Bought one just seconds ago..online at steel addiction. Gen 3 xm-18 3.5 inch. Now I'm freaking out...$650!! Am I nuts? I've never even seen one in person. Anybody that can tell me I'm not an idiot?..I feel sick.

I thought everybody should just be happy with a Small Sebenza? ;)

They're extremely well-made knives, so you don't have to worry about getting it in hand and thinking that the quality isn't up to par. Whether they're worth $650 is a matter of individual preference, but suffice to say that a lot of people seem to think that they are (as evidenced by the secondary market prices hovering in the $625-675 range for non-custom XM-18s). The latter point also means that, if you decide you don't want to keep it, you should be able to get all or nearly all of your money back by selling it.

Well you bought it so it seems kind of late to question whether it was a good idea. I have two XM-18's and they are fantastic knives. That being said, there is no way I'd pay over $450 for a plain model. If you take your time, you can find them at the regular price of around $400. But if you rthink it's worth $650 then that is all that matters.

At worst you'll flip it for a little loss. Consider it a rental fee for checking out what all the fuss is about.

$400, on the secondary market? Not happening. Even dealers have them for $650-$750. If I could get an XM-18 for $400 (and trust me, I've been looking), I would have quite a few.

I think maybe we're all crazy. Oh well gotta be in to something..I'll let you know what I think when I get it. Somebody sold one for $650 the other day in just a couple hours. I'm looking for a keeper though. Hope it's not too bulky for EDC..

Hello,

I am from France, excuse my english,

I got a xm18 3.5 second hand in mint condition for 350 $ this year. It was on a french knife forum for several weeks long and nobody was interested. I think nobody in France does know what an hinderer is in reality.
I did offer an exchange with an ultratech to the seller and he did accept. I am a lucky boy !

I am very happy with this knife and will not sell or exchange it

...

I'm second on this. Not only in France but also in Europe hinderer is not so common and popular as e.g. sebenza.
I've had gen2 XM-18 with smooth CF inlay and no chance to sell it for €750. I've had it on 3 or 4 European forums, and I've had offer for €500 and maybe some trade offers.

The way the XM-18's move around here you should have no trouble selling it if you decide to part with it down the road.

they are fantastic knives. i had around 650$ invested in the one i just sold. was just too expensive for me to use honestly. but im poor and have a sucky job so yea...

Lol right !!! Everytime these knives change hands the seller thinks they are entitled to charge the next person more to cover the shipping/insurance they payed plus the new shipping/insurance , plus a little profit !!! :D

I think your nuts. That's alot more money than even the manufacturer thinks the msrp should cost. $650.00 is what a real full blown custom folder goes for. The XM-18 is a nice knife but it still is considered a production custom and no IKBS. The Hinderers price is high for all the wrong reasons. IMO.

@Scottcityman: I've got 2 of them - best knives I own and they're really hard to come by... Particularly if they're new.

It's maybe a little too much but I paid $500 and $550 for mine (the $550 was new, the $500 was lightly used) - At most you paid like 10-15% too much. Consider it a premium...

I get buyer's remorse with a lot of things. Get on overwhelming urge to buy a specific thing, wait 2-3 months to see if it dies down, finally give in, and 24 hours later wondering what I was thinking lol. Usually it works out ok in the long run. $650 is a lot though, thats over a 50% markup. Still, lots of people are in the same boat as you, which is probably part of they XM-18s are selling all over the place. Sure some of those for sale are from people that can get them from him selling them for big profit (I considered doing this since I am Active Duty Military, coulda made a pretty penny), but most are people just like you with some degree of Buyer's Remorse. If the fad lasts, you can probably carry it for a year, use it all you want, and still flip it for a $50 or less loss.

What I don't understand is why Rick can't satisfy demand the way someone like Chris Reeve does. From what I understand regular production XM-18s don't have hand ground blades. Why can't he make enough knives or doesn't he want to?

I think I've seen them sell for $800 or close to that from dealers. There are a couple at $775 + shipping on the bay too.

Laurin, let me liberate the Gen 2 from you...hehe, bud :D

I think if Rick raised his price to $450-$500, he would still have no problem selling them. But anything over $500, you are just paying for supply and demand.
