hitachi white steel

hmmm... 2" wide stock... now I get to figure out the best way to nest straight razors to get the most out of this steel! Hoping to have Mark (H20knife) work his waterjet magic...

The difference between the hitachi steel and W2 is that Hitachi steel is super consistant from batch to batch, the sulphur content is very very minimal and the carbon content is higher. Basically it is a super clean carbon steel similar to W1, just with minimal sulphur. Sulphur is what makes a carbon steel knife smell funky when you cut food. Also, with onions, potatoes and a few other veggies, it will cause the product being cut to turn black. It is still very easily forged, water hardening carbon steel.

According to the specs of Hitachi White here :http://www.prometheanknives.com/shop-techniques-3/info-about-hitachi-cutlery-steels-blue-white

And Aldo's Specs for his W2 here: http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=18598

Aldo's W2 is well within the Hitachi Specs for Mn, Sulfpher and P and Si.

That pretty much leaves the Carbon (different between White 1, 2, 3 ect) and Vanadium (present in w2, not so in white steel) content the major differances between the two that I see.

still have a 500 lb diferential from the origanal orders and what i have now need those approx orders in asap or no steel can be ordered

got an email from hitachi today they stated that it takes about a week to get a quote back from japan on the steel

got the final quote for hitachi and we are at the 10 a lb price yay but their is a 3000 lb min for this steel the white number 1
and the super blue is 16 a lb wow so ive gotta talk to some of the big guys tomorrow at alpha and aldo and jantz i cant believe they made it a 3k minimum

Yeah, Unless one or more of the suppliers want to step in, this sounds like a dead horse.
I hope they want to get in.

Sounds like they're yanking your chain. It started out at $7/lb with a 1,000 lb minimum, but when you collected a 1,000 lb order, they upped the price to $10/lb with a 3,000 lb minimum?

I'd bet a case of beer if you got the 3,000 lb order they'd up the price and the minimum again...

As I began to suspect, and as earlier stated in this thread, and as I've heard from a very good additional source, they just don't want to export their cutlery steels in stock form. National pride?

would there be any reason someone like Aldo couldn't have a new smelt with the same specs as what they offer? or is it pattented?
Jason

It has been interesting watching this story unfold. I hope you are successful, but will admit I've been dubious about this from the beginning. I considered chipping in a small order to help out, but it seems apparent now that I couldn't have helped in any significant way.
