hinderer xm 18 --- steel ?

I can tell you I've had nothing but rave reivews from my customers who've bought XM's. A well thought out design that offers excellent value.

Phillip :)

Thanks a bunch for the comments guys! and gals! ;)

Thalestin, Hey keep an eye out on the dealer sites like Notdos here!..I am also sending XM-18's hot off the bench to them!

Jaxx, Thanks a bunch!..It sure warms my heart to hear that you are EDC'ing that XM-18!! I may be able to help with identifying the steel.if you can send me a pic of it and I'll see if I can tell the time period I made it.

Thanks Phillip!

ooh the more I see them the more I fall in love with this knife. Definatly going to be the first custom I buy. I am going to treat myself to it once I reach 190 lbs (currently 210). Going to be one heck of a motivation to keep at the exercise=)

The XM-18 is a fantastic knife! It is tough as heck!! have you seen the torture tests that Rick does? DO check out his site. I LOVE my bright blue one!! The XM-18 IS one of my absolute favorite knives!! I like seeing other people excited about it too!

i received my XM-18 about 3 months ago (new from on line dealer after long wait, so i'm pretty sure steel is DuraTech 20CV). while idly flicking, the knife slipped and stuck a wooden slate of a baby gate (fortunately baby was napping elsewhere) and then fell to wooden floor. at first i thought there was a small chip out of the edge about 3/8" from the tip. inspection with 10X magnification shows edge has deformed (rolled), leaving a small depression with a heaped up edge. the wood it struck is not hard, probably spruce or pine, so i am a little surprised. is this steel known to deform relatively easily ?
has anyone else had edge rolling ? am i expecting too much from this steel ?
thanks, roland

No steel is perfect . . . but rolling is definitely better than chipping, FWIW

What angle is the edge sharpened at? A very thin edge could make a difference

Mine was stolen.
If some newb chimes in here from CT with an 'R.Hinderer' knife they found, please contact me immediately.
I'm pretty sure they took it due to coolness and have no clue of it's value. I have identifying marks on it as well as the edge degree was changed. Black, non flipper, plain edge with satin finish.

Good to see you here Rick, I'll be placing an order eventually if I'm unable to find one at a dealer.

I wish I could EDC mine, but it is too big (per policy), I love it though, it has cut up a ton of kindling and tent stakes, cardboard, wire ties and wires. I believe mine is S30V, and if I can ever get a little ahead I want to get a 3 inch in Duratec. Steven

I am getting my xm 3 inch flipper in orange this week. I placed my order in august 2006. Rick contacted me last week and I should get mine very soon. I feel so lucky to own such a highly praised knife at such a low price. Thank you Rick for giving us a great value and a beautiful, functional knife.

using felt marker and my Edgepro, i get about 23 degrees per side.
any advice on sharpening it ? maintain same angle; finish with a finer grit ; and how to do along spanto curve ? i have found that it takes quite a lot of force to cut into or through small (~ 1/2 in. diameter) sticks. perhaps i can improve that by narrowing edge down some, but how much ? anybody done this with their's ? thanks, roland

:grumpy: Damn, that SUXX AZZ... I'm very sorry to hear this. Exactly the version I own & EDC... If I hear anything like you describe, I'll come runnin' to find you. Best of luck to you in the recovery of yours, and may this happen very SOON.

Suggestion... Keep an eye on eBay, and the Craigslist.org page for your area... The thief just might be foolish enough to try selling it...

I am EDCing my 3 inch XM-18 too!! I LOVE this knife!!

Rick Rocks! I received my XM-18 (standard, no flipper, dark green) about a month ago here in Iraq (along with a big box of goodies from him, his wife an in-laws...great people). It's be a great EDC...built like a tank. Interesting on the edge deformation as mine has been excellent...even glanced off a nail in a piece of wood.

23 degrees is a pretty good/strong angle.
Is it possible that you caught a metal bracket on the baby-gate?

I'm sure that you can send it in to Rick to have him fix it up for you, or you can just sharpen it again and call it a single serration.

Thanks, I am doing that as well. Chances are though they are too stupid to know the value and will likely not try and sell it.
