i have one of these on order. i had assumed the steel is Duratech 20cv however i have seen a retailer giving it's specs. as S30v. which is it, or are both being used ?

couldnt find anything on rick's website regarding blade steel.

according to blade magazine it is the duratech.

As far as I know, Rick told me he was using S30V but he could have changed it.

To the best of my knowledge, Rick is NOW using Duratech 20 CV. He is no longer using S30V.

Hey guys! Yup I am now using Duratech 20cv...in defence of the dealer I did have it on my site as S30V but I have since changed...there are however some of the earlier XM's out there that are S30V... But all the new ones are Duratech 20CV

No doubt so you can take orders once again - an start working feverishly again. Hope I have that right.

Rick if you get back to this, I have heard mixed reviews about 20cv. As always new steels get hype and some glaring stares from makers who dont use it. Could you offer us any insight as to your thoughts on this steel and your desicion to use it?

Sure thing Jim...the only reason why I use it is I like it and feel it really is a superior steel. I have made quite a few knives out of 20cv and am really impressed with its machinability and grinding properties.
As for using it I have done alot of testing with 20cv and am constantly impressed with all aspects of the steel....
But if you really want to see how it stacks up to other steels such as S30v go to Latrobe steels website and look at the data sheet for Duratech 20cv....if you look at the compsition of the steel compared to s30v it will make your eyebrow go up...alot of good stuff going on in there...
as well they have the results of a side by side edge retention when compared to s30v (14-2-4 CrMoV) Duratech 180% and s30v 145% this test was done by the Cutlery&Allied trade Research Association..so it is imparshal (sp?)..of course this backs up my own results....so yes I do really like it...and as for the pther makers who dont ..well its probably because they arent using it and using another steel...

Material Notes:
DuraTech 20CV is a highly wear resistant, powder metallurgy stainless tool steel. The steel containes a large volume of extremely hard vanadium carbides, wich provide excellent wear resistance. DuraTech 20CV contains the highest amount of chromium of any high-vanadium stainless steel currently available. The chromium-rich matrix provides outstanding corrosion resistance. DuraTech 20CV is a versatile stainless tool steel with a unique combination of high wear resistance, high corrosion resistance, good impact toughness, and excellent polishability. This combination of properties is the result of the fine grain size, small carbides, and superior cleanliness of the powder metallurgy (PM) microstructure. DuraTech 20CV excels in applications, which require a combination of high wear resisatance. The unique combinations of properties makes DuraTech 20CV an excellent steel for plastic injection feed screws, barrel liners, screw tips, and mold cavities, especially for plastic resins which contain abrasive fillers. Other applications inlcude food processing equipement, pelletizer knives, granulator knives, and high-performance custom knives.

looking forward to when you accept more orders rick. I love the xm18. Beauty of a knife!

Microtech used it on there L.C.C.'s years ago. It's a great steel, performs a lot like S30V, but seems to be easier to sharpen.

I got one with the intention of keeping it mint... Now it's my favorite EDC folder in just less than a month. Begs to be carried! I don't know what the steel is (advertised as s30v, but the seller may have assumed that also), but the EDGE is screaming scary sharp. One of the very few of many knives in my collection with the distinction of tasting my blood. :) Now I want one in green, and a flipper version too.
