These were taken at Starved Rock State Park near Ottawa, Illinois. I just wanted to try out the camera...

Not what you'd expect from Illinois, huh?

Great you got a new camera. I wish you would of checked with us first. We could have clued you in on some brand new technology. Its called Color photography. LOL

Seriously thanks for sharing your picts.

I haven't been to Starved Rock in years, and never in winter. That frozen waterfall picture is interesting.

Unfortunately, there's some more beauty missing in color... those rocks are usually pinkish red. Very visually stunning.

But don't let the lack of color disappoint: those shots are great!

I think we're heading back there this year or next (I forget... Mrs. Watchful plans most of the trips for the little Watchfuls; I merely get to decide what to bring).

Wow that is beautiful! Great shots, I like the B&W, it's dramatic. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool pics. Brrr. Glad thats not here.

Nice pics!! I was just there on Tuesday!! It's nice to have a little gem like that in Illinois where the corn fields and flatland can drive you crazy. It would be great to be able to camp in the canyons!

Great pics bro, I actually prefer seeing them in black and white sometimes as it makes them look more dramatic !
The 3rd pic is awesome !!!

THANKS FOR POSTING.

was raised in Chicago and went there several times..

Thanks for the ride down memory lane!!!!

Nice, I like the B&W, btw anyone who thinks that's cold check out my new thread;)
These hiking threads are great therapy for me, it reminds me there are trees and stuff out there waiting for me.

I have been planning to go soon. your picks are making me go sooner than later. Hope I can get out there between the cold fronts ! Nice pix

Awesome pictures. The B&W is perfect for winter where the colours tend to get sapped out by all that snow.

Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful pictures, they're going to make great backgrounds for the work computer.

Great use of B&W, btw... keep us updated throughout the year, ok?

Nice pictures. I used to live near there (Brother had his wedding reception at the State Park lodge). The late fall and winter are definitely the best times to visit - no bugs, no crowds, no poison ivy, and no steaming heat.

There are some other nice parks in Northern Illinois too - being able to enjoy them is all about timing. Franklin Creek, the canals, Mathessen, Mississippi Palasades, Apple River...

But if you scew up and try to visit any of those places on a busy summer weekend, you'll wish you were at the shopping mall instead. :(

Not what you'd expect from Illinois, huh?

Actually, just not what I'd expect from Northern Illinois. I've been to The Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois a few times. There are some great cliffs and rock formations there at Garden Of The Gods.

Nice pics. I like the black and white.
