In last month's newsletter, we urged you to tune in to watch Myke Hawke of Specops on The Discovery Channel. It appears that a whole lot of you did. As a result, Hawke has received a ton of emails, asking him about the machete he used in the program on survival. Here's the info all you backyard jungle warriors have asked for:

Hawke said he actually used a cheap machete he picked up in Southeast Asia because machetes frequently break or get lost and he just happened to like the style and weight, but he said the one used on the show is actually too heavy for normal use. His recommendations are Cold Steel's Kukri for woodland, their double edge machete for general survival and their heavy metal for jungle or light metal when a lot of cutting is expected.

Taken from an interview with Myke Hake. Yes the one at the link looks just like the one he used in the show.

Asoul;

Hiro is a small japanese co. that makes their stuff by hand, the old fashioned way. sypderco used to be the u.s. distributor and stopped bringing in hiro stuff about 10 years ago. hence the trouble finding someone in the u.s. who has had one sitting in inventory for 10 years. they come in 2 sizes medium 10.5" and large about 14".

this machete, would be considered like a samurai sword for machetes, high quality. anyone ever heard of m.v.s. 8 stainless steel?

asoul, if you do track it down, be a good egg and drop me a p.m., good luck.

p.s. my sources at the discovery channnel say that you will be seeing hawke again, soon...

I think Myke is not being completely truthful about the machete he used. It sure looks like a Hiro to me. But Valor and Frost both have a very close match. The Valor model 2239 (about $5.00 on line) and the Frost Cutlery Machete (about $10 on line). You can find these at several online vendors.

The Hiro would seem to be much higher quality than the thinner and cheaper Valor/Frost/no-name machetes I've handled. Considering the prices on the Hiros, I'd expect them to be significantly higher quality than the Valor/Frost/no-name machetes, too.

I'm not familiar with Myke Hawke, but if he had what was described as a cheap machete that looked like the Hiro, it probably wasn't a Hiro.

Anyone know anything about this Hiro Traditional Machete?

http://www.tozandoshop.com/Hiro_Machete_Traditional_p/082-ts20.htm

I really like the looks of this but have no idea how thick it is and at 31,500 yen that's something like $335.00 (Not sure of the exact current exchange rate). Not sure if I'd fork that out... but the knife looks really cool.

Edit: They have a currency converter on there and it would be $327.03.

Some of my fondest memories of growing up in Hawaii were using a machete for cutting open coconut husks, and thrashing our way through jungle thickets.

Nothing more fun as a kid than swinging one of those things. And I still have my finders. Those were the days!

Found the blade again because the original link doesnt work anymore... I was watching a movie the other day (book of eli) and he had such a bad ass blade that it reminded me of this old blade and this thread. So as I was googling I found out that people are still posting with interest on this thread almost 3 years later ... so here is the latest direction... enjoy... o and when i originally posted the hiro company's factory had just had a fire and were no longer manufacturing so I would up buying the Rosarms "baby" mini machete... its nots a kukri blade but it is pretty seriously bad ass!!! enjoy..

Asoul:

Persistence pays. I finally did track down and purchase Myke Hawke's Machete about 4-5 months ago. It is a nice blade. Not sure why it was said after the show that it was a cheap blade.

Hiro does not make anything cheap and neither was the price.

I am looking forward to his new show in about 2 weeks and hope it will be as good as the I shouldn't be Alive series.

Now that I've seen the picture, I have a cheap Chinese version that looks the exact same, right down to the holes in the blade. I think I got it either from Bud-K or Smokey Mntn. The one difference is mine is black-coated, and it cost about $5!

Thanks for posting all this folks. I ordered my own from these guys:

http://www.japaneseknifedirect.com/Specials.html

No problems with it coming airmail from Japan and I got a very fast delivery. It certainly is a very good looking machete - beautiful blade (stainless and polished) and a very solid feel to it. It also comes with a very nice sheath (best sheath of any machete I have too).

My overall impression is that this is a VERY well made machete despite what Hawke is saying about it. It certainly is the highest quality machete that I have in my collection and far and away the prettiest. I wouldn't hesitate to take this one on a real jungle trip. (Perhaps Hawke is more interested in touting certain products for which he gets kickbacks).

However after a bit of testing myself I do think Hawke was being truthful when he talked about it being perhaps a bit heavy for extended use. You'll feel that in your wrist after a short time of swinging it around. I did find that it keeps an edge very well which was one of my big concerns about it being a hollow ground and stainless blade. It also didn't immediately get covered in scratches which surprised me. After about an hour of hacking it cleaned up nicely and looked like new again with only a touch of metal polish. It also still had a very keen edge which surprised me a lot (it sliced my thumb open "painlessly" while cleaning it).

I find that it being so pretty only makes you want to polish it though - I never bother doing that with my other machetes.

I do have other machetes in my collection and one of my favorites is the British forces Martindale No.2 which was delivered without an edge and with a very "unfinished" handle (both of which I soon fixed resulting in a very nice tool). The weight of the Martindale is about right for a machete in my opinion.

It is interesting that HIRO are now offering a smaller version of the same thing (although it sounds to me like that one is too short).

One concern I still have is that the sharp point of the blade is really quite thin steel and I could see it getting broken off if it ever accidentally connects with a rock - we'll just have to see on that one.

Is this what the machete looked like? Most of the links in this thread seem to be broken. There are machetes similar to this one all over the place. It also happens to be the machete used in the movie "The Book of Eli", so I've noticed more and more of them popping up.

Here is the Fury version:
