Hinderer MP-1

Right, but Hinderers aren't bearing flippers, they are designed to be opened by thumbstud, inertia or flipper. The video I posted in this thread was made by my dad, after a member said it was impossible for a knife to open all 3 ways.

Nice vid, thanks for posting. Just managed to open it via inertia but was pretty cack-handed. No joy at all with the thumb stud other than with two hands.

I bought a new XM-18 3.5, when I received it it flipped like shit. It was two things, it needed a break in, and I needed to learn the trick to properly flip this knife. You need to preload it, it feels weird at first but after a bit of practice it's a breeze. Now that it's broken in and I've learned the trick it flips like a dream every single time. As for the price it's relative to the XM-18 as they cost $425.00 + 200.00 for the ti scale = $625.00. I agree the modular back spacer thing is not necessary. I would like to see this knife come in at $600.00 not $695.00 and he can keep that "modular back spacer"... I'm more interested in the Eklipse, I don't ever see them for sale. I don't get it he just keeps making heaps of the XM-18 3.5 Skinner, Bowie, and Spanto's. The market is flooded with those knives with no Eklipse's in sight!

They did Eklipse's in a small run a few months ago. Everyone sold out of them in minutes. The Bowies and Skinners are done for a long while so what is out their at dealers right now will be the last of them for a very very long time. Spanto's are hard to find again as most dealers are out of them.

As for the modular back spacer system. There will be a lot more to come with this system. It just came out so have a little faith. I think in time a lot of people will be impressed.

I loved my first Hinderer XMs -- 3 and 3.5 inches -- but was less than impressed at first with the flipping.

Then I broke them in, learned to put my finger where the jimping is, and do the pre-loading.

After that, I loved the way they flip.

My MP-1 was different.

Out of the box and without any break-in, it was perfect.

Flipped great.

Opens smoothly with the thumb studs.

Even flicks easily.

Until now, my Chris Reeve knives had the best tolerances of any of my folders.

Now there's a new king: my Ti MP-1.

Would love to see a vid of you opening with the thumb studs and inertia - no joy with either for me, although as per some earlier advice I applied some silicon spray to the pivot earlier and that has made a massive difference to the flipping, along with many hours of practice when I should be working!

Working on this for you!

And I'd wager you could take the op's knife and do the same with it.

I would like to hope so but honestly no guarantee. Every company makes a dud from time to time. This was just a way for the OP to maybe judge what his knife is or is not doing. You honestly never know.

The reason I say that, is because it does take technique and practice to do what seems simple with one hand opening blades. I'm amazed at how many of my co-workers think mine are "switchblades" and can't come close to opening mine with one hand.

I KNOW why you said that, It does take a particular technique to flip a Hinderer.

Good point!

You wrote exactly what I was going to say except I only had an XM-18 3.5" no 3". My Chris Reeve Knives are perfect in every way and now my Hinderer MP-1 is in the same class, I absolutely love everything about it especially how easy it flips.

Hope the OP gets to enjoy his as well with a little more practice/wearing in, if not his knife is probably a dud. Hope it works out for you OP :)

I got to play with an MP-1 at our local shop and have got to say it is on my short list. Unreal smooth flipper

Thanks for all the input, much appreciate your comments etc. It's flipping beautifully now (worn in/silicon spray/technique) and got the inertia opening locked down too. Still no joy with the thumb studs but overall, good enough - it's a keeper!

Just returned a ZT0900 and ZT0450 - OK knives but a bit bland. Now considering a reinvestment of funds and putting an order in for a Rockstead Hizen... Thought about a Sai but that's a lot of cash.

With the thumbstud try pushing up towards where the blade would be when opened instead of pushing out. Also make sure your hand is not putting pressure on the lockbar side. Glad to hear if has gotten better.

I own an MP-1. Right out of the box it did indeed....flip like rubbish. I expected this though as Hinderer has more or less been shunned for his poor flipping performance. I took the necessary steps (an easy process really) to make it flip like it's designed to.

The knife runs on nylon washers so lubrication is going to be your best friend. What I found with different washer pivots is a very lightweight oil is essential. I used a single drop of nano oil on each side of the pivot. Then I turned the pivot a tiny, tiny bit to the left to loosen it. In short, she's a splendid flipper now. Better than various bearing pivot knives and on par, or maybe better than, my Shirogorov Hati. The deployment is one of the smoothest I've felt, too.

Here's a link to a quick video of flipping action I did for a buddy: https://youtu.be/AxUN8zQz9ME

This knife'll flip!. Much, much better than any XM will--well, in my experience anyways. Just tinker and tweak it. It will come together.

As far as launching off the studs, just be sure your fingers are clear of the lockbar. The lightest amount of pressure will render deployment nearly impossible.

Great tips guys - got the thumb stud technique nailed now. Not an intuitive way of working it but once you get the hang of it, flies open. Actually very useful for LH opening I'm finding.

Out of interest, do you use loctite (or similar) on the pivot screw, as it seems to move around a hell of a lot and I'm tightening often with my thumbnail?
