Hogue Deka Magnacut - but those scales …

I bought a bugout from bass pro, checked out the scales, pinched them, saw them bend and returned the knife before heading back
Thank you for this thread, I'm no longer interested in this model

as if 'light duty' wasn't enough of a turn off
Light duty?

I have both the 20cv and magnacut. I dont know if I recieved a 20cv dud but the heat treat on it is horrible.
If it is anything like my 20cv Hogue Ritter, they burned the edge when they ground it. After a bunch of sharpening it will be as ok as 20cv from anyone.

Has anyone RIT dyed the FRN scales? If so, can you just dip the whole knife into the solution or would it be best to disassemble it and immerse only the scales? I wonder if immersing the entire knife in the scalding solution would have a negative effect on the lock.

I have RIT dyed a couple of FRN Spydercos without issue to the simple lockbacks but would rather not damage my DEKA.

I don't think it's FRN. (Fiber Reinforced Nylon). Read that Hogue uses PPS (Polyphenylene sulfide) on at least some of their handles. I suspect they did on this one, also. PPS is stronger and more dimensionally stable than FRN. Nylon shrinks and expands with changes in the humidity and temperature. PPS does not. PPS is used in aerospace for rigid parts which must be dimensionally stable. I think they would have done OK with it if they had not hollowed it our and if they had roughened the texture with a dust blast treatment or other such method.

To add heft to the scales you could fill in the hollows with jb weld mixed with metal filings or powder or some such

Not that I've found "mere" 20CV lacking in any way... but are the blades between the 20CV/G-Masccus and the Magnacut models interchangeable, in case I do decide to get a Magnacut one and do a blade swap?

Hey everyone, I’m new here and glad to meet you all! I was just wanting to post and let everyone know that Hogue has released the Deka in Magnacut with the Red Lava G-Mascus grips. It’s a limited run at KnifeCenter and they have the clip point and modified wharncliffe available as I am typing this. I grabbed a wharncliffe since I have a couple of the clip points already. Just wanted to give a heads up!

They are interchangeable and you can check my post out, it’s the one right after yours.

Thanks for letting everyone know I also have a magnacut with the red lava g10. And absolutely love it. And mine is not sharp inside the scales. Not sure if they fixed that issue or if I got lucky. I have over 100 knives ranging from 30usd to450usd. And this knife is atm my fav. And I have atleast 10-15 knives with this style lock. Including the mini adamas the bm fact. The Bugout. The tagged out. And other companies like Kunwus x tao which is real nice. But I still like this Deka the best. Mine dropped shut out of the box. And is perfectly centered. Also sharpest knife out of the box I ever had. But still sharpened it lmao. Cause I can always get it sharper. Phenomenal blade here

I like FRN. It's inexpensive, light, extremely strong (if car bodies were made from FRN, body shops wouldn't be needed very much), has an inherent lubricity and is resistant to any chemicals you're likely to come into contact with. In short, it's just about ideal for folding knives IMHO. As for flex, G10 and micarta may be marginally stiffer (but heavier), but I can't detect much difference in ordinary use.
