Hinderer XM18 stop pin question

sounds like something went wrong on the site contact form. My experience was that Rob emailed me back within a couple hours when i contacted them to fix a weird detent issue.

What contact form are you using? The forms available on this forum go to Spark, the owner of Bladeforums, no one else.

Hey Rev, I might be wrong but I took it to mean the contact form on Rick Hinderer's website.

I have a new Gen 4 purchased in January from an authorized dealer. My stop pin also rattles when the blade is open. In the closed position, no issues.
Bothers me a bit also but everything else on the knife is perfect, except for a "nick" on the top of the blade near the tip.
Flips great once I got it broken in, perfectly centered, super solid lockup, and extremely smooth action.

We have seen a few out of a large number that have come through our shop that have rattled. It has not been many by any means, maybe 1 out of every 100. Have any of you guys who have had a problem with this, contacted the dealer where you bought the knife? If you got them from us I certainly hope you will let me know. Rob is great about returning emails and phone calls and Hinderer is great about fixing the few problems that are out there on their knives. I certainly understand buying a $400+ knife and being surprised/bothered by a rattle.

well i woulnt be using bladeforums to contact hinderer :p - I initially used the hinderer website, but per Rob's instructions on this site actually he has offered that you can email him directly. You can find it in the archived hinderer forum as well: rob@rickhindererknives.com

Stranger things have happened.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Yes I was having trouble with the contact page on hinderer's website. It seemed to work everytime(it said that the message was sent successful) but I never got a responses. I contacted Rob so hopefully the problem will be resolved soon. USA made blade, no worries. They were from 2 other dealers.

It sucks, because I love the knives. It's just annoying that everytime I use them I can hear rattling and if its only 1 out of 100 knives I am very unlucky lol. If you think about it, its kind of weird that the sleeve would be rattling because that means there is no pressure on it at all, so its not doing the job it was intended to do. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Thanks for Rob's email address boostdemon. Just emailed him about my loose stop pin, would be nice if it could be fixed. I had previously just accepted that it was always going to rattle.

I received a response from Rob at Hinderer about my "loose" stop pin, apparently this is not an issue and designed this way. Still enjoying the knife, slight rattle and all!

From Rob: "We do not press fit the pins, they are intended to float. A tight pin could cause thing to bind, creating an issue where it would be difficult to center a blade"

Yep, I got the same response from Rob. Glad it is intended to do that. It kind of reminds of the rattles guns and weapons make in movies when they just pick them up and move them. Reminds you that its mechanical, at least thats what i tell myself lol. I have a feeling that the majority of the newer gen xm's are like this, but most people don't shake their knives to listen for rattles though.

I purchased a new Xm-18 a couple months ago from an authorized dealer and I had the same stop pin movement and rattling sound. The pin would spin and rattle for a few seconds after blade deployment. I sent the knife back to the dealer. I did email Hinderer and never heard from them. I bought another Xm-18 with the battle black blade a month later with no stop pin movement or sound. The other 5 Hinderer's I own are all perfect. They flip well to boot!

I took apart mine a week ago, besides plastic washers, all pins are one piece, I too wasn't amazed at my H XM18, my Reate, ZT, Kizer, they all flip so smooth, not so with this one
