Hinderer Half Track Issues...

Hey all,
Mr. Hinderer replied to my inquiry personally which I really appreciated. Below is an excerpt from what he said. He offered to look at it but the seller offered to let me return it so that’s the route I’m going. It’s just more than I want to deal with.

“...in fact the way the knife is designed with the internal stop pin being both the locking point and the stop pin on the closing point and with the internal tracks milled into both the lockside and the liner side it is actually impossible for it to be doing that unless it was altered...“

He also said that it might be possible that Eklipse standoffs were installed on it which could cause the issue.

Returning the knife to the seller sounds like the best option with all of the issues it seems to have.

The wrong stand off installed would seem like it makes a lot of sense.

As long is its not altered thats the beauty of a warranty

Wrong standoffs can cause the blade to move in the closed position when pressed? Sounds pure speculation to me.

My guess is that the Eklispe pillars are larger in diameter than those on the Half Track so they would be closer to the blade when closed.

Correct, but I think SE was saying that wouldn't allow for "movement" on a closed blade.

Agreed.
What seems strange to me about this is that I would think a little thickness would be added to the surface of an anodized material if there was any change at all ( whitty whitty can you offer any insight into this?). That would mean the blade should actually not travel as far into the handle when closed since the stop pins engage the milled slots in the titanium handles, assuming no other alterations were made. I actually talked to the person who anodized it as well. He stated that he makes no other alterations. I can see worn areas through the anodizing in the milled slots where the stop pins would engage when closed. Is it possible that the titanium has simply worn down in that area thus allowing this movement?

Of course all this is speculative based on observable symptoms. Without sending it to Hinderer or at least disassembling the knife it’s impossible to know exactly what’s going on.

To me what this really means this that sellers need to get more serious about accurately examining and describing the items they have for sale. That’s a topic for another thread which I plan on starting soon. My rate of duds has increased disturbingly on eBay, USN (lots of issues), and even here.

Right.

The problem here is the blade won't stay in one place when closed, which makes me to suspect it is one or more of the following three possibilities (1) the detent hole is too large (or the detent ball is too small), (2) the stop pin is too small or not in the correst position, and (3) the hole on the blade tang is too big (or the pivot tube is too small).

If anything, an oversized standoff should prevent the blade from any wiggling movement.

I got a refund on the Half Track and replaced it with a new one. I was going to get one that matched my MP-1 (bronze anodized, black G10, stonewashed blade) but just before I pulled the trigger I spotted this one on Monkey Edge. I like the color combo and working finish on the blade. So far I don't see any issues like I had with the other one. I also snagged an XM-18 3" Wharncliffe in trade. The Half Track and XM-18 both got copper stabilizers and brass stand-offs.

Congrats Photoman on the new Half Track. Give it a chance it might knock that Inkosi out of your pocket some. Regardless both are great knives.

A problem I have with all of these Hinderers is that the pocket clips are too tight and pant material seems it hang up on the lockbar stabilizer. It seems like it will quickly shred pockets. I tried bending the XM-18’s clip some but it is really stiff. I think I need a vise.

Hello everyone!

So I just recently picked up a new Half Track from Whitty and so far I love the knife. But there is a problem with mine that came out of nowhere. I noticed the action became gritty and was tough to flip all of a sudden. Then I noticed the stop pin was protruding out of one side of the blade way more then the other. Turns out the stop pin has shifted to one side so much that it was scraping the Ti, it even made a groove in it. To be honest I'm a bit disappointed but love everything about the knife.

I managed to move the blade to the point where the stop pin sticks out of the scales and was able to push the pin back to the other side with the plastic end of my screw driver. It didn't move much but enough so that is isn't scraping the Ti anymore. Now the action is buttery smooth again.

I'm not sure if I should exchange it for another one, send it to Rick or just deal with it. I literally just received it on 7/3/18

Don’t just deal with it. I would start with Whitty.

I'd send it back without question.

Mine has space too and that is why I am dumbfounded. There is a nic in the post where the blade is chipped so it clearly hit there. I don’t get it. Honestly, crap like this makes me want to just carry and own cheap pieces of crap and if this stuff happens just throw it out and buy another. Could do that 10x for the price of one of these expensive knives. Ugh.

But sorry for deflecting the thread. Just frustrated.
I pulled my wallet out of my pocket and it snagged the clip on my $500 Medford SM Marauder launching it our of my pocket. It hit the concrete hard on the back, popping the knife open and locked, bounced and landed hard again right on the edge, causing several significant dents.

It's okay though because I sharpened them out when I got home and the little dings on the back of the handle are barely noticeable and no big deal.

It sucks that your knife has a ding in the edge. I get it. Still, you will have more joy and peace of mind if you invest in something like a humble Lansky and learn to sharpen and reprofile your knives. It's a great skill, extends your mileage, protects you from issues like this one, and allows you to customize your edge angle.

If you already do that, then I apologize. It just seems like a small thing to be upset about if you have the tools and ability to fix it.

So I just wanna post letting everyone know that usamadeblade aka Whitty & company are unmatched in customer service. He's helping me take care of the faulty stop pin issue and then some! This is a rare occurrence which should not have left the ranch that way, but shit happens and we do not live in a perfect world. Anyway I'm looking forward to getting the knife back in perfect condition! It's become my favorite knife in my collection.
