Ever get that deja vu feeling when you are buying a new knife? Like, wait, I think I have bought one of these before! maybe several times? Now, I am not talking about those with 'Collection' of a certain model to get every iteration of it, that's a true Collector there. I'm talking about when at the moment you are buying a new knife, you don't have one in your collection but feel driven to get that particular knife. Only to remember after it arrives and had it a few days why you parted with it before and will do so yet again.
I have been quite prone to this scenario too many times. Off hand the Spyderco mfg have a high ranking of those I have bought over and over again, like the Manix, Delica, Native Chief, the most was the Southard, I think I had 5 or 6 of them over the years. And other mfg I have had similar issues with buying, then selling it to fund something else or it just fell out of favour to only spark my interest several months down the road all over again. Frustrating, not to mention, expensive lessons not learned ;)

Tonight I was on the prowl for a Spyderco Manix 2 as I had a friend's knife in recently to have a lanyard tied on and thought, Gee this is a really nice knife, I should look into getting one. And I almost pulled the trigger, what slowed me down were the multitude of steel/scale options out there that it gave me the time to search sales history to see that I have owned several of those only to sell them. So I took that finding to halt my searching, but who knows what next week will bring.

I said all that to say this, my scheme of trimming down my collection and the long search for THE knife was going well, until recently. But in my heart of hearts I do need to trim back and settle down. Age is creeping up, you'd think I would be smarter by now? lol but not so much.

So, just a word of advice, I think I read that someone once said, if you really want something, sleep on it, give yourself a day or even two before you click that button.

Goodluck guys and gals out there, those knife makers are clever people always coming up with new and eye catching designs to draw us to buy, can't blame them but it sure is amazing how they keep doing that.

Terrible Terrible advice I tell you!
I just missed out on a rifle Sunday because I decided to sleep on it.

I generally have a list and something has to be on the list for 6 months (I have a tremendous ability to talk my self into and out of things) then it’s all systems go when the time comes. But I don’t always follow my own advice.

I have several knives that I don't really care for - and from your example, Spyderco. I have a few like the Mantra, Positron, and Southard Hanan, and even the Manix 2, that I really don't care for at all.

I just haven't tried to sell them, for whatever reason (laziness, or don't want to sell a knife I'm afraid someone else won't like either, because I'm not going to push something I don't like on someone else without being honest why I'm selling it).

It's fun to be a gear head, but it's also expensive. I've done this now with guitars, vintage and modern tube-valve amplifiers, knives, the best harsh-weather umbrellas....hell, building high-end gaming PCs...whatever gear thing it is. It's not a sickness, it's just something fun to get into if you appreciate design, no matter what the subject.

I’m the same way. I have a list and at this point most stuff has been on it for years.

When I see something pop up that’s on the list and I have the dough, I don’t hesitate.

This seems to happen in groups here lately, but I’ve been shedding a few as I bring in a few.

Been there, done that. In the past 2 weeks I have found 6-7 knives that I wanted, and that sleeping on them had me reconsider. Most recently it was the Alliance Design Laconico EZE 2.0 Integral. It turns out I have an older EZE with Ti lockface and carbon fiber show side, with the same classic compound tanto blade. The main difference is mine is not the newer Ti integral with carbon fiber (or zirc) inlays.

I believe a lot of it is the thrill of the chase - to try something different regularly, even if we do currently own The One. It's not the same as being a serial cheater, because a multitude of knives were meant to be swapped and rotated depending on the chore or our clothing and mood. Our wives are more versatile than our knives and so we get just one (at a time) 😅

For those out there wondering, I sent Gary two Manix 2 in the past few weeks, for lanyards but in separate shipments. These two would make ANYONE want to own one...

(1) The first was a Manix 2 Stormtrooper in REX45 (black blade, white scales), on which he installed a lanyard with a cool "Stormtrooper helmet with a skull inside it" bead that I found. That got his juices flowing.

(2) The most recent Manix 2 is currently on the way back to me - a Knifejoy exclusive in 20CV and neon green G100 scales; on which I got the requisite matching frog bead lanyard installed (looks like a frog from a Hayao Miyazaki movie like Spirited Away 🥰).
