Hog Hunt with a Tomahawk

You guys probably haven't ever heard of hog dogging( hunting hogs with dogs) we have a lot of that here, use your knife right and it's way faster and more humane than rifle hunting....and for the PETA types I love my dogs more than anything enough to buy them all Kevlar vests. Very very strange though to be able to sneak up on one asleep the ones around here seem to have Jedi senses.

Don't think he's sneaky, just lucky. You can hear his loud footsteps in the video. Would have been more humane and much smarter to take it with the bow from five feet instead of that stupid nervous lunge strike. Either way, sleeping prey? Wouldn't personally consider it ethical unless I was starving.

How quick and humane is it to kill something with an arrow? From my personal experience unless your shot is flawless an animal can run a real long way and take quite some time to die.....or much worse you pull your shot and hit it somewhere non fatal and it dies from an Infection weeks later.

I don't have any moral issue with him sneaking up on it while it's sleeping. I'm not trying to advocate "fairness" but rather minimizing pain and suffering.

I agree with this. Even a well placed shot from a .308 doesn't always mean a quick and painless death, you can track a whitetail with a busted shoulder for hours.

I've seen animals treated much worse. Nice stalking skills. I personally don't hunt, just because none of my friends are into it ...but I'd like to have a go at it someday. I think every man should kill, process, and eat something wild in his life.

Absolutely, while I will always advocate minimizing an animals suffering while hunting, sometimes the most humane and painless way isn't always the obvious way.

From five feet, pretty quick and humane IMO. How much time did it take this pig to die? Who knows? He's the one who said he had to finish it with an arrow. I say he should have finished it with an arrow the first time.

Is this the best way to kill a hog? No
Is it a smart way to kill a hog? No
Is it cruel and disgusting? NO!
I am sure the 2 million or so feral hogs in Texas that roam the country side trashing land, eating fields of crops, eating babies and eggs of wild and domesticated animals, attacking dogs, horses, livestock, and people... I am sure they are concerned with the most humane way of doing things. There is a reason it is legal to hunt hogs from helicopters here. They are out of control and a complete and total nuisance. We have had 4 ranch dogs put down because of feral pigs over the years, when I was a kid one of our horses was gored and had to have stitches. There are patches of land on our ranch that are the size of 6 football fields that look like they were plowed under all from pigs grubbing for anything to eat. They carry disease, they decimate the native wild life. They are giant cockroaches for the most part.

They are indeed amazing little organic bulldozers. I've seen them de-sod an acre of park land in no time. Where feral pigs are a nuisance I hope they're hunted to extinction. But I'd like to see them hunted in a more humane way. This kind of crap is senseless and gives too much ammo to the anti-hunting crowd. This guy should have walked up and popped it in the skull with a .41 mag and been done with it.

I am still not sure if he actually killed it or not, at first I thought it ran away wounded, then it looked like a black one was laying dead on the ground dead, then someone says he tracked the wounded one down and finished it off, so not sure what happened here.
The reason for believing it was inhumane is how easily he could have just wounded the beast, causing needless suffering, just for the sake of trying something "cool."
I am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but it keeps coming up as just a step or two above pulling wings and legs off of flies.

I won’t assume to know the intentions of the hunters in the video but I will put my two cents in on the subject.
I actually thought the fact that he could stalk close enough to the pig to hit it with a hawk pretty cool. What a great skill to be able to have at your disposal. I’m sure you don’t get good at something like that on the first try. I’m pretty sure that the shot to kill ratio is not 1 to 1 with every single weapon used for hunting so I can’t really fault him for not getting a one hit kill. Practice makes perfect. I would love to be able to hunt like that. I’ve never been hunting myself as I live right next to a grocery store and don’t “need” to hunt for food. I do plan on going very soon though. (As someone mentioned earlier; I do agree it should be done at least once in a lifetime.) How is the practice in the video any different than using a bow drill to start a fire when you have a lighter in your pocket? (Again; I am not assuming to know the intentions of the hunters, just generalizing)
It seems a moot point to argue this without knowing the intentions of the hunters. If this was legitimate practice for a skill that he was intent on developing then good for him. I think he’s working on a skill that could prove to be invaluable in certain situations. On the other hand if he was just doing something that he thought would be “cool” to show all his little hunting buddies on youtube then I suggest he try to kill the next one with his teeth. That would look super cool to all his buddies. Especially if it’s a full grown adult.

I would have been impressed if he was counting coup and filmed it to show his stalking ability or if he had a steel spear point mounted on a stout pole and gave it a deep rib sticking just behind the shoulder. He would have mortally wounded it instead of a grazing wound half way attempt, which is dishonorable for a hunter and one he should have been ashamed to ever tell anyone let alone to have passed it along as a video. Such moments are ones to only share as a confession to a close friend to purge the shame, each word should burn and leave a taste of brimstone in his mouth. An honorable hunter is not afraid to kill with the best tools on hand but should only take pride in a kill that was a best effort all the way around. That is why hitting a deer intentionally with a truck is nothing to be proud of. If someone is truly starving and needs meat the use what fits the need as can be defended in court but don't brag it up or video it to boost your cahone' factor.

As far as feral hogs go kill them all at a good roasting size and fire up the hickory wood or kill them big stinky ones and leave them be. Not many big ones worth eating unless you pen raised them on corn. Put a bullet or arrow in as many as can be killed and eaten or just left to the crows...they are nasty forest and field wreckers and of no use to me without woodsmoke, slow heat and sauce on the side.

Just wanted to clarify that I don't agree with stalking/sneaking up on this animal just to whack it in the head with a t-hawk. I just wanted to point out that arrows, bullets and the like are not always quick and painless either.
