History repeats itself...again

That’s why ya gotta keep ‘em all and let your heirs sort ‘em out. :)
I told my heirs that I am going to enjoy looking down at all the happy collectors when they sell my stuff for what they think it’s worth. 🙂

Even funnier is when you run into a knife that you really like, but are frustrated that you can’t buy it because you already own one (or several) copy(s) of the identical model.🤪

I hear ya. My 2024 resolution is to NOT BUY ANYMORE DUPLICATES!

We will see how that works out.

Been there, done that. In the past 2 weeks I have found 6-7 knives that I wanted, and that sleeping on them had me reconsider. Most recently it was the Alliance Design Laconico EZE 2.0 Integral. It turns out I have an older EZE with Ti lockface and carbon fiber show side, with the same classic compound tanto blade. The main difference is mine is not the newer Ti integral with carbon fiber (or zirc) inlays.

I believe a lot of it is the thrill of the chase - to try something different regularly, even if we do currently own The One. It's not the same as being a serial cheater, because a multitude of knives were meant to be swapped and rotated depending on the chore or our clothing and mood. Our wives are more versatile than our knives and so we get just one (at a time) 😅

For those out there wondering, I sent Gary two Manix 2 in the past few weeks, for lanyards but in separate shipments. These two would make ANYONE want to own one...

(1) The first was a Manix 2 Stormtrooper in REX45 (black blade, white scales), on which he installed a lanyard with a cool "Stormtrooper helmet with a skull inside it" bead that I found. That got his juices flowing.

(2) The most recent Manix 2 is currently on the way back to me - a Knifejoy exclusive in 20CV and neon green G100 scales; on which I got the requisite matching frog bead lanyard installed (looks like a frog from a Hayao Miyazaki movie like Spirited Away 🥰).

That Stormtrooper is out.of.sight. Very cool!!

And that guy was me, but turned out to be one that I didn't keep and Doc is taking it as a spare now.

And add to my problem, I have a new Benchmade Taggedout in bound, the last one I had was the orange one with CPM154, which I parted with, but this one has G10 scales and S45v blade, I'll see how long this one lasts...

So I think my Taggedout is like the one you gave up - with orange scales and standoffs, a CPM154 blade, and thumb holes; except I have Flytanium Ti scales on mine.

I'd prefer the model you ordered with thumb-studs and S45VN too, so I think you will like it. I just like G10 as much as Micarta, carbon fiber, or Ti. It still beats the orange plastic scales!

Oh yeah! Very familiar feeling! :)
I bought Buck 110 classic four times over the years. Every time I received it... The knife began to irritate from the first minutes and went away after a couple of days. I kept the last one I bought, Bass Pro cpm 154. So I wouldn't play it again. :)
I bought Spyderco Endura three times. VG-10, ZDP-189, ended up keeping the V-Toku2 with a carbon handle.
I bought the Benchmade 810 Contego three times. M4, M390, M4 black. I still couldn't understand this knife. All 810s are sold.

I know how that goes. I must have gone through close to a dozen Emersons, the same model several times over, before I realized I don't really like them. And I've made a few impulse purchases over the years that almost always ended up regretting. Not that they were bad knives, just that I didn't consider whether I really had a need for a particular model. Nowadays I definitely tend to sleep on it, sometimes up to a week. If I'm still interested, then I'll figure out a way to make the purchase. It's not foolproof, but it does help keep me from making too many frivolous purchases.

M maxjeg thanks for the reminder, I must have bought a dozen enduras and 6 Delicas. Two days ago I was looking at enduras again thinking I'm not sure why I don't have one anymore.... I still have 3 Delicas laying around to remind me how meh they are. 1 frn, 1 stainless, 1 in Boomer G10 I gave the wife. Now that I'm thinking of it I've bought several police in stainless and I'm on my 3rd Matriarch.... 🙃

I'd probably buy another police but luckily I bought a David Mary Resilience regrind and it scratches that itch nicely. Unless I find a good deal on a full serrated K390.....

Thanks to the generosity of BlindMouse2of3 BlindMouse2of3 for the loan of this Manix 2, I will get the chance to try it out and then decide if I need to get one, chances are probably pretty good, it's a very nice folder. I added a lanyard on it, about the last of that purple paracord but it matches quite well.

Gary W. Graley Gary W. Graley I love seeing your knife 'collecting' experience, and glad that you share it with us here! You definitely hold fast to your ideals!

I don't think I've ever re-bought a knife that I had forgotten about, but it is possible. I've bought some Spyderco's and Benchmade's several times..... Endura, Delica, PM2, 940, probably more. Ultimately realized I didn't like any of them at all.

That looks great. I hope it treats you well. It'll be good for it to get some use. Full disclosure since that sample will sway your opinion of the manix 2: it is missing 1 coil off the spring and it has been greased instead of oiled. But is stock other than that. Hopefully now you'll only end up with one if you like it.

Explanation for those thinking it odd since grease collects pocket lint. I'm a mechanic and have a ngl0 high rpm bearing grease that works great. Before anyone asks it comes in a $500 case and its not a supporting vendor so no link. In general it will grab lint but also debris and metal shavings and everything else and ideally keep it out of the washers. Yes it adds upkeep but I'm required to take an hour lunch at work so that's when I sharpen, clean, disassemble and tinker with my collection. And for those in a different setting my office is in a shop not attached to the main office so anything smaller than the skrama 240 doesn't get a second glance unless someone is interested in it. After 5 years my boss doesn't even look twice at any of it. 😁

In the past few weeks you've been able to handle 3 different ones - a stock Manix 2 lightweight Stormtrooper, a stock green G10 Manix 2, and a slightly modified G10 Manix 2 with special grease not oil.

Is the action too stiff or too loose on any of them? Is the lock release too stiff or too loose? How is the grip's fit, finger choil and choke up position, weight, and thumb hole position for ergonomics and easy opening and closing? Is the blade shape and geometry what you like without the tip being too high? Do they make one in the steel and color that you like?

Personally I think that if you've handled this many and are still considering it, that maybe it is the knife for you.

But I'd wait until the Benchmade Tagged out shows up first, so you can decide if you're exchanging that for a Spyderco

Handling and using are two different things, as I didn’t try yours out or carried them as they were not mine to cut with
So this one I am allowed to do with as I want
Time will tell

I find for me I really decide if it was a good idea to have bought a knife after I do some heavy cutting with it. Loved the pm2 until I discovered I tend to stab myself with it during heavy chores. Msi was great but scales flex a lot when cutting cove base. Demko 20.5 is great for the first 10 minutes of fidgeting with it then the tip of my finger gets sore. And my pants with reinforced pockets are to thick for the clip to easily go over but it's a great utility knife. After a couple weeks a guy can really learn if he needs a particular knife.

I need to start sending some of my knives over to you Gary to get some sweet lanyards. I think that's always half the enjoyment when Ive purchased your knives in the past, getting an awesome lanyard bonus 😁
