i think they are ignoring me?

Really? When you say you will start an argument? It's Sunday evening, and although I would gladly engage you in an argument any other time, I reserve my Sundays for offering contradictions.

I would imagine you wouldn't be argumentative if you posted your response a little differently. You get more flies with honey than vinegar! But you are always welcome to contradict me if you wish!

iam fairly new here, but i am going to go ahead and start an arguement ,

If there is an argument to be started it will be about your not using proper punctuation, spelling, grammar or capital letters. That really pisses people off. I'm sure others will agree.

,busses infi sucks at cutting flesh,

There is a couple of things I am a little confused about, where can I find lion, bears, elk, and deer all in the same place . I can think of a couple of locations where 3 out of the 4 exist together but I can't think of a place for all 4, (not saying that it doesn't exist I'm just curious). Also are seriously retarded/ballsy enough to approach a wounded buck and try killing it with a knife? I have heard of it being done, but the dude I meet retarded enough to try it still has a scar from the deer. I am fairly confident that no one is retarded/ballsy/drunk enough to try and kill a lion or bear with a knife, heck if Chuck Norris would think twice. Last but not least if you can't cut flesh with an object, than that object is dull, it doesn't really matter what the object is made out of.

A Zoo? Having all of these animals in close proximity and unable to escape would make for some quick and easy killin. You could bag all 4 in just a few minutes.

Or in your own little personal fantasy world, then all sorts of derring-do could ensue. :D

Hey, I've probably taken nearly a thousand folks on paid trips to shoot wild animals - everything from bobcats to tigers, koalas to grizzlies, gazelles to water buffalo, and elephants, rhino, hippos to bison. Thousands of shots taken - most folks weren't great 'shooters'. Never needed to present my knife - a SAK - except to trim camera straps/open lunch drinks. We shot mainly Ektachrome. I taught a college level photo class for years... the zoo was always a fun trip.

Now, several additional field trips to secluded waterfalls were offered - and I got pretty adept at spotting - and avoiding - Alabama's real woods problems - copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlers. The rattlesnakes can generally be detected by smell - rotten/death smell. Cottonmouths are everywhere in/near the water. Wear high leather boots and you pobably won't have to worry about stepping on a copperhead, either. I've never needed more than a walking stick - and that SAK to make one - in many years of woods hikes. That has changed recently.

Cats and black bears in the SE leave you alone if you make noise - and don't approach them. Two legged predators are another story. I now carry either a S&W 296, a 5-shot .44 Special AirLite, or a 642, a smaller version in .38 Special - with ammo suitable for thinned skinned predators. The areas where wild boars are starting to gain in numbers are getting more in number, too. Noise seems to attract them - and they can seriously gore your legs, being a bit belicose in nature.

I camped for years with a SAK or Buck 301 Stockman - and a KaBar - the latter may just be that last ditch protection you need, if you can't have a firearm. Alabama has a reciprocity relationship with most states in the SE, so my CCL is valid there, too. And... Federal Parks may now permit them... Many folks carry there these days, legal or not - mostly for 2-legged protection.

Stainz

PS That KaBar, aka 'Fighting Knife', is a real suggestion. I prefer the old CS 1095, but some love the new D2 variants - the nylon sheaths may help, too.

I have all in my neighborhood, although bears are sleeping this time of year. I live in the Rocky mtns. in Colorado, altitude about 10K.

Cats like an easy kill. fighting back is good. Roll right away if the cat is on your back. They will jump off rather than get tangled up under you.

We did a few hour hike yesterday. I carried pepper spray, a Military S90V (like Elkpro's) and a Temperance2 proto.

The Temperance and the Temperance2 were designed for such a scenario. Easy penetration and slashing capabilities, but as mentioned, penetration is the key.

I often carry a pair of these guys :). Razor sharp pick, good swing geometry; mountain goats beware.

I'm betting it'd be more effective than a knife, simply because of the reach. Not that I plan on sticking into anything other than ice.

Lion's, tigers, and bears..oh my..
I've been using a BK&T brute or a Kershaw D2 tactical,
reminds me of a story a guide on Kodiak told us when we asked if a .44 mag was ok,
his response was sure, just file off the front sight, hurts less when the bear stuffs it up your nose. He carries a benelli auto filled with slugs, and a custom bowie 16" blade, 3" wide and .25" thick, he said he would still die using the blade, but the critter was going to bleed... G.

Yeah ive heard that story before only it wasant going into the nose if you cathc my drift

elkpro1 = infi sucks at cutting flesh

Uh-oh this could get ugly........

I live in cat country -- seven miles from the nearest powerline. I've been face-to-face with a cougar. I didn't have to fight him, but I had to get 10 to 15 feet away to get between him and my puppy. He looked as big as a horse. I can tell you straight out, when you're in that situation, you'll know for absolute sure that a knife isn't a great idea. I stayed alive because I knew how to behave.

Lacking a gun, bear spray is best. Second is an air horn, as has been mentioned. All of those are effective tools to prevent a cougar attack that put the odds in your favor. Not a knife. Proper posture and behavioral response is a LOT better than a folder.

If you want to buy a knife to wave around and feel safe, do it. If you want to protect yourself from a cougar, get some education.

We had a cougar sighting in a national park close by. (cougars are not supposed to be around here) The wardens called me in to verify it was a cougar. I tracked it for a day and gave up when it went WAY out of the park boundry. It was hit by a car several weeks later. When I saw the pics my stomach dropped as i was tracking it without a partner. I had never seen one upclose and wasn't prepared for it hunting me. A foolish endevor that thankfully ended well. I carry pepper spray but with my nose to the ground and bent over... that cat would have taken me for sure.

Lesson learned no harm no foul.

i couldnt track anytihng other than a human and even that rather poorly compared to some i know. so your already leg up on most people in temrs of practical knowledge and application:D

:D Thanks Sal, in the Appalachian mountains where I live we have all but elk and I couldn't think of a place that would support all 4. Also why not the military in S120V :D.

Hi Paintballer,

I must confess that I don't carry my CPM-125V Military very much. Not too many around.
