Hi - I just wanted get this off my chest.

I've been looking for a specific XM-18 combo for a while now, and in the search I basically have seen every XM that's popped up on the various forums in the last while. I am always too late on the combo I am after but I keep at it. I even purchased one from a dealer at retail price but it got refunded due to the seller having a non NYC shipping policy.

Let me say that a seller can sell an item for whatever price they see fit, if I don't like the price I don't have to buy it. Supply and demand, XM's are hard to get, Rick can only make so many, lots of people want one. I get it. I just get annoyed when I see these knives going for seven, eight or even nine hundred dollars sometimes. I am talking about gen III's CNC ground, not any hand ground blades. People seem to be paying this much so who am I to say anything I suppose.

Anyway, it bother's me. I'll get over it, just wanted to say it "out loud".

It bothers me too man. Too many people are willing to rip off their neighbor for ridiculous profits... especially when getting one from Rick costs under 4...

it's supply and demand, don't let it upset you. Emerson customs sell for twice their table prices, Lochsas sell for 3 times the maker's price, hell, even patches sell for $150 or 15 times their original price etc etc

Back to XM18s, I sent a PM to a dealer after being the 1st to view a FS post and I didn't even get a response :p. It's just that hot, even at the high prices you mentioned. Not everyone can get one from Rick directly - note this from the website:

**Please note that all XM folding knife sales are conducted through our authorized dealers, unless you are active Military / Law Enforcement / Fire / EMT / EMS**

Its pretty crazy if you ask me.... I want to get one just so I can see what all the fuss is about! But I wont pay aftermarket prices so I will have to get lucky somehow.

I feel the same way, maybe a bit too strongly. I like to think that Blade Forums is at least a bit of a community (excuse my "soft" drivel) and in many cases it does behave that way. When I sell a knife here, I'm more interested in getting a "fair" price and getting the knife to a person that will value and enjoy it rather than getting maximum profit from "what the market will bear". I'd much prefer to see the sell-for-maximum-profit take place at that auction place. I was lucky enough to buy and XM-18 from another Blade Forum member for what I considered a reasonable and fair price. And yes I know, $800 may seem reasonable and fair to some people, just not me.

Not all people that are selling a XM for hundreds over actual cost are in it for profit. Some paid what the market will bear and are just trying to sell it for what they bought it for.

I have my own opinion about the way Hinderer sells their NIB blades but I will keep this to myself.

Hot stuff always goes up beyond reason. Busse. BM42. In-vogue custom shops.

If it is greed that drives this, it is greed on both ends: without buyers willing to fuel the frenzy, prices would come down.

As long as there are idiots willing to pay those exorbitant prices, there will always be greedy folks anxious to flip a knife they were able to score at MSRP for a quick profit. What I don't get is why this is posted in the G/B/U section, instead of W/C where it belongs...

I wouldn't call them idiots. There are people to whom those prices are well within their discretionary spending limits.
There are households that spend what are considered normal prices on jewelry and firearms that are more than these knives.

Cool. I guess I missed where he actually talked about anybody other than the "secondary market" in general. Sounded like a typical Whine you see in the W/C section. In that case, Booo on the second market. Don't ever deal with the second market. They can't be trusted. Very bad. Thumbs down for the second market.:thumbdn::thumbdn: Do not recommend anybody deal with the second market.

don't let all this upset you. these are not necessities in life. sometimes you win, sometimes you don't :D

I buy most of my knives off the secondary market. I got a Buck 110 for $350 -- was that a good deal? :D

If it was a production, non-customized model that sells for less than $50 retail at Walmart, then sure. ;) I agree with the OP. The secondary market for Hinderers is ridiculous. And people say Sebenzas are over hyped. I still think this is more a W/C thread than a G/B/U thread since it isn't referring to anyone or any business in particular. Just a poster whining about the prices of secondary market Hinderers and the fact that he always misses out on the retail priced ones, except for a store that won't ship to his state. Oh well, no biggie.
