Hog Muzak

My borrowed from the MIL 94 Caravan has a tape deck and I am too lazy to look for my tapes, so it is usually the local catholic radio or NPR.

What's a tape? :D

Oh wait, I found it thanks to Al Gore and the Internet. How big is your Caravan?

Normally I am listening to either Comedy 150 on XM Comedy or the local country station. CDs I keep in the car Charlie Daniels Band,Trace Adkins, Jimmy Buffet, Canned Heat, Steve Miller Band, Eagles, ZZ Top and 3 or 4 Stevie Ray Vaughn cds. May have to rotate out soon.

When the wife is around: Opeth, Danzig, Black Sabbath w/Dio, Pink Floyd, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, CoC, Pantera, NIN, Ministry, Static-X, Iron Maiden (not her fav), Type O Negative, Mudvayne, old Marilyn Manson, Meshuggah, Hendrix, Rush, Suicidal Tendencies, Sublime; to name a few.

Can't forget Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Vivaldi.

When the wife is not around: Behemoth, old Cradle of Filth (last 2 albums suck!), Decapitated, Entombed, Nile, Graveworm, Carcass, Six Feet Under, The Project Hate MCMXCIX (Can't stop the Hate!), Nasum, Malevolent Creation, Belphegor, God Dethroned, Dark Funeral, Mayhem, Hate Eternal, Gorgoroth, Obituary, Deicide, Morbid Angel, and Metallica - who my wife despises (lucky for her I love her! <-Actually, considering my some of my extreme tastes in music, some might consider this to be an ironic statement ;)).

While to most people this list sounds pretty disgusting/disturbing; there are plenty of black/death metal bands that I think SUCK as well. I try to mix it up and listen to a lot of everything.

Some of you may recall that I just went through a phase of upgrading my music system. Two VAC 160’s and a pair of Epiphany 6-pluses. Here is the right side and my mess from emptying my pack from the weekend.

I listen to music a lot! My interests are very broad. But when it comes down to listening for the sake of hearing beautiful things it has to be nonamplified instruments. It makes no sense (to me) to spend good money on a music system to hear things like Pearl Jam (although I very much like their music and others like them).

So on my list are things like:

Greg Brown – “Poet Game” (unless you only listen to RAP and Metal just go buy this CD – ask Guyon and Rat)
Patricia Barber - “Café Blue”
Freddy Hubbard
Stanley Turrentine
Miles Davis
John Coltrane

I listen to a lot of classical music but I lean towards compositions for fewer instruments rather than full symphony.

And then there is “World Music”. I got a “Rough Guide to World Music” and I just read through it and order CDs that look interesting. Right now I’m kind of into music from Japan.

I do the same with Classical music I have a guide -by composer- and just buy CDs that look interesting; right now two interest me; Isaac Albeniz and the American Samuel Barber. In two weeks it will be different….there is so much out there in the Classical World that I have never heard that it is hard for me to just sit and just listen to my favorites.:grumpy:

God I just do not have enough TIME!!!!

I just zap around on my iPod a lot, got the whole collection on there.

Lately I've been listening to Goldfinger, Bosstones, and the Beethoven symphonies when I'm on my own; in the car with my wife we end up listening to more radio-friendly stuff like the Beatles and various Japanese artists. Not 'J-pop'. Stuff like Gontiti etc.

And I thought you were just another Greatful Dead fan!!!

Tony, I'd love to hear Café Blue on your new system. Must be very close to the real thing!

Yeah, screen name gives some misconceptions. Actually, I picked my screen name after a broad head made by Golden Key Futura, which came in a 6 blade configuration (as well as the standard 3 or 4 blades). My BFC screen name was one I used for gaming for many years back; mostly because the unique 6 blade configuration is really overkill. Not enough hours in a day to game now.

My music tastes really do vary quite a bit. My mom is a piano teacher, and I grew up with her teaching out of the house. I played violin from the age of 3 until I was 15 or so. Then I got interested in girls. ;)

I dig blues, psychedelia, classic hard rock, and metal (heavy, death, some black). I certainly appreciate and listen to the Dead, but trust me I am a bit young to be a real Deadhead and only started to appreciate them during my college (and, um, "experimental") years.

Believe me, I certainly don't fit into the stereotype of a death metal fan. I don't shop at Hot Topic (if you can find a pic of me on the Pics thread here, you'll see what I mean) and don't otherwise act like a freak. In fact, probably the only noticeable characteristic about me is that I usually have a Busse or Swamp Rat strapped to my side... ;)

I used to listen to alot of country in my earlier years,

but now i mostly listen to 80's Rock,,,Lover Boy, Supertramp, Foreigner, STYX, ect,,

Well since I'm listening to March 12, 1981 at the Boston Garden I guess you could say that I'm a bit into the Grateful Dead. That said, I'm into all types of stuff, from old school SoCal punk like Social Distortion to rather obscure progressive jazz-rock fusion such as that played by Mahavishnu Orchestra. When I'm in the country mood I throw in Cash, Waylon, David Allan Coe and all the Hanks (Sr, Jr, III). Oh yeah, and when I'm feel like feeling depressed and low down I reach for my Alice in Chains and TOOL cds.

God bless the Grateful Dead

Just a minute...

Looks like Eagles' Hotel California and various Tom Pettys.

[There's goes my high-brow reputation!]

Lately,

Joe Bonamassa - his latest "You and Me" or the older "Blues Deluxe" is well worth a listen. 5 stars

The Black Keys - If Led Zeppelin was still in business, they would be covering songs by these guys.

It's amazing how important music was to me and how little time I now spend with it.

But every now and then, I get the vinyl out and drop the needle on some Sonny Fortune from back in the day.

The kids just roll their eyes.

Mahavishnu Orchestra.

Ever seen John McLaughlin?? Holy crap, a master....

They included/spun off some greats I've been lucky enough to see, Ponty, Hammer, Cobham, Di Meola, De Lucia.

Have some vinyl of all of theirs, and some cassettes, but still need to CD them.

Thanks for the jump start....

Add a set of brothers to the list of "in the CD holder now" too, Edgar and Johnny Winter...
