mulling a purchase but $500+ seems steep. Striders are in the same boat.

should i just stick with zero tolerance,buck,etc... ?

Paying $500+ for a $384 knife......

They are nice, but not worth more than Rick's price.

I can tell you I wouldn't pay more than the orginal price for one you can bet on that.

At Rick's price, yes. With a markup of $200-300 like you see on the secondary market, no.

where is the best place to buy them?
Directly from Rick, but he's not currently taking orders due to a massive backlog. But if you're willing to pay $625-675 for one, they regularly show up on the Exchange here for that amount.

oh... that blows.

I bought one last year at $500 from a dealer - that was tough knowing Rick's price.

In the last week I've had an opportunity to buy from dealers and they were about $650-$750. I just couldn't do it.

I had an XM-18 on a pass-around and heartily concur. You can click on "My Knife Reviews" under my name and see the review with a number of photo comparisons.

Yes, a Hinderer IS very much worth the price. Rick makes amazing knives.

^^^ This. ...(ETA) If you are looking for something nearer to Rick's actual price, check his dealers list on his site and get on their list. Time or money...one of these you will pay if you want his folder(s).

I understand it is a lot of money but I will tell you this is an incredible knife. I own both and would not put the Strider in the same class as the Hinderer. You would buy the Hinderer and understand why you spent that money. I can only say the same about two other custom folders I own. That would be RJ Martin and Darrel Ralph. And I own many, many customs. Andres Devillier is also in that class. Ok I have to add Larry Chew, Mr Pat Crawford and Allen Ellishewitz to the discussion just sayin.

Interesting.

You need to know that the XM-18 is one HELL of a knife. I would buy one at $600 over a strider at $300 any day. Better knife design, better fit and finish, and Rick's lockbar stabilizer is actually licensed by Strider for their knives.

The XM-18 is a highly desireable knife made in much lower quantities than Strider or ZT knives. Getting one from Rick is difficult unless you're a first responder or military. He can't make enough of them to satisfy his customers. THAT is why they demand a high premium on the secondary.

At table price the Gen III is the best knife buy on the market. At $600 it's still a good buy.
