Another right rear pocket EDCer here.
When the lock failed, I was stabbing some cardboard boxes using an underhanded stabbing motion. I stabbed, lifted and twisted the knife out of the cardboard, which was a thick apple box. That is when I felt the blade's finger choil touch my index finger.
My guess is that the upward pulling motion put pressure on the spine of the knife, which pushed the liner lock to the left, which disengaged the lock.
After that, I decided to experiment with a series of differing spine whacks and pressures. First, I put the entire blade on the edge of a table and applied downward pressure. It passed. Second, I applied downward pressure on the tip of the blade. It failed almost immediately with little pressure. Third, I did a spine whack on the tip. It failed immediately under light taps 5 or 6 times in a row. Fourth, I tried a spine whack on the entire blade. It held up under decent pressure, but it failed when I gave it a good whack.
I understand that it will fail with a good spine whack, but when it fails with slight pressure to the tip, then the lock isn't working right. I didn't pay $80 for a knife with a crappier lock than my $30 knives.
I hope the one they return to me is as tough as it should be. I really like this knife. I really do hope it was a defect and not something I'll have to just deal with.
