Looks like I got a bit of research to do. Appreciate all the advice. I've even thought about trying that "Dinosaur Training"

Yeah, you ought to go to AZ for a few months and let Dave and Hog Butcher show you how they do it...er...put the pounds on that is. :D

Quality muscle and size take time . progression not perfection.you have to ease into any of this. Going too hard too soon will get you injured...Eat ,train, rest. here are some names that are highly admired in the arena of strength.Dan John,Alwyn Cosgrove,Louie Simmons,Steve Cotter, many of those that contribute to the Tnation site. lots of info to digest but it goes back to basics...compound movements, proper diet, and rest and you can start seeing some real results in 6 months...

have md check thyroid function and glucose tolerance before trying extreme diet to rule out med. problem.

I quit smoking 3 years ago and put on 20 pounds in what felt like a week. No increase in calories or eating habits....just "poof"....20 lbs and off to the store to buy new pants.

quitting smoking will help you gain weight. . .

KAAK,

I have some experience with this. I'm taller and lighter than you. My whole life I've had to make serious efforts to keep from losing weight. Most of my life, I was around 103 pounds; I've managed to get up to the 140 pound range, and keep it around there for a few years.

Serious weightlifting definitely helps. Unfortunately, I had to give that up. In lieu of that, the best exercise I've found for weight gain is babysitting and playing with a 3 year old a few times a week. If you take an active role in playing with a little kid, you'll be lifting 35 or so pounds of wiggling little kid, in all sorts of awkward positions, a hundred or more times in an afternoon. Take a tyke to a playground, or swimming pool, or junior gym. It's good weightlifting exercise which is also fun, free, and helps you grow as a person.

Diet: Start by eating lots of nourishing foods... a rainbow of fruits and vegetables every day, etc... but don't stop there. Switch from drinking milk to drinking half and half. Make shakes with ice cream and peanut butter and eggs and fruits and protein powder and everything in your fridge. Add butter, mayo, olive oil, grated cheese, etc., to just about everything. Lots of peanut butter sandwiches. Lots of triple cream cheeses. Lots of steak, eggs, and fish. Carbs, too... lots of potatoes, ravioli, tamales, etc. Eat many meals: Breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, supper, dinner, evening snack, bedtime snack, etc. Gorge yourself every time you eat. Eat slowly, and chew thoroughly, to digest your food as efficiently as possible. Keep a little bottle of oil with you to sip on, and a pocket full of protein bars to munch, when you are out and about. Keep fatty snacks by your bed for those late night snacks.

Best wishes on getting stout, Bry.

I was trying to gain weight of "any kind" 3 years ago, I was at 135 at 5'10, so I started eating a full cup (dried, it made about 3 when fully cooked) of steel cut oates in the morning with a full cup of maple syrup and about 3 tablespoons of cinnamon and sugar in it. easy way to get about 1500 calories into your diet, albiet that its not as easy as it seems to wolf down 3 cups of sugary steel cut oats each morning.

3 years later at around 165, I'm trying to lose about 10 pounds of torso fat and gain it back in lean muscle mass, mostly in my forearms and hands :D. nothing like pinch gripping 15 pound weights for 30 minutes to make you realize how weak your hands are.

the caffeine is probably increasing how much your body is burning at a time when you have the most testosterone present for building muscle (early morning upon waking) , and not having any calories to help your body uptake mass - its just recycling muscle tissue.

Some people have a naturally thin frame and difficulty gaining weight - but from what you described your taking in 1,000 calories or less per day, wich is at or below sustainance living.

excersize is a very good idea, but definitely for the time being, eat something in the morning, start taking a multi vitamin, and consider either trying to find something you can eat every day that has protein in it (eggs and bacon, sausage, fish (very good)) - or make a double shot protein shake in the morning and drink it throughout the day. You have to have the materials to build a body first in order to be able to do it at all.
