Hinderer worth the price

^^^ This. ...(ETA) If you are looking for something nearer to Rick's actual price, check his dealers list on his site and get on their list. Time or money...one of these you will pay if you want his folder(s).

Exactly...

Get on a list and pay close to Rick's price...

Any more than that and you got riped off.

You could get a nice Custom made for those inflated prices they are going for and really have something.

How are you gonna say that someone is getting ripped off if they're paying a price they're comfortable with for the quality of the knife?

Maybe it would be better to say that if a person can get one at table price it's a much better deal. I've payed more for knives that felt much less in terms of quality.

In my opinion, the XM-18 prodo is the Busse of the folder world. I've only owned one knife I thought was tougher, and that was a Marsh Vanquish, which will be coming BACK to me this week.

Say what you like, but the Hinderer is a great knife whether you pay $400 or $700...and I'm not just saying that because I have one up for sale. I'm saying that because I've owned 6 of them and carried one for over a year. Dug holes with it, stuck it into wood, did ALL kinds of things with that knife.

It's nice, but not that nice... ;)

I have had more than one in hand before you even say it....

They are not Limited edition Knives, or available only for a short time etc or the usual things that drive up the prices like Busse.

Yeah $384....

Now let's shed a little more light on this, and be fair... $385 plus shipping or tax is Ricks price direct for the mid tech xm-18 GenIII (either 3" or 3.5")...but if one is not a first responder or military, currently they cannot order directly from Rick (ETA ...and at shows, you have to enter a lottery for a chance to buy one). Rick has a list of dealers, and dealers aren't in the biz if they aren't making anything off sales. The minimum most will add is $50+ shipping... Now we're at $450. If one has the time to wait, getting on a Dealer's list will be the best bargain, if not, the XM-18 is WELL WORTH $500 plus, and the full customs even more.

I have 6 XM's, personally, and each is worth every penny, whether mid-tech or full custom. Some were direct from Rick at BLADE, others from Dealers/private Sellers. Most get carried, 2 are rotated dedicated EDC's for over 4 years...those still feel fantastic, sharp, no blade play, great lockup, etc., just like they did when new.

In my opinion, it doesn't get much better than Rick's folders for EDC, period.

There are way more Busses made every day than XM-18's.

Let me ask you this: why do you think there's such a demand for the knives? Why ARE they selling for as much as they do?

Still not worth more than Rick's price to me no matter how you put it. ;)

And they never will be.

I can understand what people pay the $600 for. They want the knife. Now. Not 6 months to over a year from now. Right this moment.

That's generally what happened with Spyderco's S90V folders. They all got marked up a good $70-$100 on the secondary market. It's really the scarce availability that drives the price up so much.

Ripped off? Really??? I don't think so in the slightest at $500, but I guess that we're all entitled to our opinions...

If I am going to spend that much coin on a folder I will get a Custom made the way want it with the steel I want ect.

By whom? And how long are you going to wait?

Name me a maker with Rick's fit and finish who can make you a knife at that price, the way you want it, and get it to you in under a year.

Good things come to those who wait. :)

its the idea that they are somehow limited.....i personally don't agree with ricks policy to put certain people in front of others as he deems appropriate, but i don't really want to go into that......in my opinion, the knife is worth 400-425 comparing to other knives

We are all entitled to our opinions and can choose to support shower we'd like. I have no problem with Rick's policies, especially considering that he designed it FOR first responders such as himself (a VOLUNTEER firefighter). People also have problems with Jerry's business philosophy. I have problems with neither and am friendly with both men.

Regardless, we're not really talking about value, we're talking about PERCEIVED value. Alex and I will never be able to change anyone's opinions. What it comes down to is this: if you like the design, but it at whatever price you can reasonably afford. If you decide it's not for you, you will get your money back on the sale.

Good luck.

And Jim, I still would challenge you to put the XM next to any custom maker's knife in terms of durability and refinement. It's a heavy duty folding knife. Find me one better at $600.

I've owned: Manaro, Marsh, Burch, Mayo, Emerson, Les George and more, and I've fondled MANY MANY more makers' work at Blade and the Gathering '10. There are plenty great makers out there, but Burch's cheapest folder is at least $550 and you hafta win it in a lottery. The least expensive marsh I've see. On the table was $700. Emerson's customs are $650 on the table and you have to get pulled for them. Anso, George, Manaro, Onion, Marlowe...all of them cost more than $600 and are even tougher to find. They all also cost even MORE on the secondary.

I have one on my desk sitting in front of me that blows it away. ;)

I find it interesting that either knives are even debated if they are worth their creators MSRP..... Strider msrp is more than Hinderer but are not hogged out on the open market so they are more stable on their used market value. There is too many people hogging Hinderers out for way too much money over Ricks msrp. I would never buy a knife for more than their designers set msrp. You wont lose much if any money with either brand (if you buy at msrp) and you decide to flip them... Personally, I much prefer Strider but thats me. Buy what knife that speaks to you and forget everyone elses opinion. Its your money.

Stop bragging about your Demko, jerk! Some of us who just placed orders with Andrew are having a hard enough time waiting as it is. ;)

Well you know. :D

And I have a 2nd one coming soon in CF.
