Anyone familiar w/ Buck's model 131?
I was wondering the time frame it came out?
I'm remembering the 136 and 137 came out in mid 1970's. I was thinking the 131 came out prior to these. So, perhaps early 1970's during the 2 liners.
Anyone know for sure.DM

I am a life-time member of an ultra-cool organization....the Buck Collectors Club Inc.. Jack Foresman gave me a password, now I can log in anytime, to the BCCI website. Makes me look smart, but there has been a lot of hard work by Club members compiling all that info, so really I can only take credit for reading what's available;)

Scott,I'm a life member as well (#1119)and many times I try to pull that info. out on model #'s.The sites down,no info. available on that model, it takes too long to load, ect..
That I just don't bother trying to look models up there.Maybe I should check in lately.
By the way, I now have most all Buck's sharpening models offered between 1966 to the 4 dots. Some with the box and paper work. Thanks DM

Now that's a great collection too! Prior to 1966, I didn't see the Washita Stone, but an Oil Stone was offered. I looked in each old catalog & price sheet listed for each year. I'm just lucky to have a good high speed connection.

Yup, David, Conditions in Buck collector land have improved. The far end speed is fine usually it is on our end if problem. Maybe a bird flies thru the satelite beam or some such out in blue sky country.....jumps up decently for me but, oh I forget our little town of 8,000 converted to fiber-optic lines (if you can afford it). I think it passed in the vote because people wanted to play computer poker or download grandkids photos, one of the other............300Bucks

Found one of the 131 stones in all this mess, then found a 138 shirt pocket type sharpener, a 139 box with Buck knife oil and a cleaning brush. And somewhere in this mess is supposed to be a steel that I believe is the 137, but it is hiding somewhere.

It's amazing what I forget is here till you guys get to talking about something.

Its bad,,, :D

I finally found one of the 137 Steel Masters, but there is a new one in a box that is still awol, as well as a 136 in a box, if I have that number right. I think its the one that clamps onto the blade. Haven't found those as yet.

Could be right here on this desk somewhere....:rolleyes:

300,Yes,I'm sure I'm behind the times. But considering,it took us one year to get a phone line out here and our Rural Farm Bureau Improvement monies to kick in and we'll never see DSL.So, its dial-up or satellite. The later being 300$ for install and 40/mo. causes us to chew that pill awhile. All things considered--behind looks good.
Pack,yes,the 137 came w/ sheath and box.A dandy.Then the 136 w/ a plastic flip lid box
and you may have 133 Delux sharpening kit w/a can of Buck's honing oil.I've not seen any company produce a angle guide that topped Buck's 136 in craftsmanship. Its even written up in Mr.Bottorff's book Sharpening Made Easy.DM

Yup, the awol 137 has the box, papers and sheath. The other one is just the steel and is laying here being fondeled.

I think my 136 is just the one in the plastic box. Don't think it came with the oil. Can't imagine where I put those two.

I was looking at this (nib) 139 box that has the knife oil, and the paper says to "NEVER USE BUCK KNIFE OIL FOR HONING" I thought that was interesting.

Guys,

I have the steel with sheath, the crock sticks in plastic box, the ball point pen like steel and the plastic box with stone, oil in a cardboard sheath and the watch-m-call-it to hold your knife at the right angle when you stone. What am I missing.......300Bucks

I finally rounded up the strays, so thought it would be interesting to put up some pics for ones that aren't familiar.

Pack, Thanks for posting the pictures.Do you think they meant Buck knife oil was like gun oil and not made for sharpening stones? Way back I had a bottle of Buck honing oil.It was red stuff. One day I rubbed my shot gun down w/ it and the next day it had rust spots. My dad saw it and made me get it off. Then I read the can and it said, wipe off
excess...not for fire arms. So, it could have been something like that.DM

I have no clue about the oil. This is the color of motor oil.

Actually I wouldn't even use it to lubricate a knife. Will stick to the clear oils, like sewing machine or 3n1. I use the 3n1 on my lansky hones and haven't seen any issues some 30 years later.

I guess they make different oils for different thing... On the bottle of my Buck oil, it said "Use for knife lubrication only" ... I wasn't going to use it But Leroy from Triple-r-knives said it's ok too... He told me he has been using it for ever and still does... So I guess I'll use it till it's all gone... He said don't ever use any honing oil on my knives...

Like Pack Rat said, it does look like motor oil... ...

And here is the Model 132, the Honing Oil to the 131 Washita Stone.

Best,
Haebbie
