I just purchased a brand new Hinderer xm-18 3.5, and I can't tell if my lock up is normal or abnormal (late) for a new hinderer. Pics below, let me know what you think. Thanks!

Looks normal to me. The more you open it, the percentage of lockup will increase. Use it. Enjoy it. They are a very nice knife.

Later than mine and a lot I've handled or seen, but definitely still early. I'd prefer your lockup over mine.

I think a lot of people would call that perfect, if there is such a thing. Frankly, I might be worried if the lock up were much earlier.

Looks great to me! Congrats on getting an awesome knife!

I have a little used one that's much later. Mine's about 75%. I contacted the ranch because my other two are 25% our less. Rob did not seem concerned at all and it hasn't changed any more. I did have some bad lock stick but that sorted itself out after using some.

For once it looks like a safe new hinderer. I mean thats the best I have seen. The last 4-5 I have seen in person. Were locked up by a thread.

Rick has great geometry so I like to see 25%+

Good to go! Mine sits about 30-40%, which is where I like it. Personally, I don't like the super early lockup so many new XMs exhibit.

Is there any tips on how to make a late lockup early? My Direware solo is about 80% lockup and that does not concern me much on the life time but the aesthetics of the lock side (the lock bar sink too much to the frame)

So from 11/17/15 to 1/6/16 the lock went from 55% to 80% lockup?

I have recently acquired a early version of Direware Solo....But the lockup is late (around 55%) and SUPER ROCK HARD to disengage. Sometimes even using two hands the lock bar could not be easily bent back.

Sounds like you got a bad knife.

LoL you dig deep! Long story short I had it serviced by Eric to fix that ROCK HARD lock bar. He did adjusted the tension to perfection for me but the lock position is later than before... And you know the knife makers do not offer the "bring the early lockup back" service often.

I was thinking since the carbidization (probably wrong word) will protect the lock face and add a little layer of new material to it. Can I do that (say extra thick carbidization) to help the late lockup?
