mind one of the original uses for the higonokami was to be issued to school kids in Japan to sharpen pencils. Now imagine a young girl with the butterfly - makes more sense, right? I have one of the authentic higonokami's from the last remaining factory in Japan, which I purchased on my last trip to Japan. There are a lot of cheap fakes/copies out there now, even if they are made in Japan.
