Hog bagged with BM-E (hunting pics, graphic)

BattleMistress004.jpg

Nice pics, nice knife.
I have never considered buying a knife like this. I admire them greatly, but I could see no personal need for having one. I now realize if I were ever called upon to dispatch a wild pig held at bay by a pack of dogs, I would be totally unprepared.
This thread is practically a Public Service Announcement.
I might have to rethink my position. :D

Very, very interesting pics. Hog hunting with dogs and knives definitely seems like a real rush. An open question to anyone who has ever hunted this way: Do you have to have a big knife like a BM for this type of hunt? What, in your opinion, would be the smallest/shortest knife to be effective for dispatching a wild hog?

Bro, of course it depends on the size of hog... The BM is overkill for anything except the record book hogs. In fact, you have to be careful with a 9" blade -- on a small hog (100 lbs), it's likely to exit the opposite side of the hog by at least 2 inches. That's 2 inches of dangerous blade for your dogs to hit.

7 inches, like a Hell Razor, would be perfect probably. 6 inches would be fine. 5 inches would be a bit risky in my opinion -- it's not unlikely around here to get on a 300 or even 400 pound monster. In that situation, you want to kill the hog quickly for the sake of your dog. I'm just of the "bigger is better" school.

But I also shoot them with a 444 marlin . Many argue that a .22 will drop them if placed well, and they are correct. But when things heat up, perfect shot and/or knife placement is not always possible.

nice score and great pics!

i used to hunt hogs by campbellton at the 74 ranch, there's some big hogs around those parts. again, nice score!

That video is pretty cool. Weight-wise, how big do those things get???

Perhaps it's time to mention this again.

Try googling "hogzilla."

"a 12-foot-long wild hog recently killed on a plantation and now quickly becoming a part of local legend. The plantation's owner claims the hog weighed 1,000 pounds and had 9-inch tusks."

Man... If that's anywhere close to being true... That's when you better have a 44mag strapped to your side, and someone close by with a BIG rifle or Slug gun and plenty of rounds...

that's just scary to think about

HOGZILLA WAS NOT A 1000lbs HOG--NOR WAS IT 12 FEET LONG-NOR DID IT HAVE 9" TUSKS

IT WAS A BIG A$$ HOG/BOAR--BUT NOT 12 FEET/1000lbs WORTH

Cool Video Bill.

We weren't fortunate enough to get any of ours out in the open like that --- we were fighting some really thick briars.

It's a blast for sure, hope to get to do it again...

WE ARE DOING THIS AT NIGHT--NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO THOSE BRIARS

WILL POST PHOTOS-AND VERY GLAD YOU DID OF YOUR HUNT AS WELL

:)

Eric, you could come up under the chest if it were feasible (straight up between the front legs.) Most often, you'll come from the side as the dogs will have the head area. This one I stabbed back a bit because the dog was real close, but was able to angle it forward (toward the hog's head) enough to hit the vitals -- had a 9" blade ;) The heart is very low, basically hidden by his front leg. Best case scenario is to stab under his armpit.

Gravel, yes Bill did that one -- it helped a lot to have that point.

Wicked, yes you kill it w/the knife only... (and the help of some VERY capable dogs ;) )

Good luck Bill!

Thanks for the info, I gotta find a way to get away to do this sometime soon. It sounds like a real rush.

:D:D

That BM-E is sweet! I need to try hog hunting one of these days. Looks like some good fun. Thanks for sharing!
