I had a friend who was able to take a big brown on Kodiak Island years ago. He said the guides set speed records skinning out his bear and taking the meat they wanted, as they were leaving they saw 4 bears moving in, the bears think a gunshot is a dinner bell there.
Bears, wolves, and other critters large enough to kill a man will normally attack out of fear or hunger. Big cats on the other hand are the only animals other than man that kill just for fun. It is thought they will often stalk but not attack for fun as well. Unless you startle a big cat it is unlikely you will have much warning at all. In Africa it is thought that sacrificing an arm...ie feeding it to the cat...might buy you enough time bring a weapon into play. Of course during this, the cat will being doing it's level best to disembowel you. I know that folks are recommending huge guns but at this point it will likely be a contact wound and the amount of gases that come out of a smaller revolver like a .357 will do a good job. As a firearm is out of the question for you I would have to say pepper spray is your best bet, if you can bring it into play it will likely create distance faster than anything else and that is what you want...distance.
