Ever get that deja vu feeling when you are buying a new knife? Like, wait, I think I have bought one of these before! maybe several times? Now, I am not talking about those with 'Collection' of a certain model to get every iteration of it, that's a true Collector there. I'm talking about when at the moment you are buying a new knife, you don't have one in your collection but feel driven to get that particular knife. Only to remember after it arrives and had it a few days why you parted with it before and will do so yet again.
I have been quite prone to this scenario too many times. Off hand the Spyderco mfg have a high ranking of those I have bought over and over again, like the Manix, Delica, Native Chief, the most was the Southard, I think I had 5 or 6 of them over the years. And other mfg I have had similar issues with buying, then selling it to fund something else or it just fell out of favour to only spark my interest several months down the road all over again. Frustrating, not to mention, expensive lessons not learned
Tonight I was on the prowl for a Spyderco Manix 2 as I had a friend's knife in recently to have a lanyard tied on and thought, Gee this is a really nice knife, I should look into getting one. And I almost pulled the trigger, what slowed me down were the multitude of steel/scale options out there that it gave me the time to search sales history to see that I have owned several of those only to sell them. So I took that finding to halt my searching, but who knows what next week will bring.
I said all that to say this, my scheme of trimming down my collection and the long search for THE knife was going well, until recently. But in my heart of hearts I do need to trim back and settle down. Age is creeping up, you'd think I would be smarter by now? lol but not so much.
So, just a word of advice, I think I read that someone once said, if you really want something, sleep on it, give yourself a day or even two before you click that button.
Goodluck guys and gals out there, those knife makers are clever people always coming up with new and eye catching designs to draw us to buy, can't blame them but it sure is amazing how they keep doing that.
