Ho hum...Mo' paddlin' pics. LBL today.

Ok... I'm officially jealous, I spent the day in an office, with no windows (Had there been windows I would have been looking out at rain/sleet anyway!)
I love to kayak & it looks like you guys had a great time! I really need to get out and paddle some this summer!

T.

You guys ever fish from the kayak? I fish a lot from a float tube and the kayak mafia has me thinking about one now too.

I like kayaking, first tried it this past fall, loved it, even though it was someone else's custom kayak for back problems, so I couldn't sit right, I still loved it, I wanna get one, but that's on my list below a new backpack, which is below more becker's, so I've got a little bit of time, aside from Tarpon, any recommendations?

You're gonna just have to try. Ocean, Perception, Old Town, Field and Stream, there are tons of them out there, at many different price points, and features. The first thing I would suggest it to figure out what you are going to want to do with it. If its a fishing kayak, then stick to the angler models, every company out there has one. Speed for open water, capacity for camping, stuff like that.

But what every you do, if you don't want to buy a Tarpon, don't sit it in. Steer clear of that, unless you are ready to buy. Sounds like BS, but its true.

If you say you are going for "all around use", look towards the angler models, the tend to be more stable, but slower, with good capacity. I searched and searched, but couldn't find a boat that had all the features I wanted, but I screwed up, and rode a Tarpon for my first boat, so, all others had to meet those expectations.

None did.

Here's an overhead pic of my boat, Camo Tarpon 120, its a commercial pic, but it works.

Size matters in application, 10' is gonna be a better river boat, with 16' being a better open water/ocean/lake boat. Hull shape plays a big part as well.

The Tarpon 120 won best boat award from 2008-2011, so...........

Just a thought on the matter, and believe me, I am no expert, but I have paddled with a few, and I listen and learn. You want to talk to the real paddle masters, Biscuit and Trade are the ones......

Old man, that is great! Haven't even had mine off the trailer yet. Course, if I get a new one then the old one can stay on there. "Bk7 makes the hotdogs happen", are you a Mason?

They open up the swamp for paddling today. No point in cleaning the boats now. Going to scout out some more campsites this weekend and maybe string up the hammocks.

Soccer season came on faster than I thought, we have our first game this weekend, and every weekend for the next 10 weeks. I'm still planning on bringing the girls up, but it will probably be a couple of weeks away yet. Lady loved the idea of a swamp paddle, so, convincing her is a piece of cake, but convincing my girls to skip a soccer game, might require me buying them guns, or makeup. Its a coin toss at this moment.

But, we are coming.......

Sit-on-top kayaks are way more stable than the more traditional sit-in style. They're perfect for fishing. If it's calm, and I'm careful, I can stand up in my Tarpon 140. I've surfed it, carried an entire full sized cooler of (ahem) tasty beverages in the tankwell, fished saltwater with it, crabbed with it, blasted choice tunes out of $15 iPod speakers on it. Me and my buddy are contemplating rigging up a hibachi with a heat shield for on-water grill sessions. My wife's Necky Vector 13 is a faster, but tippier machine.

I'm REALLY curious about that Emmrod. I wonder if it can be used in saltwater...and the heaviest line it can hold.

They landed a 300lb grouper on an emmrod, and put a youtube vid up about it, so........

The rod is stainless, and you buy the coil system that fits your needs. The best part, you can buy a rod/handle package, and then just buy replacement rods of varying tensile strength, to suit your needs, and they make a rod to suit all your fishing needs.

You put your own reel on, or at least thats what I did. Like Trade said, I called them, and the walked me through getting me my perfect setup, they did it for him and they'll do it for you.

What I like, is how small it packs down. Mine stays in my pack, along with a small box of my "lucky" lures. Then I have a small flip over box that I keep ready to rig a bait run up for.

I had my doubts as far as how sensitive it would be, I got the 6 coil, and the last time I took it catfishing (in Jeff Randall's catfish pond), I could feel every blade of grass, rock, and sand deposit under the water. A nibble comes through like a loud speaker and a solid strike about makes you fill your pants, front and back. :D

I love mine, and my Rhino rod still sits in the back of my Pathfinder, unused for the last year and a half.

It does look funny though, and most rod and reel snobs (willis!?!:D) bag on you, but it brings fish to the boat.

aside from Tarpon, any recommendations?

Moose pretty much laid it out there. A nice skinny 17 footer makes the long trips easier, and wide comfy SOT is great for fishing, camping and general use. If you get bit hard you'll have several boats. As far as a manufacturer, it's Ford/Chevy. I'm partial to Wilderness Systems but there are a bunch of great ones out there. Try em all.

Didn't want to start a new thread with a bunch of paddling pictures (and if you're tired of them just say so), but this is what we did for the 4th.

Two things always go with me when we hit the swamp. My BK14 and a compass. With thousands of acres of swamp it helps to keep your bearings. I use a GPS as well, but the Commenga doesn't fail.

Move out....:D

It was 104 and humid, but so beautiful we didn't notice the heat. Some scenery and some interesting cypress trees.

These two trees are enormous. No telling how old they are.

We have really enjoyed exploring back here. Not a bad way to spend a few hours.

Damn Damn Damn. That just looks so cool, I really will have to look more into this kayak business.

Most of my ''paddle'' boat experiance was in a very small jonboat, 32''x10' to be exact. I tried canoes a couple times but spent more time swimming then I did paddling, tippy bastids! I bought that small jonboat and used it for many many miles on the rivers, keeps up with canoes just fine and dont tip, plus I could haul more cargo.

I have been wanting to buy another jonboat like that, since I was stupid and sold mine. My question is, will the kayak be way better for this? I never felt handicapped with the jonboat and I trust it, Im not the most graceful fellow and Im very heavy, plus a very high center of gravity when seated....I'm just concerned I will roll/tip the kayaks as badly and as often as I did canoes.

I have also looked at the bass assasin thingys, like a mini pontoon-boat, with a geared oar system they SCOOT along the rivers, have seen people using them.

Keep sharing by all means Trade, I always enjoy the pics. My brother lived in paducah for awhile back in the late 90s but I never explored the region much.

Man that looks awesome. Ever go fishing back there?

We fish quite a bit there Dubz but asian carp got in during the flood and it's really messing up the fishing. As a matter of fact, I had one jump and actually hit me right in the middle of the back today. I thought Kay was going to have to be resuscitated from laughing so hard. Then she had one jump completely over the bow of her boat. Payback.....oh yeah...:D

Hey Thrill, check around (craigslist etc) for a used Wilderness Systems Pungo. Big stable boat and you'd love it.

Got damnit!!!!! I wanna; no needa get me a kayak!! That looks like a pimpin good time bro. I'm really diggin that 7 to!
